Campgrounds and RV parks near Arcola, IL

Arcola sits in Douglas County in east-central Illinois, at Exit 203 off Interstate 57. It is a practical base for RV trips: the town is flat, easy to navigate, and within a short drive of several Illinois state parks and the Lake Shelbyville reservoir system. The closest public campground is Gray Squirrel - Walnut Point State Park, about 15 miles east near Oakland. The park surrounds a small lake with electric RV sites, a shower house, and a dump station. Fox Ridge State Park lies south of Arcola near Charleston, with a wooded ridge-and-ravine setting along the Embarras River that contrasts sharply with the surrounding prairie farmland. For lake-based trips, Wolf Creek State Park Riding and Sullivan Marina and Campgrounds Resort both sit on Lake Shelbyville, an 11,100-acre reservoir shared with Eagle Creek State Recreation Area. Lakeside Timbers RV Campground rounds out the private-park options in the area. Together these campgrounds cover the main styles of Illinois RV travel: state-park electric sites, full-hookup private parks, and marina-side lake camping.

Illinois state park sites are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. This applies to Fox Ridge, Walnut Point, and Wolf Creek. At each park a portion of sites are reservable while others remain first-come, first-served, so a backup plan is smart on peak weekends. Wolf Creek and other Lake Shelbyville state-park sites use a defined reservation window: requests are accepted starting in January for arrival dates between May 1 and October 31. Outside that window, open sites are first-come, first-served where the campground is open. Reservations must be made at least three days before arrival, and holiday weekends often require a multi-night minimum stay. Private parks book directly through their operators. Sullivan Marina and Campgrounds Resort caters largely to seasonal campers and fills well in advance, so reserve early for July, August, and holiday weekends.
