Late spring through early fall is the prime window for RV travel, with mild valley temperatures and full campground services. Every June, thousands flock to Roan Mountain to walk among the rhododendrons, with peak bloom typically around the third week of June. September and October bring crisp air, fall color, and lighter crowds, ideal shoulder-season conditions for RVers. Winter visits are possible at the valley campground, but high-elevation roads to Carvers Gap can close due to snow and ice.

Carvers Gap is the high pass at the south edge of the park where the Appalachian Trail crosses Roan Mountain. Step onto the Appalachian National Scenic Trail from this gap and explore the high mountain balds at Roan Mountain. Hikers can walk north toward Round Bald and Jane Bald for sweeping ridgeline views. fs.usda.gov/r08/cherokee/recreation/roan-highlands
The Rhododendron Gardens are in bloom around mid-June, but interesting year-round. An easy, paved trail starts at the information cabin and winds through rhododendrons to an overlook, with a short 0.3-mile loop or a longer figure-eight option. Reach them via TN 143 to Carvers Gap, then NC 261. fs.usda.gov/r08/cherokee/recreation/roan-highlands
The Cloudland Trail leads to one of the highest viewpoints on Roan Mountain, a moderate 1.2-mile hike from the Cloudland parking area to the Roan High Bluff Overlook. Trailhead parking is at the top of the mountain, accessed by a steep paved road not suitable for large RVs. fs.usda.gov/r08/cherokee/recreation/roan-highlands
The Doe River runs directly through Roan Mountain State Park and offers cold-water trout fishing in summer. Area creeks offer some of the best brook and rainbow trout fishing in the Forest. Campground loops sit close to the water for easy access.
TN 143 is a state scenic parkway that climbs from the valley to Carvers Gap. The drive offers long-distance mountain vistas, picnic spots, rhododendrons, and spruce-fir forests. Drive it in a tow vehicle or smaller RV; pullouts are short and the grade is steep. fs.usda.gov/r08/cherokee/recreation/roan-highlands
The park operates a seasonal swimming pool and a visitor center near the main campground area. Both are an easy walk or short drive from RV sites and offer a cool-down option on hot summer afternoons. Hours are seasonal, so confirm before arrival.
A hiking section of the Overmountain Victory NHT passes through the Roan Highlands near the park. A short hiking section of the long-distance Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail runs through Hampton Creek State Natural Area to national forest lands at Yellow Mountain Gap. It commemorates the 1780 Patriot militia march to Kings Mountain. nps.gov/places/roan-mountain-trail.htm
Was perfect for our family trip to Louder than Life 2025! Drove like a dream, great on fuel mileage, and was so nice to come back every night to A/C and soft beds. Any questions I had the owner responded almost immediately and was so easy to deal with. Hope i convinced him to join us at LTL 2026. Would definitely recommend, 10/10, and will be renting him again in the future

Roan Mountain State Park, TN, United States
The park lies along TN Highway 143 just south of the town of Roan Mountain, Tennessee. Elizabethton is roughly 20 miles north (about 30 minutes), and Johnson City is about 25 miles northwest (around 40 minutes); Asheville, NC is approximately 75 miles south by mountain roads. The area is accessed by US 19E, TN 143 and NC 261. RV drivers should expect steep grades, tight switchbacks, and limited turnaround space on the climb up TN 143 toward Carvers Gap, so larger rigs are best left at the valley campground. The nearest commercial airport is Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) near Blountville, about 45 miles away.
