What a fantastic experience for us first time RVers! Levi was so patient in explaining everything to us. He even made a special trip to help us out with something we didn't understand. The setup and pack up was easier than expected. The RV was just the right size for us. We look forward to doing this again!

2019 Other Class B
This was my first time renting a Class B, and Susan and Terry were welcoming of that fact and made it easy. It’s a very well done conversion with lots of room (and cost) saving ideas, and manageable (no frills) technology. The ride itself is comfortable. The benches fold into a big bed that runs length wise. I used a yoga mat and an opened sleeping bag (provided) to close the little gap in the center, worked perfectly. Great interior lighting, sound system, finishes, screens, blackout coverings, etc. A/C for the space is great. Great value, easy in and out, and free parking at pick-up. Definitely a positive first impression with Class B vans.

Renting from Magen and Corey was a wonderful experience! They are great with communication and answered every single question that I had in a very timely manner (and I had TONS of questions). The camper is absolutely massive, beautiful, and very clean. We had the absolute BEST time and will definitely be renting from Magen and Corey again!! ❤️❤️

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Independence, VA

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Independence, VA?

RV rental in Independence, VA is one of the better values in the Blue Ridge. Most travel trailers start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from about $250 to $400. Because Grayson County is a quieter mountain destination, you'll generally pay less than near Roanoke or the Shenandoah Valley. To find a cheap RV rental in Independence, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), travel in shoulder months like late April or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in rates before the Grayson Highlands Fall Festival in late September fills the area up.

What license do I need to rent an RV in Independence, VA?

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Independence, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes you'll see on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and ID verification is handled securely during booking, so there's nothing extra to bring to pickup beyond your physical license. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters in Grayson County are surprised how simple the process is, freeing you up to focus on planning hikes to Mount Rogers instead of paperwork.

What happens if I need to cancel my Independence, VA RV trip?

Booking your Independence RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, and the RVezy support team can help in situations like natural disasters, which matters in a mountain region that can occasionally see early snow or remnants of tropical storms blowing through the Blue Ridge. The exact cancellation terms that apply to your booking are shown clearly during checkout and in your RVezy account, so you'll know where you stand before you confirm. If life happens, RVezy support is available to walk you through your options before, during, and after your trip.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about their RV's flooring, then pack a towel for muddy paws after creek splashing. A weekend with your pup in the Blue Ridge couldn't be easier.

When is the best time to take an Independence, VA RV trip?

Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for an Independence, VA RV trip, with the absolute peak running mid-May through late October. Summer highs in Grayson County sit in a comfortable 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit range (much cooler than Richmond or DC thanks to the 2,500-plus foot elevation), while nights drop into the 50s for perfect sleeping. June brings rhododendron blooms across the highlands, October delivers some of Virginia's best leaf color, and late September lines up with the Grayson Highlands Fall Festival, complete with wild pony auctions. Winters are real here, with January lows in the 20s and occasional snow, so if you book December through March, look for an RV with a furnace and heated tanks.

I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in the Independence area?

You've got this, and first time renting an RV in Independence, VA is more common than you might think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering the propane, water systems, slide-outs, generator, and dump procedure, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. If the idea of navigating winding mountain roads like Route 16 or US 58 toward Grayson Highlands has you nervous, choose delivery and let the host place the rig at your campsite. Pro tip for confidence: start with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, and plan your first day's drive short, maybe just from pickup to Hickory Ridge Campground, so you settle in before tackling anything bigger.

What happens if something breaks down during my Independence RV trip?

You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US 58, a dead battery at Grayson Highlands, or a mechanical hiccup in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, one phone number gets help moving toward you. Your host is typically your first text for quick questions, like how to reset the GFCI or relight the water heater, and most respond within minutes. Heads up: cell service is spotty in the high country around Whitetop Mountain and the Appalachian Trail corridor, so screenshot key contacts before you head out. Between the host, RVezy support, and roadside, you've always got a team behind you.

What are the best road trips from Independence, VA?

An RV road trip from Independence, VA opens up some of the southeast's most scenic miles. The classic loop is the Blue Ridge Parkway south toward Asheville, NC (about 120 miles of slow scenic driving), with overnight stops at Doughton Park and Mount Pisgah. A shorter favorite is the Crooked Road heritage music trail through Galax, Hillsville, and Floyd, perfect for old-time music fans. For waterfalls, head to Stone Mountain State Park in NC (about 35 miles). Heading west, Damascus and the Virginia Creeper Trail are around 50 miles away, ideal for a bike-and-RV combo. Cross-border travel between US states is straightforward on RVezy, while travel into Mexico is not permitted due to insurance coverage limits.

What should I budget for fuel on my Independence, VA RV trip?

Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes you'll rent in Independence average 8 to 12 mpg, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg while towing). Gas prices in Grayson County tend to track slightly below the Virginia state average; fill up in Independence or Galax before heading into the mountains, since stations get sparse around Mouth of Wilson and Whitetop. For a typical 3-night trip staying local (Grayson Highlands, New River, Mount Rogers), budget $80 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: the GasBuddy app works great along US 58 and I-77 for finding the cheapest pumps en route.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Independence?

Book your campground as soon as your RV is locked in, especially for Grayson Highlands State Park, which opens reservations 11 months ahead and fills weekends fast from May through October. Use the Virginia State Parks reservation system online or by phone (800-933-7275) for Grayson Highlands and the New River Trail. For Grindstone Campground in Jefferson National Forest, use Recreation.gov six months out. Private parks like New River Canoe & Campground and the Fancy Gap KOA take direct bookings and tend to have more last-minute openings. Pro tip: if you're aiming for the Fall Festival weekend in late September or peak fall foliage in mid-October, lock everything in by June, then book your RV around the campground dates.

What are the local driving conditions like around Independence, VA?

Driving around Independence is genuinely pleasant if you know what to expect. Traffic is light (this is rural southwest Virginia, not Northern Virginia), but the roads are mountainous. US 58 east toward Galax and west toward Mouth of Wilson is curvy with steep grades, and Route 16 north over the mountain to Marion is one of the twistier paved roads in the state, sometimes called "The Back of the Dragon." Use lower gears on descents to save your brakes, keep an eye out for deer at dawn and dusk, and watch for occasional logging trucks. Winter brings the chance of ice above 3,000 feet near Whitetop. If you're unsure about driving any leg, just book delivery and skip the steepest sections entirely.

What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Independence?

Campgrounds near Independence offer better amenities than many travelers expect for a rural area. Grayson Highlands' Hickory Ridge Campground has 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, an amphitheater, and a camp store. New River Canoe & Campground offers 30-amp electric/water sites, bathhouses, a playground, and on-site tube and canoe rentals. Grindstone Campground in the national forest is more rustic (no hookups) but has potable water spigots and a dump station. To fill fresh water and dump tanks between stops, the Grayson Highlands dump station is the most convenient public option in the area. Pro tip: most sites here are gravel and reasonably level, but bring leveling blocks for the sloped highland sites.

What's inside a typical RV rental in Independence?

Your motorhome rental in Independence will feel more like a small apartment than a tent. Expect a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette and lounge seating, climate control with both AC and a propane furnace (key for cool Blue Ridge nights), and seatbelts for travel. Most rentals include a TV, and many hosts add WiFi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or onboard generators for boondocking. Campervans pack the essentials more compactly, while travel trailers and fifth wheels offer the most space for families. Each RVezy listing shows a full amenity list, and you can message the host to add a starter kit, bedding, or coffee maker.

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about in Independence?

Hosts in the Independence area offer useful add-ons that make trips smoother: linen and kitchen kits (commonly $35 to $75), generator usage (often $3 to $5 per hour), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks for the Virginia Creeper Trail, propane top-offs, and dump-station service at return. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Independence, Galax, or just over the line in Sparta, NC, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. For mileage, many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with an overage rate around $0.35 to $0.45, while some offer flat unlimited-mileage packages for longer road trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit on your first booking, and the whole experience becomes turnkey.

How does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?

Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash directly to the host. You'll typically pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip starts, with the schedule clearly shown at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV), and it's released back to your card after your trip ends and the host confirms there are no damage or mileage overages. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup, note pre-existing scratches with your host, respect the mileage cap, and return the RV with the same fuel, propane, and tank levels.

Can I do an Independence, VA RV trip in winter?

Yes, and a winter RV trip in Independence is a quiet, magical alternative to the busy summer scene. Grayson Highlands State Park stays open year-round, and the highlands often get a dusting of snow that turns the rhododendron tunnels into something out of a storybook. To do it right, filter RVezy listings for four-season or winterized rigs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace, and ask the host directly about cold-weather prep. Plan to stay on shore power since hookups prevent tank freeze-ups, top off propane before heading up, and pack tire chains just in case. Pro tip: Hickory Ridge Campground has a handful of sites kept open in winter, and you'll often have the views entirely to yourself.
