Lake activity drives most of the recreation in this part of Alberta. Dillberry Lake Provincial Park offers beaches, trails and a clear, spring-fed lake suitable for fishing, boating and paddling, with northern pike and yellow perch among the catches. Vermilion Provincial Park offers paddling on the reservoir plus approximately 5 km of paved trails and 15 km more that wind through the backcountry for walking, biking, and birdwatching through forest, grassland, and marsh. Gooseberry Lake is designated an Important Bird Area; the shallow lake is unsuitable for fishing, boating, or swimming, but it is excellent for viewing waterfowl and shorebirds, and a spray park offers a water feature for kids. Cross-country ski trails and ice fishing extend the season into winter at Vermilion and Dillberry.

The main camping season in east-central Alberta runs from the May long weekend through September, with shoulder windows in April and October depending on weather. Alberta Parks campgrounds such as Vermilion Provincial Park typically run a full-service summer season, with potable water shut off in mid to late September. Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park is open from May to October, with access closed from mid-October to early May. June is consistently the wettest month, with an average of around 92 mm of precipitation, so early-summer trips should plan for thunderstorms and soft ground at unserviced sites. July and August deliver the warmest, driest weather and the busiest weekends. September brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong birding as waterfowl stage on regional lakes. Winter access is limited but real: at Vermilion, pull-through sites B15, 17 and 19 remain open from October 31 to March 31, with self-registration in effect and no water or showers. Dillberry Lake's day-use area is open year round with roads plowed to provide access for ice fishing.

Expect prairie and parkland terrain, not mountains. Sites range from open grassy pads to wooded back-ins separated by stands of aspen. Vermilion has 124 sites, with 70 power, 6 power and water, and 19 power, water and sewer, plus showers, a playground, and a dump station. Gooseberry Lake has 18 reservable powered and water sites plus 32 unserviced first-come sites, and can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet including the tow vehicle. Dillberry Lake amenities include a playground, camp store, toilets, showers, fire pits, tap water, a sewage disposal station, and a fish-cleaning station. Richardson's ground squirrels exist in high populations at Vermilion, so secure food and keep tents closed. Cell coverage is reliable near towns and thinner on backroads.
