A wet bath, commonly found in small trailers, campervans, and truck campers, is a compact restroom that combines a shower and toilet in one space. Designed with lightweight, water-friendly components, wet baths provide a convenient solution for those who prefer a compact bathroom over none at all. In addition, wet baths help maintain an ideal weight range for safe towing or driving by taking up less space and requiring smaller holding tanks, proving they're more about practicality than luxury.
Dry baths have a separate toilet, shower, and sink. Dry baths are similar to residential bathrooms since you don't have to wipe down wet surfaces before you can use the toilet. RV manufacturers include dry baths when the RV's frame and chassis can accommodate heavy components like larger holding tanks and residential-style materials.
Instead of using water to flush waste, a dry-flush toilet employs a unique cartridge-based system lined with special bags. When you flush, a twist mechanism seals and wraps the waste, locking it away until the cartridge is full. Then, you simply replace the cartridge with a new one and dispose of the waste properly.
Even though Happier Camper HC1-S CW SE has one of the shortest and lightest travel trailers on the market in 2023, it didn't make our list since it has a dry-flush toilet and doesn't use water from the RV to operate.
A cassette toilet is a portable toilet that collects waste in a small, removable tank. Cassette toilet tanks have an average maximum capacity of five gallons. The waste stays inside the holding tank until it's time to empty it at an RV dump station. Cassette toilets use water from the RV and are considered a lightweight alternative to the standard, gravity-flush RV toilet.
Find out more about how RV toilets work in the beginner's guide for using an RV toilet.
Dry weight is the weight of the RV shipped from the manufacturer and doesn't include propane, liquids, passengers, or other cargo.
Fully loaded weight, or GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating), is calculated by adding the weight of propane, liquids, and other cargo to the RV's dry weight. You should never exceed the manufacturer's GVWR).
