2025 East to West Travel Trailer
My family and I just returned from an unforgettable RV trip. We rented Randy & Kim's travel trailer and had it delivered to the Fort Custer Recreation Area near Kalamazoo, MI. The RV was literally brand new, very clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed. We really appreciated the spacious living area, kitchen, comfortable beds, outdoor awning and most of all - Kim's and Randy's hospitality. They made sure that we were always taken care of,- starting with proper & prompt communication, having the travel trailer set up & ready to walk into to a detailed walkthrough and ensuring that everything worked as it should. I highly recommend Randy & Kim! You can't find better hosts!!

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Kalamazoo?

A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kalamazoo for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for motorhomes and trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform. You need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies approved drivers during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly into Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), and you are ready to roll.

What protection comes with my Kalamazoo RV rental?

You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Kalamazoo booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-131 or a dead battery at Fort Custer Recreation Area is just a phone call away. During checkout you choose your protection tier, and each plan covers physical damage to the RV up to set limits, giving you real financial peace of mind. Pro tip: if you are a first-time renter, choose a higher-tier plan so you can focus on s'mores at Gun Lake instead of worrying about minor scratches.

What if I need to cancel my Kalamazoo RV trip?

Booking your Kalamazoo RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is. If your plans shift, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early for Kalamazoo summer weekends and Western Michigan University home games, when the best rigs go fast, but know that flexibility is built into every booking.

Can I bring my dog on a Kalamazoo RV rental?

Absolutely, Kalamazoo is a fantastic dog-friendly destination. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Kalamazoo, and finding one is easy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you are rolling, your pup will love Markin Glen County Park's wooded loop and the leash-friendly trails at Al Sabo Land Preserve. Michigan state parks like Yankee Springs and Fort Custer welcome leashed dogs on most trails and at campsites, though not on designated swim beaches. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee (typically $25-$75) and bring a tie-out cable so your dog can lounge comfortably outside the rig.

Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Kalamazoo?

Yes, and this is the easy-button for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Kalamazoo, dropping the rig right at Markin Glen, Fort Custer Recreation Area, Yankee Springs, or even your driveway in Portage or Oshtemo. They'll back it into your site, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through the propane, slide-outs, and AC controls before they leave. Delivery fees are set by each host based on distance, typically $2-$4 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery with setup means you skip the stress of driving a 30-foot motorhome through downtown Kalamazoo, and you can fly straight into AZO airport and start vacationing the moment you arrive.

How far can I travel on a Kalamazoo RV road trip?

You're perfectly positioned for an epic RV road trip from Kalamazoo. South Haven and the Lake Michigan beaches are just 40 miles west (about an hour); Saugatuck and Holland sit 50-60 miles northwest; Grand Rapids is 50 miles north; Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is roughly 200 miles up the coast; and Mackinaw City is about 270 miles north for a true Pure Michigan adventure. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include 100-150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee after that. Pro tip: map your route before you message a host so they can quote you an all-in package that fits your itinerary.

Where are the best campgrounds near Kalamazoo for RV camping?

You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Kalamazoo include Fort Custer Recreation Area (just 15 miles west in Augusta, with 219 modern sites on Eagle Lake), Yankee Springs Recreation Area (35 miles north with 200 modern sites and Gun Lake access), Kalamazoo KOA Holiday in Schoolcraft (full hookups and a pool, 15 minutes south), Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort on W C Avenue (three lakes and a fishing pond), and Van Buren State Park in South Haven (right on Lake Michigan). RV camping in Kalamazoo is best booked through Michigan DNR's reservation system at midnrreservations.com, which opens bookings 6 months in advance. Pro tip: snag a lakefront site at Fort Custer's Eagle Lake loop, hands down the local favorite.

When is the best time to rent an RV in Kalamazoo?

Late May through mid-October is prime time for an RV trip in Kalamazoo, with July and August delivering the warmest weather (highs around 82-83°F) and lake water finally swimmable. June brings lush green forests and fewer crowds; September offers crisp mornings, harvest festivals, and gorgeous fall color along the Kal-Haven Trail; early October is peak foliage in the surrounding hardwoods. Winter is genuinely cold (January averages 18-28°F with serious lake-effect snow), so most hosts wind down RV rentals by late October. Pro tip: book a late-September trip to hit the Kalamazoo Beer Week shoulder and the Michigan apple harvest at Crane's Pie Pantry, a true insider move.

I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Kalamazoo?

You have got this, and Kalamazoo is one of the friendlier places in Michigan to learn. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane and water systems, slide-outs, awnings, and dump procedures, and they are a phone call away during your trip. First time renting an RV? Pick a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) and avoid the M-43 and US-131 interchange during weekday rush hour. The rest of Kalamazoo is flat, low-traffic, and easy to navigate. Pro tip: do a parking-lot lap at the Crossroads Mall before heading west on I-94 toward your campground so you can practice turns and braking.

What happens if something breaks down during my trip?

You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you blow a tire on I-94 between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, lock yourself out at Yankee Springs, or your fridge stops cooling at Fort Custer, one phone call gets help dispatched. Roadside support handles towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and lockouts. For anything mechanical with the RV itself, message your host directly since they know their rig best and can often troubleshoot in minutes. Pro tip: take a short video of all systems working during your walkthrough so you have a reference point if anything acts up later on the road.

Can I take my Kalamazoo RV rental into Indiana, Ohio, or Canada?

Yes, interstate travel is welcome and Kalamazoo is a great launchpad. Indiana Dunes National Park is just 100 miles southwest, the Ohio border is about 90 miles south, and a Lake Michigan loop through Chicago is very doable. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection coverage, so message the owner directly through the listing before you book to confirm and sort the paperwork. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Kalamazoo runs Kalamazoo to Sleeping Bear Dunes to Mackinac, roughly a 7-day loop with unforgettable Great Lakes scenery.

What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost in Kalamazoo?

Budgeting fuel is simple once you know what to expect. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, Class A motorhomes pull 6-10 MPG, and a half-ton truck towing a travel trailer lands around 10-13 MPG. Gas prices in Kalamazoo typically run a few cents below the Michigan average, with stations along Sprinkle Road, Stadium Drive, and the I-94 exits offering the most competitive prices. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $100-$130 in fuel. Pro tip: top up at the Costco on Westnedge before heading north, then again at the Meijer in Plainwell to keep costs down on longer trips.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Kalamazoo?

Earlier is always better, especially for the popular spots. Michigan DNR campgrounds like Fort Custer, Yankee Springs, and Van Buren State Park open reservations exactly six months ahead at midnrreservations.com, and waterfront sites for summer weekends often disappear within the first hour. For private parks like Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort or Kalamazoo KOA, two to three months out is usually plenty. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) book up by February. Pro tip: if your dream campground is full, sign up for cancellation alerts through services like Campnab, since Michigan camping has high turnover and sites open up daily.

What are local driving conditions like around Kalamazoo?

You'll find Kalamazoo refreshingly easy to drive an RV through. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, roads are wide, and traffic is mild outside of weekday rush hour on I-94 and US-131. Watch for low railroad bridges in the Vine and Stuart neighborhoods (some are under 12 feet, so know your RV's exact clearance), and slow down for the famously bumpy stretches of pavement on Westnedge Avenue. In winter, lake-effect snow can dump 6+ inches in hours, which is why most RV rentals run May through October. Pro tip: download MDOT's Mi Drive app for live traffic and construction updates before any longer trip up US-131 or out to South Haven.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/map

What amenities can I expect at Kalamazoo-area campgrounds?

Most campgrounds near Kalamazoo are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Michigan state parks like Fort Custer and Yankee Springs offer modern sites with 30/50-amp electric and potable water spigots, plus centralized dump stations and modern restrooms with hot showers. Private parks like Kalamazoo KOA and Outdoor Adventures Resort offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric) right at the site, often with WiFi, pools, and laundry. Need to dump or fill water mid-trip? Markin Glen County Park and most Meijer gas stations along US-131 have public dump stations for a small fee. Pro tip: state parks require a Michigan Recreation Passport ($14 for non-residents, $13 for residents) for vehicle entry, so add it at checkout.

What is inside a typical RV rental in Kalamazoo?

You will be impressed by how complete these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Kalamazoo comes with a queen or king bed, bunk options for the kids, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for travel. Most include a TV, and many offer a generator or solar setup for boondocking, plus an outdoor awning for Gun Lake sunsets. WiFi varies, so if remote work is on your itinerary, message the host or bring a hotspot since rural coverage west of Kalamazoo can be spotty. Pro tip: ask hosts which kitchen and linen kits are included, many bundle them at no extra cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kalamazoo,Michigan

What add-ons can I get with my Kalamazoo RV rental?

Hosts in Kalamazoo love making your trip easy with thoughtful add-ons. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25-$75), fully stocked kitchen kits, outdoor camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits (great during dry-season campfire restrictions), bikes, kayaks, generators, and pet packages. Pickup and drop-off usually happen at the host's location near Kalamazoo, Portage, or Oshtemo, with a 30-60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary: some listings offer unlimited miles, while others include 100-150 free miles per day. Pro tip: ask about a Lake Michigan beach bundle, several hosts have beach chairs, coolers, and umbrellas ready for your South Haven or Saugatuck day trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kalamazoo,Michigan

How does payment and the security deposit work?

Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Kalamazoo through RVezy, you pay the full rental amount upfront by credit card directly through the platform, never to the host. A separate refundable security deposit (typically $500-$1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage or policy violations. To protect yourself, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return it on time, refill the gas tank as agreed, and empty the holding tanks if your contract requires it. Pro tip: most hosts in Kalamazoo are reasonable and communicative, so a quick message about any small issue usually resolves things quickly.
