Campgrounds and RV parks near Montague, CA

Most trips combine in-town basing with day drives. The Klamath River, recently restored after the removal of four hydroelectric dams between 2023 and 2024, draws anglers, paddlers, and wildlife watchers along Copco Road and Highway 96. Lake Shastina, about 15 miles southeast of Montague near Weed, offers boating, swimming, and bass fishing with open Mount Shasta views. Mount Shasta itself anchors hiking and alpine sightseeing in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The Lower Klamath and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuges, northeast of town, are major stops on the Pacific Flyway and good for birding in spring and fall. Yreka adds a historic downtown, museums, and western trailhead approaches to the Marble Mountain and Russian Wilderness areas. Montague also hosts an annual hot-air balloon fair at the Montague Airport each September, a useful planning anchor for a fall trip.

The Shasta Valley sits in a rain shadow created by the Klamath Mountains, giving Montague a climate closer to points east of the Cascades than to coastal California. Summers are hot and dry, with highs commonly in the upper 80s and 90s Fahrenheit, near-constant sunshine, and very little measurable rain from June through September. Nights cool quickly because of elevation, so even July and August evenings can drop into the low 50s. Wildfire smoke is a real summer variable across the Klamath and Cascade ranges, and air-quality conditions can shift trip plans on short notice. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cold nights, and lighter campground demand. Winter brings cold nights, frequent frosts, and periodic snow; some private RV parks stay open year-round, but higher-elevation forest service and lakeside campgrounds in the surrounding area typically close from late fall through spring. Check road status before driving back-country routes after storms, since snow and ice can linger on shaded grades.

Expect a high-desert, ranch-country feel rather than a forested mountain setting. Days are bright and dry, with strong sun and low humidity, and nights are noticeably cool because of the roughly 2,500-foot elevation. RV access along I-5 is straightforward, and the Yreka and Montague area is set up for travelers, with fuel, groceries, propane, and dump stations within a short drive. Sites near the freeway or the Union Pacific main line can pick up road and train noise, which is worth checking when picking a specific park. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along I-5 but degrades quickly on back roads into the Klamath River canyon and the surrounding national forests. Carry water, recovery basics, and a paper map for any side trip onto unpaved Copco, Ager-Beswick, or forest roads.
