Camping near Starland County, Alberta
Starland County sits in east-central Alberta along the Red Deer River, immediately northeast of Drumheller and inside the Canadian Badlands. The county is rural and agricultural, but its location on the river valley puts RV travellers within a short drive of the Royal Tyrrell Museum, the Hoodoos, Horseshoe Canyon, and the Bleriot Ferry crossing on the Dinosaur Trail loop.
Most campgrounds in the area are small, river-valley sites rather than large resorts. Dinosaur RV Park, River Grove Campground and Cabins, 11 Bridges Campground and Cabins, and The Hoodoo RV Resort and Campground cluster around the Drumheller valley and offer powered RV sites with typical hookups. Bleriot Ferry Provincial Recreation Area has a small and quiet campground among giant cottonwood trees, with the Bleriot Ferry crossing the Red Deer River nearby to access the Town of Drumheller, and is the most basic of the group. Together they cover a range from full-service RV resort to quiet unserviced provincial campground, all within roughly half an hour of the county's main attractions.
Things to do near Starland County
The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Midland Provincial Park is the anchor attraction, holding one of the largest dinosaur fossil collections in the world. The Dinosaur Trail loops around the valley and crosses the Red Deer River on the cable-driven Bleriot Ferry, which operates seasonally and is closed in winter. Horseshoe Canyon, the Hoodoos Trail, and the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne are popular family stops. A short, wooded trail at Bleriot Ferry provides access to the Red Deer River for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, or just floating along through the winding badlands. Anglers fish for pike, walleye, and stocked rainbow trout at nearby dams and river access points. Hiking is best in the badlands coulees, where short trails climb out of the valley to prairie viewpoints.

The camping season in the Drumheller valley is short. Most private campgrounds open in late April or early May and close in early to mid-October once water lines are at risk of freezing. Alberta Parks sites in the area, including Bleriot Ferry Provincial Recreation Area, do not allow vehicle access when the campground is closed from mid-October to mid-May.
July and August are peak months. Daytime highs average in the low to mid-twenties Celsius, the badlands are dry and exposed, and weekends fill quickly around long weekends and summer holidays. June is the wettest month, with an average of about 92 mm of precipitation, and can bring thunderstorms and muddy trails, though wildflowers and green coulees make it visually striking. September offers cooler nights, fewer crowds, and generally stable weather. Winter camping options are very limited: the Bleriot Ferry stops running, and most riverside campgrounds shut down entirely.

Michael’s service and communication was outstanding. Trailer was very clean and well stocked with pretty much anything a camper would need. I highly recommend Michael and the Mini-Winnie!

We had a great experience with Michael's trailer! He was always very helpful with any questions we had and was always quick to reply. We had him deliver the trailer and he had it all set up when we arrived. The trailer is completely stocked with everything you could possibly need! We would definitely rent from Michael again!

How to book a campsite
Booking systems vary by operator. The 14 unserviced sites at Bleriot Ferry are available on a first-come, first-served basis, payment is by cash or cheque only, and campers should bring firewood and drinking water since neither is available on site. Starland County's own recreation areas are mostly first-come, first-served, with a few sites at Michichi, McLaren Dam, and Tolman Bridge East available through letscamp.ca. Private campgrounds in the Drumheller area, including Dinosaur RV Park, River Grove Campground and Cabins, 11 Bridges Campground and Cabins, and The Hoodoo RV Resort and Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For July and August weekends, book private sites several weeks in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open, exposed terrain. The Red Deer River valley is dry prairie and badlands, so shade is limited outside the cottonwood groves directly along the river. Private RV parks generally offer power, water, and sewer hookups, showers, and dump stations, while provincial and county sites tend to be unserviced with pit toilets. Cell coverage is reliable near Drumheller but spotty in the deeper coulees. Summer afternoons can be hot and windy, with sudden thunderstorms; mosquitoes are usually moderate near the river after wet spells. Approaches to Bleriot Ferry can involve a steep grade off the ferry that may damage hitches or trailers, so trailer users should arrive from the west side. Pack water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes for badlands hiking, and bring firewood locally since firewood is not available on site and campers should buy firewood locally to help stop the spread of forest pests, Dutch elm disease, and emerald ash borer.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Starland%20County%2C%20AlbertaWhat kind of license do I need to rent an RV in Starland County?
Good news: a regular Class 5 Alberta driver's license (or its equivalent from your home province, state or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Starland County. No commercial license, no air-brake endorsement, and no special RV certification is required for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit from your local auto club before you fly into Calgary. That's it, you're road-trip ready to explore the Red Deer River badlands.
alberta.ca/class-5-drivers-licenceIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included for my Starland County trip?
Yes, every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit Highway 27 toward the badlands with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout, and it covers most damage to the vehicle. Roadside support handles tire changes, lockouts, towing and battery boosts, which is reassuring on quieter county roads where cell signal can thin out near Tolman Bridge. Pick the protection level that fits your trip and book with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Starland County RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period built into every reservation so you can cancel shortly after booking without losing your trip cost. After the grace period, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Alberta weather can swing fast in shoulder seasons, so review the cancellation policy on RVezy before you confirm, and book early to lock in the best Starland County RV options knowing you have built-in flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Starland County RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Starland County listings, and the area is genuinely dog-paradise. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to narrow your search instantly, then message the host to confirm any pet fee or hair-cleaning add-on. Once you're here, dogs love the Michichi Creek Boardwalk inside Michichi Dam Campground, the open grasslands at Starland Recreation Area, and the cottonwood-shaded trails along the Red Deer River near Tolman East. Just keep pets leashed (Alberta Parks rule) and watch for cactus, prickly pear and porcupines in the badlands. Bring extra water bowls, the prairie sun is no joke in July and August.
albertaparks.ca/albertaparksca/visit-our-parks/visitor-info/pets-in-parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Starland County?
Yes, RV delivery in Starland County is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters, especially if you are flying into Calgary and don't want to tow a trailer up Highway 9. Many hosts will deliver and set up the motorhome directly at Starland Recreation Area, Michichi Dam Campground or Tolman Bridge, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check each host's delivery radius and fee, which usually scales with distance from Drumheller or Calgary. By the time you arrive, your campervan rental in Starland County is set up and you can start exploring the badlands within minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Starland%20County%2C%20AlbertaHow far can I drive on an RV rental in Starland County, and is unlimited mileage available?
Plenty of Starland County hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you want to road-trip beyond the badlands. Typical policies include 100 to 200 km per day with a small per-kilometre fee after that. For context: Drumheller and the Royal Tyrrell Museum are about 50 km south, Dinosaur Provincial Park is roughly 175 km southeast, Calgary is about 200 km southwest, and Banff is around 330 km west. Filter by mileage policy on each RVezy listing, and message the host if you have a longer itinerary in mind, they will often tailor a package to your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Starland%20County%2C%20AlbertaWhere are the best campgrounds near Starland County for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Starland County include Starland Recreation Area (50 sites along the Red Deer River, 10 km west of Morrin on Highway 27, $25 unserviced and $35 serviced per night), Michichi Dam Campground (18 powered sites with potable water, flush toilets and the scenic Michichi Creek Boardwalk), Tolman Bridge East and West (Alberta Parks sites under the cottonwoods, cash or cheque only), and nearby Little Fish Lake Provincial Park for quiet prairie-lake camping. Horseshoe Canyon and Dinosaur RV Park near Drumheller are great too if you want to stay closer to the museum. Starland County campgrounds open May 15 and close October 13 each season.
starlandcounty.com/campgroundsWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Starland County?
The sweet spot for RV camping Starland County is late May through mid-September, with Starland County campgrounds officially open May 15 to October 13. July and August deliver the warmest weather (daytime highs of 22 to 27 C, occasional 30+ C spikes), perfect for paddling the Red Deer River and hiking the badlands. June brings green coulees and wildflowers, while September is the local insider pick: cooler nights (5 to 10 C), fewer mosquitoes, golden cottonwoods, and the Alberta Star Party at Starland Campground under some of Canada's darkest skies. Spring shoulder season is great for budget travellers, just pack layers, prairie evenings can dip near freezing well into May.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one in Starland County?
You'll be more than okay. Starland County is one of the easiest places in Alberta for a first time renting an RV: traffic is light, highways like 27, 56 and 9 are well-maintained two-lane roads, and there are wide pull-outs at viewpoints throughout the badlands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through propane, water tanks, slide-outs, the generator and the dash before you drive away. You can message your host any time during the trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. Pro tip: practice a few turns in an empty parking lot in Drumheller before heading out, then take Highway 838 (the Dinosaur Trail) for a low-stress scenic loop.
alberta.ca/driving-vehiclesWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Starland County trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 56, a dead battery at Tolman Bridge, or a propane issue at Michichi Dam, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct lifeline for quick fixes like resetting the inverter or relighting the fridge, and most respond within minutes through the RVezy app. For mechanical service, Drumheller (about 50 km south) has RV repair shops and tire centres, and Calgary is roughly two hours away if anything more serious comes up. Save the roadside number in your phone at pickup and focus on the badlands sunsets, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Starland County?
A Starland County RV trip puts you in the middle of Alberta's most photogenic loops. Top RV road trip ideas from Starland County include: the Dinosaur Trail loop through Drumheller and the Royal Tyrrell Museum (about 50 km round trip), Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks (175 km southeast, a UNESCO World Heritage badlands site), Calgary and Heritage Park (about 200 km southwest), Banff and Lake Louise (330 to 390 km west for a full Rocky Mountain reset), and Edmonton plus Elk Island National Park (about 270 km north for bison and dark-sky camping). Cross-border trips into the US are allowed with many hosts, just confirm coverage details before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Starland%20County%2C%20AlbertaWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan ahead and fuel won't surprise you. Class B campervans average about 18 to 22 MPG (roughly 11 to 13 L/100 km), Class C motorhomes about 10 to 14 MPG (17 to 23 L/100 km), and large Class A coaches about 7 to 10 MPG (24 to 33 L/100 km). Towable trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Stations in Drumheller, Hanna and Three Hills are your closest fill-ups, so top up there before heading deeper into Starland County since rural pumps are sparse. Budget roughly $80 to $150 CAD in fuel for a long-weekend loop through the badlands, and use GasBuddy to find the cheapest pumps along Highway 9.
gasbuddy.com/gasprices/albertaHow far in advance should I book a campground in Starland County?
Booking early pays off. Starland County campground reservations open May 1 each year through letscamp.ca, and online registration is required for Michichi Dam Campground, McLaren Dam sites 1 through 18, and the Tolman Bridge East Group Site. For July and August long weekends (Canada Day, Heritage Day, Labour Day), aim to book 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Tolman East and West individual sites at Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park are first-come, first-served, so roll in by early Friday afternoon. Pro tip: midweek nights in June or September are almost always available walk-in, and that's when the Red Deer River Valley feels like your own private badlands.
albertaparks.ca/parks/central/dry-island-buffalo-jump-pp/What are local driving conditions like in Starland County?
Driving in Starland County is genuinely pleasant: light traffic, wide prairie skies, and well-signed highways like 27, 56, 9 and 838. Watch for a few local quirks: steep descents into the Red Deer River Valley (use lower gears, especially on Highway 838 near Horseshoe Canyon), occasional gravel sections on county roads, and strong crosswinds across open prairie, which can push high-profile motorhomes. Wildlife crossings spike at dawn and dusk, deer and the occasional pronghorn are common. Winter (November to March) brings ice, blowing snow and short daylight, so most RV rentals run May through October. Check 511 Alberta before you roll, it's the official live road and weather feed.
511.alberta.ca/What hookups and amenities can I expect at Starland County campgrounds?
You'll find honest, comfortable prairie camping. Most Starland County campgrounds offer firepits, picnic tables, potable water and pit or flush toilets, and several have powered sites (Michichi Dam has 18 powered sites; Starland Recreation Area has serviced and unserviced options at $35 and $25 per night). Michichi Dam also has coin-operated showers, a dump station, and an RV water and sewer fill station, ideal mid-trip. Tolman East and West have hand and boat launches plus shelter kitchens but are cash or cheque only. Sewer hookups at individual sites are rare in this area, so plan to dump every 3 to 4 days. The Michichi sani-dump is the most convenient option in the county.
starlandcounty.com/campgroundsWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Starland County?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Starland County comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, bunk or convertible dinette beds, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, furnace and air conditioning, propane, fresh and grey water tanks, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on the booking. Most Class C and Class A units include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add a TV, Bluetooth stereo and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Cookware, bedding and towels are commonly included as optional add-ons (some hosts include them free). Check each listing's amenities tab on RVezy, and message the host if you need something specific for your badlands trip.
alberta.ca/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and options are popular for Starland County RV rentals?
Local hosts make life easy with smart add-ons. Popular extras for a Starland County RV trip include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($10 to $30), portable BBQs ($25), generator use ($10 to $20 per hour after included hours), bike racks, and Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi ($15 to $40 per day, handy in the badlands where cell signal fades). Many hosts offer delivery and setup to Starland Recreation Area, Michichi Dam or Tolman Bridge for a flat fee based on distance from Drumheller or Calgary. Pickup is usually between 1 and 4 PM, drop-off by 11 AM, and mileage policies range from 100 km per day to unlimited. Every detail is right on the listing page.
starlandcounty.com/visitorsHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Starland County?
Payment is simple, transparent and entirely through RVezy, never directly to the host. When you book, you'll pay your rental total plus taxes and your chosen protection plan via credit card on the secure RVezy platform. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 CAD depending on the RV), then released after drop-off assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, keep the fuel and propane topped up to the levels noted on your contract, and dump the tanks at the Michichi Dam sani-station before returning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Starland County in the winter?
Winter RV rentals in Starland County are limited but possible for the right adventurer. Starland County's public campgrounds (Starland Recreation Area, Michichi Dam, Tolman East and West) are closed from mid-October to mid-May, so winter trips typically mean private RV parks in nearby Drumheller or boondocking on Crown land. A handful of RVezy hosts list four-season units with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power-ready setups, ideal for dark-sky stargazing or seeing the badlands dusted in snow. Pack for real cold (January averages dip to around minus 15 C), confirm propane levels at pickup, and ask your host about skirting and antifreeze for the plumbing.
