For state park camping on the water, Hickory Point in Sangchris Lake State Park sits near the east boat dock and contains 54 Class A electric sites, 8 Class C tent sites, and 2 primitive cabins, with many sites lakefront. Things to do near Athens
Springfield anchors most itineraries. Illinois' capital is the heart of Abraham Lincoln country, where visitors can tour the 16th president's home, law offices, and Old State Capitol, view the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, pay respects at Lincoln's Tomb, and visit the New Salem State Historic Site, where costumed guides recreate the 1830s town where the future president lived and worked.
On the water, Sangchris Lake and Lake Springfield draw anglers and boaters. As a designated State Fish Preserve, Sangchris Lake is regularly stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, flathead catfish, and carp and hosts fishing tournaments for children and adults. Over 20 miles of scenic trails serve hikers and horseback riders, and a public archery range is open to novices.
Route 66 attractions, the Illinois State Fairgrounds, and the pools and mini golf at private parks round out the family agenda.

The prime camping window in central Illinois runs from April into October, when weather is warm and the full slate of park services is running. At Sangchris Lake State Park, camping and cabin reservations at Hickory Point and Deer Run are handled through ExploreMoreIL for the April 1 through October 31 reservation season, and Hickory Point remains open all year while Deer Run closes the second week in January through March 31.
Shoulder-season campers should plan around utility shutoffs. Water facilities, including the shower building at Hickory Point, are closed from the Monday prior to Thanksgiving through March 31, so late fall and winter stays are dry camping only.
Summer weekends around holidays and the Illinois State Fair in August draw heavy demand at private parks near Springfield. Year-round options exist for cold-weather stays: Double J Campground is open all year, with about 25 full-hookup sites kept in service during winter, big rigs welcome, and easy access to I-55. How to book near Athens
State park sites use Illinois' central reservation system. Camping and cabin reservations at Sangchris Lake State Park can be made online at camp.exploremoreil.com or by phone with a credit card for the April 1 through October 31 reservation period. Lakefront and electric sites go quickly for summer weekends, so book several weeks out.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Springfield KOA books through the KOA website or app, with RV check-in at 2pm and check-out at noon, and cabin check-in at 3pm. Double J takes reservations by phone or through its website. Evening Star Camping Resort and Camp A While ask guests to contact the office directly.
For holiday weekends and the Illinois State Fair, reserve as far in advance as possible; some private parks require multi-night minimums during peak events.
