Campgrounds near Dorris, California
Dorris sits in far northern Siskiyou County at the Oregon border, on US-97 between the Klamath Basin and the volcanic high desert of Lava Beds National Monument. The town is a practical staging point for RV travelers heading to the monument, the Klamath River, and the Klamath Basin wildlife refuges.
Options within an easy drive run from rustic federal sites to full-hookup RV parks. Indian Wells - Lava Beds National Monument sits in the heart of the monument and has 43 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, plus one reservable group site available April through October. North across the state line, Keno Camp by Pacific Power is beside Keno Reservoir along the Klamath River, downstream from Upper Klamath Lake, and is operated by PacifiCorp. Closer to Klamath Falls, Klamath Falls KOA Journey and Klamath Falls RV Resort provide full hookups, while Wild Goose Lodge Motel and RV offers a smaller roadside option. Together these cover the range from primitive volcanic-country camping to serviced parks suited to longer rigs.
Things to do near Dorris
The headline attraction is Lava Beds National Monument. The monument lies on the northeastern flank of Medicine Lake Volcano, the largest volcano by area in the Cascade Range, and has over 800 lava tubes, with 27 having marked entrances and developed trails for public access and exploration. Mushpot Cave has electrical lighting; the others are illuminated by ceiling collapse portals or require flashlights. Short trails lead to several historic sites, including Captain Jack's Stronghold from the Modoc War.
Beyond the caves, the Klamath Basin draws birders to Tule Lake and Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuges, especially during waterfowl migration. The Klamath River offers fishing and paddling, with bank access and a boat ramp at Keno Camp, and Upper Klamath Lake is a short drive north for boating. Dark skies above the lava plains make stargazing a routine evening activity.

The Dorris area sits above 4,000 feet, so seasons run colder and drier than the Oregon coast. Winter brings hard freezes, snow, and limited services. Many monument trails remain open, but cave temperatures stay near freezing year-round and roads can be icy. The Indian Well group site is closed during the cold months, as its access road is unpaved and impassable in winter conditions.
Spring is variable, with snowmelt, mud, and lingering cold nights into May. Most private RV parks reopen, and migratory bird traffic peaks at Klamath Basin refuges. Summer is warm, dry, and bright, with hot afternoons in the lava country and cool nights. Keno Camp by Pacific Power runs a seasonal schedule, typically open from mid-May to early October depending on weather and host availability.
Fall brings cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and another wave of waterfowl through the refuges. October typically sees the first freezes and shoulder-season closures at smaller parks.
Booking and reservations
Reservation systems vary by operator. Indian Wells - Lava Beds National Monument does not accept reservations for its standard sites and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan to arrive midweek or early in the day during summer. The monument's group site is the exception and is booked through Recreation.gov for the April through October window.
Keno Camp by Pacific Power is also first-come, first-served during its summer season, with no online reservation system. Klamath Falls KOA Journey books through the KOA reservation network, and Klamath Falls RV Resort and Wild Goose Lodge Motel and RV handle reservations directly through their own offices. For holiday weekends and the fall bird migration, lock in serviced sites several weeks out. If an RV rental is being delivered, confirm the campground accepts third-party drop-off and check rig-length limits before booking.
What to expect on arrival
Dorris itself is small, with limited fuel, groceries, and propane, so top off in Klamath Falls if arriving from the north. Cell coverage is patchy once off US-97, and drops further inside the monument. At Indian Well, each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and cooking grill, and restrooms with flush toilets and water are available. Showers, hookups, dump stations, gas, propane, and firewood sales are not available inside the monument. Sites accommodate tents, pickup campers, small trailers, and motor homes up to 30 feet, though not every site fits a motor home.
Full hookups, dumps, and showers are found at the Klamath Falls RV parks and at Keno Camp. Bring layers for cold nights, sturdy shoes and headlamps for caves, and extra drinking water for any stay inside the monument.

You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the individual host, and the specific terms depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. The full policy is outlined in the RVezy Help Center and shown during checkout so you know exactly where you stand. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dorris RV rental?
Absolutely. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Dorris, CA, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them all. Most surrounding U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in Klamath National Forest welcome leashed pets as well. Bring a long lead and plenty of water, summer afternoons can reach the upper 80s and shade is sparse out on the sagebrush flats.
fws.gov/refuge/lower-klamath/visit-us/rules-and-policiesCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Dorris?
Yes, RV delivery in Dorris is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer right to Indian Well Campground at Lava Beds National Monument, a nearby Klamath National Forest site, or a private property in town, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through the systems. Use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host with your destination to confirm fees, which often run a few dollars per mile from their location. It is the easiest way to skip the learning curve and head straight to exploring.
nps.gov/labe/planyourvisit/camping.htmHow far can I drive from Dorris on an RV road trip?
Dorris is at the doorstep of some of the West's best road trips. Crater Lake National Park is about 80 miles north (roughly 2 hours), Lava Beds National Monument is about 35 miles southeast, Mount Shasta sits about 75 miles southwest, Lassen Volcanic National Park is around 160 miles south, and Bend, Oregon is about 175 miles north. Many RVezy hosts offer generous or unlimited mileage packages, so check the mileage policy on each listing before booking. A 5-day RV road trip from Dorris easily loops Crater Lake, Lava Beds, and the Klamath Basin refuges with daily drives under 3 hours, which is perfect pacing for a relaxed family RV trip.
nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Dorris, CA?
You have great options nearby. Indian Well Campground inside Lava Beds National Monument offers 40 sites at about 4,700 feet elevation surrounded by lava flows. Juanita Lake Campground in Klamath National Forest, roughly 15 miles southwest, has quiet lakeside sites, and Medicine Lake Campground delivers a true high-country experience. Just over the Oregon line, the Klamath Falls KOA is a popular full-service option about 25 miles north. Federal campgrounds book through Recreation.gov, so reserve 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends to lock in the best campgrounds near Dorris.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233297When is the best time to rent an RV in Dorris, CA?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Dorris, with daytime highs ranging from the upper 60s to mid 80s and cool, starry nights. July and August are the warmest and driest, perfect for cave exploring at Lava Beds. September and early October bring fewer crowds and the famous fall waterfowl migration through Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge along the Pacific Flyway. Winters are genuinely cold, with overnight lows often in the 20s and snow on the ground, so many hosts pause bookings from December through March. Late September is a local favorite, with mild days, quiet campgrounds, and bald eagles starting to arrive.
weather.gov/mfr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and Dorris is one of the friendliest places in California to learn. Highway 97 is wide, flat, and lightly trafficked, with long sight lines across the Butte Valley and almost no city driving in sight. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering hookups, the generator, slide-outs, dumping, and driving tips, and you can message them any time during your trip. Stick with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first time renting an RV, and choose delivery so you can skip the highway entirely. Practice a few turns in a wide gravel lot near the Dorris flagpole before heading out to Lava Beds.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/What happens if I have a breakdown during my trip?
Help is always close, even in this remote corner of California. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. Cell service is reliable along Highway 97 and around Klamath Falls, though it can get patchy inside Lava Beds National Monument and along forest service roads, so download offline maps before heading out. One call connects you to roadside dispatch, and your host is a message away for questions about the rig. The nearest full-service RV repair and parts are in Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 25 minutes north.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dorris RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to interstate travel, and Dorris is a perfect launchpad. You are only about 5 miles from the Oregon border, so popular routes for an RV road trip from Dorris include Crater Lake, Bend, and the Oregon Coast. Cross-border travel into Canada or Mexico depends on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm what is allowed. Keep your booking confirmation and ID handy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection occasionally runs checkpoints on Highway 97 north of Dorris.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Dorris RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier parts of budgeting here. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers around 10 to 13 mpg. California gas typically runs higher per gallon than Oregon, so many travelers fill up across the state line in Klamath Falls. For a 5-day, 400-mile loop through Crater Lake, Lava Beds, and the Klamath refuges, plan on roughly $180 to $280 in fuel for a Class C. The Pilot in Klamath Falls has easy big-rig access and is a convenient last fuel stop before heading deep into California.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Dorris?
Earlier is better, but you have more flexibility here than at California's coastal parks. Indian Well Campground inside Lava Beds National Monument is first-come, first-served and rarely fills except on holiday weekends, while Crater Lake's Mazama Campground opens reservations several months out on Recreation.gov and books quickly for July and August. Klamath Falls KOA can usually be booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead even in peak summer. For the fall bird migration in October, reserve sites near Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge by mid-August, photographers and birders snap up the best campgrounds near Dorris quickly once the sandhill cranes arrive.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233297What are driving conditions like around Dorris?
Driving here is refreshingly easy. Highway 97 runs straight through Dorris with wide shoulders, gentle grades, and light traffic, which makes it ideal for first-time RV drivers. Watch for crosswinds across the Butte Valley grasslands, deer at dusk, and occasional cattle on rural roads. Winter (November through March) can bring snow, black ice, and chain controls on mountain passes, so plan an RV trip in Dorris between May and October if you are new to RVing. Inside Lava Beds National Monument, roads are paved but narrow and twisty, so larger Class A motorhomes should stop at the visitor center first. Fill up in Dorris before heading to Lava Beds, the next station is many miles away.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dorris?
You will find a great mix. Klamath Falls KOA across the state line offers 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, a pool, and a dump station. Forest service campgrounds like Juanita Lake have vault toilets and potable water but no hookups, perfect for self-contained RVs. Indian Well Campground at Lava Beds has flush toilets and water available in the warmer months. The most convenient dump station and potable water fill near Dorris is at Klamath Falls KOA or the Pilot truck stop in Klamath Falls. Top off your fresh water tank before heading to dispersed sites in Klamath National Forest.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/klamath/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Dorris?
More than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental in Dorris comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, dining area, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for every passenger listed on the booking. Most rigs include a generator for off-grid stays, a TV, and many newer rentals on RVezy offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink, which is especially handy out near Lava Beds where cell signal drops. Campervan rentals in Dorris are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Use the sleeps filter on RVezy to match the rig to your crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorris,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Dorris?
Hosts in this area offer some of the most useful add-ons in the Shasta Cascade region. Common options include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots and dishware, camping chairs and outdoor tables, generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages with bowls and beds. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Dorris or Klamath Falls, with delivery available to local campgrounds and Lava Beds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 to 150 miles per day, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Bundle delivery with linens for the smoothest hands-off start to your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorris,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Dorris, CA on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. Your protection plan covers most accidental damage above the deposit. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff. Keep receipts for propane refills and dump fees, some hosts reimburse these as part of the booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Dorris in winter?
You can, and a winter RV trip in Dorris is a hidden gem if you are prepared. Some RVezy hosts keep listings active year-round for snowy adventures to Lava Beds (the caves stay around 55F inside even in January) and bald eagle viewing at Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, a well-known winter gathering spot for bald eagles in the lower 48. Look for rigs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and shore power capability, then book a campground with electric hookups like the Klamath Falls KOA. Overnight lows can drop into the teens to 20s, so your host will walk you through tank-warming and antifreeze procedures at pickup. Pack tire chains, Highway 97 can require them between November and April.
