Campgrounds near Coronation overview
Coronation sits in east-central Alberta's parkland-prairie transition, surrounded by small lakes, the Battle River valley, and Special Areas grasslands. The region is rural and uncrowded, with most campgrounds within an hour or two of town and reached by paved secondary highways suitable for RVs and trailers.
The closest provincial-park option is Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park, located about 12 km north of Consort on the north-western shore of Gooseberry Lake. To the north, Sedgewick Lake Park Campground sits next to the town of Sedgewick, and Forestburg Golf Club & RV Park offers a small full-service stop next to a nine-hole course. West of Coronation, Big Knife Provincial Park lies at the confluence of Big Knife Creek and the Battle River between the villages of Donalda and Forestburg, and farther southwest, Little Fish Lake Provincial Park sits in the prairie hills roughly 50 km southeast of Drumheller. The mix covers serviced family parks, quiet provincial sites, and basic prairie lakeshore camping.
Things to do near Coronation
Activities lean toward water, wildlife, and easy trails. At Gooseberry Lake, kids can cool off in the spray park and visitors can explore trails on foot or by bike, with the wetland providing an excellent place to see waterfowl and shorebirds, including the threatened piping plover. Sedgewick Lake Park has a wading pool, playground, picnic shelter, and dock, with a paved trail to the adjacent nine-hole golf course. At Big Knife Provincial Park, hiking trails lead to the hoodoos and along the Battle River valley, and water activities include canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and power boating. Little Fish Lake Provincial Park is best for birdwatching, paddling, and stargazing under dark prairie skies.

Camping is a strongly seasonal activity in this region. Most provincial and municipal campgrounds open in May and close in September or early October. Gooseberry Lake's full services typically run from the May long weekend through September, temperature dependent, while Big Knife Provincial Park is open during the summer from May to September, with only limited access during the winter months.
July and August are the peak months, with warm days, long evenings, and the busiest weekends falling around the May long weekend, Canada Day, and the August long weekend. June tends to be the wettest month and brings thunderstorms. At Gooseberry Lake there is no potable water in the park from mid-September until it closes in October, and at Big Knife potable water is only available from the July long weekend through the Labour Day long weekend, so shoulder-season travellers should arrive self-sufficient. Winter access is limited and overnight camping is generally not available at the provincial sites.

Summer weekends fill early, so reserve serviced sites several weeks ahead.
What to expect
Expect quiet, rural campgrounds rather than resort-style RV parks. Sites at Gooseberry Lake and Sedgewick Lake offer power and water hookups suitable for most rentals, while Big Knife and Little Fish Lake are more basic. At Gooseberry Lake, RVs and trailers up to 50 feet in length, including the tow vehicle, can be accommodated; trees and shrubs provide shade and privacy to some campsites, while others sit in open, grassy areas. At Little Fish Lake, plan to bring your own water, as water from the hand pump or tap is not safe for consumption and should only be used to put out fires. Firewood is not available at Big Knife or Little Fish Lake, so plan to bring or buy firewood locally. Cell coverage is patchy on backroads, and bear-smart and wildlife-aware practices apply across the region.
