Camping near Ripley, California
Ripley sits in the Palo Verde Valley of eastern Riverside County, a few miles south of Blythe along the lower Colorado River. The river forms the California-Arizona border here, and the camping options cluster on both banks within a short drive of Interstate 10. The climate is sub-tropical desert, with mild winters and very hot summers, and the Palo Verde Valley is one of the lowland, and therefore hottest, areas of California's deserts.
RV travelers choose this area for direct river access, easy boat launches, and reliable winter sunshine. Destiny Mcintyre Park and The Cove RV Resort sit on the California side, while Arizona Oasis, The Palms at River Edge, and River Sands RV Resort line the opposite bank in Ehrenberg and nearby Arizona communities. The mix of private resorts and county-operated riverfront sites makes the area workable for weekend trips, family vacations, and extended snowbird stays. Most visitors combine river time with day trips to Blythe for supplies and to Quartzsite for its winter RV scene.
Things to do near Ripley
The Colorado River is the centerpiece. Visitors fish, boat, kayak, swim, and water-ski directly from riverside resorts, with catfish and largemouth bass the common catches. Off the water, the Blythe Intaglios (large prehistoric ground figures north of town) and the Palo Verde Historical Museum are short drives away. The Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, south along the river, draws birders in the cooler months. ATV and OHV trails run from several riverside resorts into surrounding BLM desert. Cross the river into Arizona and Quartzsite is about half an hour northeast, known for its winter gem and mineral shows and sprawling BLM camping.

March - May
84° / 62°F 3 mmWarm and dry; windy days affect river boating

June - August

September - November
85° / 63°F 7 mmHot September cools fast; ideal by November
- winter
December - February
67° / 48°F 13 mmMild and sunny; peak snowbird season, book early
Seasonality drives every trip decision here. The cool months from November through March are the prime window, when daytime highs are comfortable and snowbirds fill long-term sites and nearby BLM areas. Reserve well ahead for that stretch, especially around the Quartzsite shows in January and February.
Spring stays warm and dry but turns windy, which affects boating on the river and pushes sand across exposed sites. By late May, daytime heat climbs sharply. On the hottest days of the year, the temperature usually reaches 47/48 °C (117/118 °F). Summer trips are viable for water-focused visitors who plan around the heat: river time in the morning and evening, shade and air conditioning midday. Most snowbirds depart by mid-April as temperatures climb.
Fall reverses the pattern. September is still hot, October cools quickly, and by November the area returns to peak comfort. Late summer can also bring brief monsoon thunderstorms and flash-flood risk in desert washes.
How to book a campsite near Ripley
Private resorts in the area, including Destiny Mcintyre Park, The Cove RV Resort, Arizona Oasis, The Palms at River Edge, and River Sands RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Riverfront resorts fill weekends from October through March, and major holidays book months in advance. Booking eight to twelve weeks out is reasonable for winter dates, sooner for long weekends.
For public-land options across the river in Arizona, the BLM operates the La Posa Long Term Visitor Area near Quartzsite. The LTVA long term permit allows use of Bureau of Land Management designated LTVAs continuously from September 15th to April 15th, and the short-visit permit allows use for any 14 consecutive day period from September 15th to April 15th. The short-visit permit may be renewed an unlimited number of times for the cost of the permit, and LTVA permits are valid at all of the Bureau of Land Management LTVAs. Permits can be purchased through Recreation.gov before arrival.
What to expect
Most riverfront resorts here are flat, full-hookup, with boat ramps, beach access, and on-site stores. Sites are often close together and run in long rows facing the water. Expect a mix of nightly travelers and long-term snowbirds, especially in winter. Generators, ATV traffic, and boat noise are common, and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.
Shade is limited outside developed resorts, so awnings, sun shades, and extra water matter. Cell coverage is generally workable near Blythe and Ehrenberg but thins on BLM land. Roads in and out of the river resorts are paved but narrow in places, and some interior sites are tight for larger Class A rigs. Pets are welcome at most properties. Mosquitoes can be active near the river after dusk in warmer months, so bring repellent.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ripley, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ripley, CA?
RV rental in Ripley, CA is one of the more affordable options in Southern California because it sits in the quiet Palo Verde Valley just south of Blythe, away from coastal premium pricing. Expect travel trailers from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400, with weekly discounts common. For a cheap RV rental in Ripley, target the shoulder months of October and April when desert weather is comfortable but snowbird demand has not peaked. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and consider a slightly older travel trailer parked nearby in Blythe to keep delivery fees low and your Colorado River weekend well under budget.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ripley%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Ripley, CA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ripley, CA, even for a 30-foot Class C or a big fifth wheel. California does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license for non-commercial motorhomes under 40 feet, so your everyday license works perfectly. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform when you book, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before you fly in and you're ready to roll out toward the Colorado River.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/Is the RV protected if something goes wrong on my Ripley trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Ripley, CA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are covered from the moment you pull off Highway 78. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the peace of mind that fits your trip. It provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens out near the Colorado River or on the long stretch of I-10. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully at booking, since the higher tiers significantly lower your out-of-pocket responsibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Ripley RV booking?
Booking your Ripley RV trip is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refunds beyond the grace period depend on how far out you cancel, and RVezy also has built-in protections for unusual situations. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits, and support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, then relax knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Ripley, CA?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Ripley, CA is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome dogs (many even leave bowls, leashes, and pet beds). The Palo Verde Valley is a great dog destination: Mayflower Regional Park in nearby Blythe has shaded grassy sites along the Colorado River where leashed pets are welcome, and Hidden Beaches River Resort has off-leash beach access for splashing around. Pro tip: bring extra water and walk dogs early or late in the day, since the desert pavement gets too hot for paws between June and September.
rivcoparks.org/regional-parks-campgrounds/mayflower-regional-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in or near Ripley?
Yes, RV delivery in Ripley is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Palm Springs or driving in from Phoenix and do not want to tow. Many RVezy hosts in the Blythe and Palo Verde area will deliver the RV directly to Mayflower Regional Park, McIntyre County Park, or a private spot along the river, then set up the awning, slide-outs, and hookups and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm delivery to your specific campground, and ask about a stocked setup with linens, camp chairs, and a propane fill for an effortless arrival.
rvezy.com/How far can I drive and what's the mileage policy?
Most Ripley RV hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, with additional miles typically $0.35 to $0.50 each, and you can absolutely find an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you plan a longer loop. Ripley sits right on State Route 78 with quick access to I-10, so you can reach Joshua Tree National Park in about 90 miles, Lake Havasu in roughly 100 miles, Phoenix in about 150 miles, Palm Springs in around 110 miles, and San Diego in about 230 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a big circle through Joshua Tree and back, message the host with your route so they can quote a flat mileage package upfront.
nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere should I stay with my RV near Ripley, CA?
You're spoiled for choice when RV camping near Ripley because the Colorado River corridor is packed with great parks. Mayflower Regional Park in Blythe offers 152 RV sites with water and electric right along the river plus a dump station on site. Hidden Beaches River Resort has riverfront pads with patios, 30/50-amp hookups, and a dock. McIntyre County Park is a quieter Riverside County option with shaded sites, and BLM Oxbow Campground near Cibola Wildlife Refuge offers $15/night dry camping (half price with a federal park pass). Pro tip: snowbird season runs November through March, so reserve riverfront sites at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for the best views.
rivcoparks.org/regional-parks-campgrounds/mayflower-regional-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Ripley?
The sweet spot for a Ripley RV trip is mid-October through mid-April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 85°F range and nights cool into the 40s and 50s, perfect for campfires along the Colorado River. Summer is genuinely intense here, with July highs averaging around 108°F and frequent stretches above 110°F, so most travelers skip June through September unless they're chasing river-float weather and have a strong RV air conditioner. Pro tip: late February and March are magical, with desert wildflowers blooming in the surrounding Sonoran Desert and Joshua Tree National Park just 90 miles west.
weather.gov/psr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to be great, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, awning, water hookups, holding tanks, and propane, so nothing is a mystery before you pull away. Ripley is an ideal first-timer destination because the surrounding roads are flat, traffic is minimal, and I-10 has wide lanes and plentiful truck stops for easy fueling. Hosts are also a quick text away during your trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a 20-to-25-foot travel trailer for your first family RV trip in Ripley, since they drive like a large van and park easily at riverfront sites.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/What if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so one phone call brings help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow needs, whether you're on the I-10 stretch between Blythe and Indio or out on a dirt road near the Hauser Geode Beds. Your host is also reachable by message for quick troubleshooting on appliances or hookups, and RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave Ripley, since cell coverage can get patchy between Desert Center and Chiriaco Summit on the way to Joshua Tree.
chp.ca.gov/programs-services/programs/freeway-service-patrolCan I take the RV across the border into Arizona or Mexico?
Crossing into Arizona is totally fine and one of the best parts of a Ripley RV trip, since the state line sits just 20 miles east at Ehrenberg, making destinations like Quartzsite, Lake Havasu, and Sedona easy add-ons with no extra paperwork. Travel into Mexico, however, is not allowed on RVezy rentals because the protection package and roadside assistance don't extend across that border. For Canada-bound adventures from Southern California, message the host first since cross-border trips depend on the specific listing. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Ripley loops east through Quartzsite's famous January gem show, north to Lake Havasu City, then back via Parker, all within 200 miles.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and what will it cost?
Plan on 7 to 10 mpg for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C motorhomes, and 12 to 18 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer in the flat desert terrain around Ripley. California gas prices are typically higher than Arizona's, so the smart move is to fill up across the state line in Ehrenberg or Quartzsite where diesel and regular often run $0.60 to $1.00 cheaper per gallon. For a 4-day Colorado River trip with 400 miles driven, budget roughly $180 to $280 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stations along I-10 between Blythe and Indio before you roll out.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far ahead should I book campgrounds near Ripley?
For the best campgrounds near Ripley, book 4 to 8 weeks ahead during peak snowbird season (November through March) and 2 to 3 weeks ahead the rest of the year. Mayflower Regional Park reservations go through Riverside County Regional Parks, BLM sites along the Colorado River (like Oxbow) are first-come-first-served or via Recreation.gov, and private resorts like Hidden Beaches and The Cove RV Resort take reservations directly by phone or online. Holiday weekends and the Quartzsite Big Tent RV Show in January book out fastest. Pro tip: if riverfront sites are full, grab a McIntyre County Park spot and day-trip to the river, you'll save money and still enjoy the desert sunsets.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the driving conditions like around Ripley?
Driving an RV around Ripley is refreshingly easy: State Route 78 and I-10 are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to coastal California, with long sight lines across the Palo Verde Valley farmland. The biggest things to watch for are strong afternoon crosswinds along I-10 between Desert Center and Blythe (slow down to 55 mph if gusts pick up), occasional blowing sand, and summer flash-flood washes that can briefly close low desert roads after thunderstorms. Avoid driving during the hottest part of summer afternoons to protect your tires. Pro tip: fuel up and check tire pressure in Blythe before heading west, the next major services along I-10 are 50 miles away at Desert Center.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Ripley?
Campgrounds around Ripley are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Mayflower Regional Park has full water and electric hookups, an on-site dump station near the first trash enclosure, clean restrooms and showers, and a boat ramp. Hidden Beaches River Resort offers 30 and 50-amp service, free WiFi, laundry, a country store, and propane refills on site. Most private parks in Blythe have potable water fills, sewer hookups, and dump stations. For free dumping, the Blythe area also has a public station. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before heading into BLM dispersed camping near the Cibola Wildlife Refuge, since dry-camping sites have no hookups but reward you with riverfront solitude.
rivcoparks.org/regional-parks-campgrounds/mayflower-regional-park/What equipment comes with the RV I rent in Ripley?
Your Ripley RV rental arrives genuinely road-ready. Most motorhome and travel trailer listings include real beds with mattresses, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts also include a TV, generator or solar setup, outdoor camp chairs, and BBQ, which is huge for Colorado River evenings. WiFi via cell hotspot is common but can be spotty east of Blythe, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm essentials like bedding, kitchen supplies, and a generator if you plan to boondock at BLM Oxbow or the Midland LTVA north of Blythe.
blm.gov/visit/midlandWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Ripley rental?
Hosts offering motorhome rental in Ripley typically have a great menu of add-ons: linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for the Colorado River), generators, outdoor mats, BBQs, and pet packages, with each priced individually by the host. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or near Blythe, but delivery to Mayflower Park, Hidden Beaches, or McIntyre County Park is widely available for a mileage-based fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with unlimited-mileage options available on select listings. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a paddleboard add-on to skip towing entirely and step straight into vacation mode at the river.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ripley%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your campervan rental in Ripley is handled securely through RVezy at the time of booking, so there is no cash, checks, or awkward payment app exchanges with the host. You will see the trip total clearly broken out (rental rate, host add-ons, service fee, taxes, protection plan) before you confirm. The security deposit is a separate pre-authorization hold placed on your card shortly before pickup, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and with tanks handled per the listing terms. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off to keep the deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle summer heat in an RV around Ripley?
Ripley sits in one of the hottest pockets of California, with July averaging 108°F and stretches above 115°F not unusual, so summer RV trips are absolutely possible with a smart plan. Choose a rental with a strong roof AC (or dual ACs), stay at a full-hookup park like Mayflower Regional Park or Hidden Beaches so you can run AC on shore power, drive early morning or after sunset, and park with the door facing east to keep afternoon sun off the slide-outs. Hydrate constantly and keep the river within walking distance. Pro tip: October through April delivers the same blue-sky desert magic with daytime highs in the 70s and 80s, making shoulder seasons the smart-money move for an RV camping Ripley adventure.
