Campgrounds and RV parks near Abingdon, IL

Fishing and boating anchor most trips. Argyle Lake covers 93 acres and holds largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, with a boat ramp, docks, and seasonal rentals available at the concession stand. Delabar State Park offers a boat ramp on the south end for direct access to the Mississippi River, where anglers target channel cat, bass, bluegill, and crappie. On land, Argyle Lake has more than five miles of foot trails through mature woods, plus equestrian and mountain-bike trails, an archery range, and a playground. Delabar adds about two miles of woodland trails and reliable bird-watching, with more than fifty species recorded in the park. Families staying at private parks such as Shady Lakes RV Resort or Haven Hills Campground & Resort can combine on-site amenities with day trips into Galesburg.

The core camping season runs from late April through October. Spring brings mild temperatures, vibrant foliage, and the wettest stretch of the year, with May typically the rainiest month. Trails can be muddy, and mosquitoes and ticks pick up quickly as the woods green out. Insect repellent and tick checks are standard practice at Argyle Lake and Delabar. Summer is peak season. Weekends at Argyle Lake State Park often fill, so reservations should be made well ahead for holidays and prime fishing weekends. Heat and humidity build in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall offers the most comfortable RV weather: cool nights, lower humidity, and strong color through the oak-hickory woods. Winter camping is limited. Delabar State Park offers RV camping year-round and sees ice fishing on Mississippi backwaters when conditions allow, while Argyle Lake shifts to cold-weather use with ice fishing, sledding, and cross-country skiing when snow cover permits.

At Argyle Lake State Park, the Twisted Oak loop has 86 Class A sites with showers and electricity, Big Oaks offers 24 Class B/E electric-only sites and 18 Class C vehicle-access sites with restrooms, and Twin Oaks holds 31 primitive Class D spots. A dump station and shower buildings serve the park. Sites are wooded, with mature tree cover and generous spacing. Delabar State Park runs a simpler operation. More than fifty sites offer 30-amp electric hookups with shared drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a jet pump for filling trailers, but no sewer at individual sites. Campers register with park staff for a permit before setting up. Rigs up to about 46 feet can be accommodated, though sites tend to suit smaller trailers better. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the deeper wooded loops, and ticks are common in warm months at both state parks.
