Camping near Didsbury, Alberta

Didsbury sits in Mountain View County on the Highway 2 corridor between Calgary and Red Deer, putting RV renters within an hour of foothills recreation and a half day of the Rocky Mountains. The area is rural prairie and parkland, with the Little Red Deer River and Red Deer River drainages providing most of the nearby camping water access. Within about thirty minutes of town, OR Hedges Lions Campground in Olds offers powered municipal sites close to services, useful for renters who want a serviced base. Roughly forty-five minutes north and west, Camping Red Lodge Provincial Park sits along the banks of the Little Red Deer River, 15 km west of Bowden on Highway 587, a treed park with a rustic, family-friendly campground. Further northwest, Gleniffer Reservoir Provincial Recreational Area, Dickson Point and Dickson RV Resort cluster around Gleniffer Lake, the reservoir formed by the Dickson Dam on the Red Deer River. Together these options cover serviced, semi-serviced, and reservoir-front camping.

Things to do near Didsbury

Water activities anchor most trips in this area. At Camping Red Lodge Provincial Park, when water levels are safe, the Little Red Deer River is a popular hub for splashing around or fishing for Northern Pike and Mountain Whitefish. At Gleniffer Reservoir Provincial Recreational Area, paddling, swimming, and boating are common, and the trout pond at Dickson Point is popular for ice fishing in winter. Boat launches are available at the Cottonwood Day Use Area, South Dyke and Dickson Point, though water levels fluctuate on the reservoir throughout the year and launches are not functional until early summer. Onshore, sites support hiking, mountain biking, and shoreline relaxing. Day trips from Didsbury reach Calgary, Red Deer, the Cowboy Trail, and the Bow Valley.

The central Alberta camping season is short and weather driven. Most provincial sites open in mid-May and close in mid-October, with the core booking window running from the Victoria Day long weekend through Labour Day. Camping Red Lodge Provincial Park typically operates from May through September, and OR Hedges Lions Campground in Olds is generally open May 1 to October 15. June is the wettest month and the river system is prone to high water, which can affect access. Water levels fluctuate on the Gleniffer reservoir throughout the year, and boat launches are not functional until early summer, so paddlers should monitor advisories before towing a boat. July and August deliver the warmest, driest weather and the strongest demand for waterfront sites. September brings cool nights, thinner crowds, and good fishing. Winter camping is limited; the trout pond at Dickson Point is popular for ice fishing, but front-country campgrounds close once snow sets in.

Wonderful and comfortable experience with Robert’s motorhome. It was our family’s first weekend camping trip and we had everything that we needed.

It was our first time and it was amazing. Let's start with the RV inside — the bed is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. It is very big, and waking up and seeing the outside through the window is just incredible. The kitchen had everything we needed and it was so great. It had pots, plates, spoons, knives, even salt and garlic, so that was perfect. For cooking, we made rice, beef, eggs, and noodles, and there was enough propane, so that was very good too. It also had lots of cleaning supplies, like wipes, Clorox wipes, toilet paper, air freshener spray for the washroom, and hand soap. It also had some lanterns that were very useful. The seats for driving and the passenger seat next to it were super comfortable. We drove almost 10 hours and it never felt hard or small. It was perfect. It also included chairs and tables, which were perfect for sitting down and just admiring the view in the campground. I will always recommend this RV — it feels like you are in a wooden cabin. Also approved by our visitor Yuki (our cat) — he loved it! And about the host, Robert, the best person ever. Very sweet and very patient. At check-in, he explained everything we needed to know, which was very helpful, and he even came with us for a short drive just to teach us how to drive it and make us feel more comfortable driving the RV (it was our first time driving an RV). About driving the RV, it was very easy. At first, we were nervous because of how big it was, but actually it was quite easy. I felt it was the perfect size because when we needed to park it was easy (in a normal parking lot we took up two spots and it fit perfectly). So we were even able to park at the Canadian Superstore for some last-minute groceries. Oh, and we went from Calgary to Kelowna and we never had a problem. The RV worked properly even when we were fully loaded and going uphill. So that was great too.

At Gleniffer Reservoir Provincial Recreational Area, Dickson Point sites can be booked online, while three other campgrounds around the reservoir are first-come, first-served with basic sites and water access. Long weekends fill quickly, so reserve as soon as the booking window opens. OR Hedges Lions Campground is run by the Olds Lions Club and takes its own reservations by phone. Dickson RV Resort is privately operated and books directly through the resort. Reservation and change fees are non-refundable except in the event of a closure, so confirm dates before paying.

What to expect at Didsbury-area campgrounds

Sites range from serviced municipal stalls to rustic, unserviced provincial campsites. Camping Red Lodge Provincial Park has well-treed sites suitable for RVs and tents, with unserviced and 15/30 amp power options and a few sites right along the Little Red Deer River. RV renters should check current advisories at Red Lodge: a wastewater system project has closed the sani-dump, showers, and flush toilets, with vault toilets available throughout the campground and an alternative sani-dump in the town of Bowden. Gleniffer Reservoir sites are more basic: non-potable water is available from hand pumps, firewood is not sold on-site, and visitors should bring their own drinking water and firewood. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Highway 2 and patchier toward the reservoir.
