Campgrounds near Alturas, California
Alturas sits in California's remote northeastern corner, on the high-desert plateau of Modoc County at roughly 4,400 feet of elevation. The town serves as the main supply stop for RV travelers exploring the surrounding Modoc National Forest, the Warner Mountains, and the Goose Lake basin along the Oregon border. Highway 395 runs north to south through town, making Alturas a practical staging point for trips into northeastern California, southern Oregon, and northwestern Nevada.
Campground options range from full-hookup private resorts to rustic Forest Service sites. Likely Place Golf and RV Resort sits south of town near the community of Likely and pairs sites with on-site golf. Junipers Reservoir RV Resort lies northeast over the Oregon line near Lakeview and operates on a working cattle ranch. Goose Lake State Recreation Area, also just over the Oregon border, offers shaded grassy sites near the lakebed. Eagles Nest RV Park and Base Camp RV Park round out the closer private options for RV travelers who want hookups and easy highway access.
Things to do near Alturas
The surrounding Modoc National Forest covers nearly two million acres, with hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, and OHV riding as the main draws. The Warner Mountains rise east of town and top out above 8,500 feet, with the South Warner Wilderness offering backcountry trails and trout lakes. Birders target the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge south of Alturas, especially during spring and fall migration along the Pacific Flyway. Anglers fish Blue Lake, Reservoir C, and the West Fork of the Pit River. Day-trip options include Lava Beds National Monument to the west, with lava tube caves to explore, and the obsidian beds in the northern part of the forest. Wildlife sightings commonly include mule deer, pronghorn antelope, Rocky Mountain elk, and wild horses.

The practical RV season in the Alturas area runs from late spring through early fall. Snow typically begins in October or November and lingers through April, with winter temperatures regularly dropping below freezing at night. Many higher-elevation Forest Service campgrounds in the Warner Mountains, including Blue Lake and Reservoir C, open as weather permits, usually from mid-May to late October. Goose Lake State Recreation Area, the closest state park option, runs a seasonal camping window from May 1 to October 31 and closes from late October through mid-April.
Late spring brings migratory waterfowl through the refuge and runoff into seasonal lakebeds. Summer days are warm and dry, with July highs averaging in the low to mid 80s and very low humidity, though nights stay cool because of the elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in summer and can spark wildfires in the surrounding forest. September and early October offer cooler days, fall color in the aspens, and lighter crowds before snow returns.
How to book a campground near Alturas
Reservation systems vary by operator. Forest Service campgrounds in Modoc National Forest that take reservations use Recreation.gov, including the Blue Lake group site, while many smaller forest sites remain first-come, first-served. Goose Lake State Recreation Area, across the Oregon line, is non-reservable and operates first-come, first-served during its open season; it is closed from late October through mid-April. Private parks such as Likely Place Golf and RV Resort, Junipers Reservoir RV Resort, Eagles Nest RV Park, and Base Camp RV Park typically book direct by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends, hunting season in fall, and holiday weeks fill the fastest, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable. Check road and gate conditions before arrival, since spring access can be limited by mud or late snow.
What to expect
Alturas is small and remote. Modoc County is one of the least populated counties in California, so cell service is patchy outside town and fuel stops are spaced far apart. Top off the tank in Alturas before heading into the forest or up Highway 395. Grocery, hardware, and propane are available in town but selection is limited compared with larger hubs. Elevation sits around 4,400 feet, with higher campgrounds well above that, so expect cool nights even in midsummer and pack layers. Roads to Forest Service sites are often gravel and can be rough; larger rigs should check site length limits and access routes in advance. Wildlife is abundant, including deer crossing roads at dawn and dusk, so drive carefully. Dark skies make for excellent stargazing.

Good news: an RV rental in Alturas is one of the most affordable ways to explore California's remote northeast corner. On RVezy, towable trailers near Alturas average around $120 per night and motorhomes average about $200 per night, with most hosts offering 10 to 20 percent weekly and monthly discounts. For a cheap RV rental in Alturas, look at travel trailers or truck campers and consider booking midweek shoulder-season dates in May or September. visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/modoc-county/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Alturas, California?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent and drive nearly every RV on RVezy in Alturas. California only requires a Noncommercial Class B license for motorhomes over 40 feet long or over 26,000 pounds, and a Noncommercial Class A for trailers heavier than 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls well under those limits. You'll also need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. That's it, you're ready to hit Highway 395.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/Is my Alturas RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Alturas booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV so you can explore Modoc National Forest or drive Highway 299 with peace of mind. During checkout you choose your coverage level, and higher tiers reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility if something happens. Pro tip: pick your coverage tier before confirming and save the RVezy support number in your phone before heading into the cell-service gaps near the Warner Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Alturas RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts, and there is a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how close to your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. You can review the full policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking. Pro tip: book early for the popular July obsidian-collecting season so you have plenty of time to adjust if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Alturas RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Alturas is easy to find on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs, with any cleaning fee listed on the booking page. Modoc County is one of the most dog-friendly corners of California: leashed dogs are allowed on most trails in Modoc National Forest, around Dorris Reservoir at Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, and on the Pacific Crest Trail through the South Warner Wilderness. Pro tip: pack extra water since high desert summer afternoons can reach the 80s and shade is scarce on the Devil's Garden Plateau.
fws.gov/refuge/modocCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Alturas?
Yes, RV delivery in Alturas is one of the smartest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many hosts on RVezy will deliver and set up your rental at Sully's RV Park in town, Likely Place Golf and RV Resort south of town off Highway 395, or a dispersed site in Modoc National Forest. They will level the rig, connect hookups when available, and walk you through every system before leaving. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it and their delivery radius. Pro tip: delivery is great if you are flying into Reno-Tahoe and want the RV waiting for you in Alturas.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alturas%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive my RV from Alturas on one trip?
You can cover a lot of ground from Alturas, and many RVezy hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage so you do not have to watch the odometer. Hosts who set mileage caps usually allow around 100 to 150 miles per day, which is plenty for an Alturas RV trip into the surrounding region. Popular drives include Lava Beds National Monument (about 100 miles west via Highway 299 and 139), Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 135 miles southwest), Reno (about 170 miles south on Highway 395), and Crater Lake (about 175 miles northwest). Pro tip: check the mileage policy on the listing page and ask the host about a custom mileage add-on if you are planning a bigger loop.
nps.gov/labe/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Alturas, CA?
You are spoiled for choice on RV camping in Alturas. Top picks include Sully's RV Park right in town with 30/50-amp full hookups and big-rig pull-throughs; Likely Place Golf and RV Resort, south of town off Highway 395 with hookups, a golf course, and dark night skies for stargazing; Stough Reservoir Campground in the Warner Mountains for forested sites; Cave Lake Campground near the Oregon border for quiet shoreline camping; and Reservoir C in the Devil's Garden Ranger District for primitive sites near the boat ramp. Pro tip: book Likely Place a few weeks ahead for summer weekends, it fills up quickly.
fs.usda.gov/r05/modoc/recreation/camping-cabinsWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Alturas?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Alturas. Summer days run a comfortable 80 to 88 degrees F with cool 40s to 50s at night thanks to the 4,373-foot elevation, and July is typically very dry. Spring snow can linger into May at higher elevations like Cedar Pass, and fall brings stunning aspen color in the Warner Mountains through mid-October. Winters are cold and snowy with overnight lows in the 20s, so most Forest Service campgrounds close from November through April. Pro tip: target weekday departures in July and August for the best campground availability and lowest RV rental rates.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=Alturas%2CCAI have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Alturas?
Yes, a first time renting an RV in Alturas is honestly easier here than almost anywhere else in California. Traffic is minimal, Highway 395 and Highway 299 are well-maintained two-lane roads, and the town has just a few thousand residents, so parking is simple. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water tanks, the awning, and driving tips, and you can message them anytime during your trip. A renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance are included with every booking. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer in the 20 to 25 foot range, easy to handle on the curves up to the Warner Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if my RV breaks down near Alturas?
You are covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 395 or a dead battery at Dorris Reservoir is just a phone call away. Roadside dispatch handles tows, jump-starts, lockouts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. Your host is also available by message for quick fixes like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave Alturas, since cell service drops off quickly once you head into Modoc National Forest. Pro tip: download offline maps for the Warner Mountains and Devil's Garden areas, GPS is spotty past Cedarville.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alturas RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Alturas across state lines is one of the area's biggest draws since Oregon is just north and Nevada is just east. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, and some allow Canada travel, but always confirm cross-border plans with your host in a message before booking since insurance coverage can vary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular routes from Alturas include Highway 395 south to Reno and Lake Tahoe, Highway 140 northwest toward Crater Lake, and Highway 299 west across northern California. Pro tip: build in a Goose Lake stop right on the California-Oregon line.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for around Alturas?
Modoc County typically has some of the lower gas prices in California compared with coastal counties. Plan for roughly 8 to 12 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a campervan, and around 12 to 16 mpg combined for a truck pulling a travel trailer. A round trip from Alturas to Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 270 miles) will run roughly $130 to $190 in fuel for a typical Class C at current California prices. Pro tip: top off in Alturas or Cedarville before heading deep into Modoc National Forest, the next reliable pump is often 50+ miles away.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Alturas?
Booking campgrounds near Alturas is refreshingly low-stress compared to Yosemite or the California coast. For peak summer weekends in July and August, reserve developed sites like those at Medicine Lake or Stough Reservoir 2 to 3 months ahead through Recreation.gov, the official federal booking system. Private parks like Sully's RV Park and Likely Place Golf and RV Resort take direct reservations and usually have midweek availability even a week out. Dispersed camping in Modoc National Forest needs no reservation at all, up to 14 consecutive days per spot. Pro tip: a California Campfire Permit is free and required for any stove or fire outside developed campgrounds, grab one online before your trip.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Alturas?
Driving in and around Alturas is remarkably relaxed: light traffic, wide-open two-lane highways, and elevations between roughly 4,400 and 6,800 feet. Highway 395 and Highway 299 are the main arteries and are well-graded, though Cedar Pass on Highway 299 east to Cedarville climbs to about 6,305 feet with curves that ask for low gear in a motorhome. Watch for free-roaming mule deer at dawn and dusk, and for the famous Devil's Garden wild horses on the plateau north of town. Tire chains can be required from November through April. Pro tip: check Caltrans QuickMap before you go for live road conditions and chain controls on Highway 299 and Highway 139.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Alturas?
Campground amenities near Alturas range from full-service to true off-grid. Sully's RV Park in town offers 30/50-amp full hookups, water, showers, laundry, and a dump station. Likely Place Golf and RV Resort offers full hookups plus a restaurant and golf course. Forest Service campgrounds like Stough Reservoir, Reservoir C, and Cave Lake are dry camping only, expect vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. Fill fresh water in Alturas before heading out. Pro tip: many Forest Service sites have shorter RV length limits, so check the site length on Recreation.gov, while Sully's accommodates larger rigs with pull-throughs.
fs.usda.gov/r05/modoc/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat should I expect inside a typical Alturas RV rental?
Most RVezy rentals in Alturas come fully equipped for self-contained adventure. A typical Class C motorhome sleeps 4 to 6 with a queen bed over the cab, and includes a propane stove and oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, hot-water shower, toilet, furnace, roof-mounted air conditioner, dinette, and seatbelts for everyone driving. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts with often larger living rooms. Many hosts include a generator, outdoor camp chairs, and basic kitchen kits. Wi-Fi is rarely usable once you leave Alturas, so download maps and entertainment ahead. Pro tip: confirm the host includes heated tanks if you are booking a campervan rental in Alturas for September or October, since nighttime temps drop into the 30s fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alturas%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my motorhome rental in Alturas?
Hosts offer plenty of ways to customize your motorhome rental in Alturas. Common add-ons (each priced on the listing) can include bed linens and towels, kitchen kits, generator use, portable propane fire pits, bike racks, and post-trip cleaning. Many hosts offer delivery to Sully's RV Park, Likely Place, or trailheads in Modoc National Forest, often within a free radius and per-mile beyond. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Alturas with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited miles. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you are heading to dispersed sites without hookups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alturas%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Alturas?
Payment is simple and transparent on RVezy. You pay your booking total (nightly rate, fees, and protection plan) through the secure RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released after the trip if there is no damage or excess mileage. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: keep all communication and any pickup change requests inside the RVezy message thread, that is your record if anything needs reviewing later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I really rent an RV in Alturas during winter?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Alturas is possible and increasingly popular for snowshoeing, ice fishing on Dorris Reservoir, and Devil's Garden wild horse watching. Look for a host whose rig is set up for cold weather: heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a working propane furnace, and ideally shore-power hookups at a year-round park like Sully's RV Park. Daytime highs in December and January average around 40 degrees F with overnight lows in the low 20s, and snow is common but the dry climate means roads usually clear quickly. Chains may be required on Highway 299. Pro tip: message hosts directly to confirm winter readiness and book a site with full hookups so the furnace can run all night without draining the battery.
