Campgrounds and RV parks near Three Hills, AB

The Red Deer River and the badlands drive most of what visitors come for. Paddlers and anglers can float the river for walleye and other species, while birdwatchers can spot raptors, kingfishers, and prairie songbirds along the valley. Day trips run easily to the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the hoodoos in and around Drumheller. Hiking is the other main draw. The road up to Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, near Huxley, accesses an upper viewpoint over the valley along with trails through coulees and cactus. Horseshoe Canyon, about a 15-minute drive from Drumheller, is the area's signature short hike with dramatic canyon views from the rim. Families staying near Irricana can walk across to the Pioneer Acres Museum agricultural collection.

Most campgrounds in this part of central Alberta run a short season tied to road access and freeze-up. Starland County campgrounds, including Tolman East and Tolman West, operate from mid-May through mid-October. Irricana Municipal Campground runs from mid-May into mid-September, with all reservations made online before arrival. At Bleriot Ferry Provincial Recreation Area, the campground is generally open from spring through fall and closes once vehicle access is no longer maintained. Fawn Meadows Lodge, Cabins and Year Round RV Park is the main year-round option in the immediate area for travellers planning a shoulder-season or winter trip. Late June is typically the wettest stretch of the year, with thunderstorms and occasional large hail moving through central Alberta. July and August bring the warmest weather and the heaviest demand, especially on long weekends. September and early October are usually dry and cool, with thinner crowds before sites close for the season. Snow and freezing nights are possible from late September onward, so water systems at unserviced provincial sites are shut off well before the official close date.

Expect a mix of full-service private parks and basic provincial sites. Horseshoe Canyon Campground offers 20, 30, and 50 amp power, potable water, and sewer hookups, along with flush toilets, showers, a general store, and Wi-Fi. Irricana Campground has 34 thirty-amp power sites and two fifty-amp sites, a sewage dump station, free showers, and biking and hiking trails nearby. Provincial sites are rustic. Tolman East and Tolman West sit among cottonwood trees with picnic tables, fire pits, dry toilets, and boat launches on the Red Deer River. At Bleriot Ferry, firewood is not available on site and visitors are asked to bring or buy firewood locally to limit pest spread, and campers should bring their own water as none is available at the campground. Cell service is patchy in the river valley, so download maps before leaving Three Hills.
