Quartzsite, Arizona: the town that becomes an RV city every January

For most of the year, Quartzsite is a few thousand people beside Interstate 10 in the western Arizona desert, twenty minutes from the California line. Then winter comes, and it becomes something with no real comparison in North America: a temporary city of RVs spread across the desert in every direction, with estimates of the seasonal influx running from hundreds of thousands of visitors to well over a million. Nobody has an exact count. Nobody could. The town simply disappears into its own parking lot.

If you own, rent, or are even mildly curious about RVs, Quartzsite in January is worth seeing once, the way a total eclipse is worth seeing once. Here's how it works.

What actually happens there

The season runs from roughly November through February, built around a rolling series of swap meets, rock and gem shows, and flea markets. The centrepiece is the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show, the "Big Tent," which runs January 15 to 23 in 2027. Admission is free, the tent is enormous, and inside is every product, gadget, upgrade, and service the RV world has ever invented, being demonstrated at full volume.

Around the Big Tent, the town itself turns into a bazaar. Quartzsite has been a rockhound destination for decades, and the gem and mineral shows draw their own crowd; the two audiences wander each other's aisles all winter. Vendors sell solar panels next to geodes next to funnel cakes. It's not curated. That's the charm.

Where everyone sleeps: the BLM desert

While there are many places to camp near Quartzite, the reason its became the RV capital of winter is federal land. The town is ringed by Bureau of Land Management desert where camping is measured in square miles rather than campsites, and the arithmetic is hard to beat:

The La Posa Long Term Visitor Area, just south of town, sells a season permit for $180 that covers September 15 through April 15, seven months of desert with access to water stations, dump facilities, and trash service. A shorter option runs $40 for 14 days. Outside the LTVAs, ordinary BLM land allows free camping for up to 14 days in one spot, with no services at all. Snowbirds do the math against seven months of any other housing cost in America and buy the permit, which is how the desert fills.

There's no reservation system for any of this. You drive out, pick a patch of desert, and settle in. In January, your neighbours might be a hundred feet away in every direction and still feel far.

What first-timers should know

Boondocking here means self-sufficiency: fresh water on board, tanks empty, power from solar or a generator, and a plan for both. January days are usually pleasant and nights are genuinely cold; the desert doesn't hold heat, and neither does an RV without a furnace running. Cell coverage strains under the crowd near the show dates. And the dust gets into everything you own, which longtime attendees describe with something close to affection.

If full boondocking is a bigger step than you want for a first visit, Quartzsite has commercial RV parks in town with hookups, and they book out around the Big Tent dates.

Doing Quartzsite in a rented RV

Quartzsite is the rare trip where the RV isn't transportation to the experience; it's the ticket. Rent a rig near Phoenix (about two hours east) or from the California side, and for the boondocking version, filter for what this trip actually requires: a generator or solar, decent tank capacity, and a furnace. Owners in this region know exactly what Quartzsite is, and many rigs are set up for it.

FAQ

When is the Quartzsite RV show in 2027?

The Sports, Vacation & RV Show (the Big Tent) runs January 15–23, 2027. The wider swap-meet and gem-show season stretches from November into February.

How much does it cost to camp at Quartzsite?

On BLM land: free for up to 14 days on ordinary public land, $40 for two weeks in a Long Term Visitor Area, or $180 for the full September-to-April season with access to water, dump, and trash services. Commercial RV parks in town charge normal nightly rates and fill up around the show.

Do you need reservations?

Not for the desert. LTVA permits are bought on arrival, and open BLM camping is first-come in the most literal sense. The in-town RV parks are the exception; book those ahead for January.

Is there anything in Quartzsite in summer?

Very little, on purpose. Summer temperatures are extreme, most vendors are gone, and the desert empties out. This is a November-to-February destination.
