Calvin was absolutely fantastic to work with. He was responsive, resourceful, and knowledgeable on the area. His rig was set up perfectly for backcountry camping and camp grounds. The truck was smooth, easy on the back, and more than capable of dealing with the backcountry areas we spent time in. My (now fiancé as of during the trip) is pretty set on o other trip in this rig. This was by far the best roadtrip of my life, and a lot of that was due to Calvin’s hospitality and this awesome vehicle. 10/10 experience.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Hungry Horse, MT

What license do I need to rent an RV in Hungry Horse, Montana?

Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hungry Horse. Montana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers you'll find on RVezy. The only firm requirements are that you're 25 or older and have a valid driver's license, which you'll confirm directly through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? Pair your home-country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club (usually under $20). Once that's sorted, you're cleared to pick up your rental and head straight for Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Is my RV rental protected if something happens during the trip?

Yes, every RV rental in Hungry Horse booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Flathead National Forest with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, picking the tier that best matches your trip and comfort level. That is especially reassuring when you are driving gravel forest roads to Hungry Horse Reservoir or navigating tight turns near the dam. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it removes the biggest financial worry most first-time renters have. Select your plan at booking and you are set.

What is the cancellation policy if my Glacier trip plans change?

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel before your trip start. Because Glacier National Park vehicle reservations and prime summer dates around Hungry Horse sell out fast, the smart move is to book your RV early and then finalize campgrounds. Review the full cancellation details in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm payment.

Can I bring my dog on an RV rental in Hungry Horse?

Absolutely, many RVezy hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Hungry Horse has available, then message the host with your dog's size and breed to confirm. While pets are not allowed on most trails inside Glacier National Park, your dog will love the Flathead National Forest just south of town, plus the paved bike path along the Middle Fork Flathead River and the dog-friendly areas at Whitefish Lake State Park. Mountain Meadow RV Park in Hungry Horse and North American RV Park in nearby Coram both welcome pets. Pack a leash, waste bags, and bear spray for forest walks.

Where are the best campgrounds to stay near Hungry Horse, MT?

You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Hungry Horse include Mountain Meadow RV Park (wooded full-hookup sites just minutes from Glacier's west entrance), Glacier Campground in West Glacier (full hookups, cabins, walkable to the park gate), North American RV Park in Coram (full-hookup sites with a dog park), and Flathead National Forest options on Hungry Horse Reservoir like Lid Creek, Lost Johnny Point, and Emery Bay, all bookable on Recreation.gov. When is the best time of year to visit Hungry Horse in an RV?

The sweet spot for RV camping Hungry Horse is mid-June through late September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open and daytime highs sit in a comfortable 70 to 85°F range, dropping to the 40s at night. July and August are peak (and busiest), early June still has snow on Logan Pass, and mid-September brings cooler 60s, golden larches, and noticeably thinner crowds. May and October are beautiful but expect overnight freezes and partial road closures inside Glacier. Winters here are snowy with lows often well below 20°F, so most rentals operate May through October. Local insider tip: aim for the second or third week of September for the best combo of weather, wildlife, and elbow room.

I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?

You will do great, first time renting an RV is more common than you would think, especially around Hungry Horse where the roads are wide, traffic is light, and the speed limit on US-2 drops as you approach town. Every RVezy host gives you a full pre-trip walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, propane, the awning, and the dump station, plus they are a text away during your trip. If you are still nervous, pick a Class B campervan or a 20 to 24 foot Class C, both easy to handle. Or book delivery so the RV is already set up at your campground. Pro tip: practice a few turns in a quiet local lot before heading toward Glacier.

What happens if I get a flat tire or breakdown near Glacier?

You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are stuck on US-2 near Essex, on the East Side Reservoir Road to Spotted Bear, or up the Camas Road inside the park. Roadside assistance handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app to walk you through small issues like a tripped breaker or a finicky water pump. Pro tip: cell coverage drops fast once you head south of the Hungry Horse Dam, so download offline maps and save the RVezy support number before you leave town.

How much should I budget for fuel on a Hungry Horse RV trip?

Easy to plan for. Most motorhomes you'll rent near Hungry Horse average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), campervans get 15 to 20 mpg, and your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 14 mpg. Montana gas prices in the Flathead Valley generally track slightly above the national average, with stations in Hungry Horse, Martin City, and Columbia Falls being your last reliable fill-ups before heading south on either Reservoir Road. For a typical 5-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $260 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Columbia Falls (cheaper than West Glacier) and never pass a gas station once you're on East Side Reservoir Road.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Hungry Horse?

Sooner is better, but you have options. Reservations for Glacier National Park campgrounds like Apgar, Fish Creek, St. Mary, and Many Glacier open 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov, and the most popular dates can sell out within minutes for July and August. Flathead National Forest sites on Hungry Horse Reservoir, like Lid Creek, Lost Johnny Point, and Emery Bay, are also bookable on Recreation.gov and are easier to grab. Private parks like Mountain Meadow RV Park and Glacier Campground typically open bookings well in advance and fill by spring. Local insider tip: if you are a last-minute planner, Forest Service sites on the east side of the reservoir often have midweek openings even in July.

What are driving conditions like around Hungry Horse and Glacier?

Manageable with a little awareness. US-2 between Kalispell and Hungry Horse is a wide, well-maintained two-lane highway, perfect for a motorhome rental Hungry Horse first-timers will feel comfortable on. Inside Glacier, Going-to-the-Sun Road is narrow and winding with strict size limits (max 21 feet long, 8 feet wide, 10 feet tall past Avalanche Creek), so larger RVs should stick to the lower park roads or use the park shuttle. The West Side and East Side Reservoir Roads are paved near town, then become well-graded gravel; drive 25 to 35 mph and watch for logging trucks. Wildlife such as deer, elk, and bears is most active at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: never drive Going-to-the-Sun Road for the first time after dark.
nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hungry Horse?

Plenty, depending on where you stay. Private parks like Mountain Meadow RV Park, Beargrass Lodging & RV Resort, and Glacier Campground offer full hookups (20/30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. Forest Service campgrounds on Hungry Horse Reservoir, including Lid Creek, Emery Bay, and Doris Creek, are more rustic with vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire rings but no hookups, perfect for boondocking-curious renters. Need to dump tanks or refill water? Most private parks offer dump stations for guests. Pro tip: bear-proof food storage is required at all reservoir campgrounds, so use the provided lockers.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/flathead/recarea/?recid=68641

What's typically included inside the RVs available in Hungry Horse?

More than you would expect. Most RVs on RVezy near Hungry Horse come fully equipped for a self-contained Glacier adventure: a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, heating and air conditioning, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelts for each listed passenger. Many include a generator (handy for boondocking on Hungry Horse Reservoir where there are no hookups), an outdoor awning, a TV, and add-ons like bikes or kayaks. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Flathead, so do not rely on it. A campervan rental Hungry Horse is great for couples, while Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 7 comfortably for a family RV trip Hungry Horse adventure.

What add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?

Lots of ways to customize. Popular RVezy add-ons in the Hungry Horse area include linens and towels, kitchen kits, camp chairs, generators, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards, portable propane fire pits (a smart pick during Montana fire bans), and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds for a flat fee based on distance from town. Pickup and drop-off are arranged directly with your host, usually at their location in Hungry Horse, Columbia Falls, or Kalispell, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the start and a quick check at return. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you are heading to the reservoir.

How does payment and the security deposit work?

Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Hungry Horse on RVezy, your payment is processed through the platform, never in cash to the host, so everything is tracked and protected. You will see the full price breakdown (nightly rate, taxes, service fee, any add-ons, and the security deposit) before you confirm. The security deposit is a temporary hold authorized on your card before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition and within the mileage cap. Deposit amounts vary by RV and host. Pro tip: do a quick photo walkthrough with your host at both pickup and drop-off to keep your deposit refund stress-free.

Can I take my RV rental across the border into Canada from Hungry Horse?

Often yes, and it is a stunning trip. Hungry Horse is within easy driving distance of the Piegan/Carway and Roosville border crossings into Alberta and British Columbia, putting Waterton Lakes National Park, Banff, and Jasper within reach of your Glacier basecamp. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but it depends on the specific host and protection plan, so message the host before booking and confirm in writing. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and a signed letter from the host authorizing the border crossing. Heads up: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: the combined Glacier and Waterton International Peace Park experience is one of the best RV itineraries in North America.
