Campgrounds near Avon, Illinois
Avon sits in Fulton County in west-central Illinois, within reach of state parks along the Mississippi River corridor and the wooded hills near Macomb. RV travelers typically base out of the area to reach public campgrounds run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and a handful of private RV parks in the surrounding farmland.
The closest full-service public option is Argyle Lake State Park, a fisherman's park about 7 miles from Macomb that offers picnicking, camping, hiking and boating in a scenic, natural setting. Twisted Oaks - Argyle Lake State Park is the campground area inside the park, drawing anglers, hikers and weekend campers from across the region.
Farther northwest along the Mississippi, Delabar State Park sits about a mile and a half north of Oquawka near Illinois Route 164 and offers outdoor experiences for anglers, hikers, campers and picnickers. Private options in the surrounding area include Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club, Shady Lakes RV Resort, and Haven Hills Campground & Resort, each catering to RV travelers with hookups and family amenities.
Things to do near Avon
Fishing and paddling dominate the outdoor calendar. Argyle Lake is a 93-acre lake stocked with bluegill, redear, catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, tiger muskie and rainbow trout, and a 10 horsepower motor limit is enforced, with larger motors restricted to no-wake speeds. A public boat launch and docks are available. At Delabar, a boat ramp on the south end provides access to the Mississippi River for channel cat, bass, bluegill and crappie.
Hikers have options at both parks. Argyle Lake offers about 5 miles of rugged foot trails winding through an oak and hickory forest, with grades that get steep in places. Delabar has roughly 2 miles of trails suited to hikers and wildlife watchers. Birding is strong region-wide, with more than 200 species logged at Argyle Lake.

West-central Illinois has four distinct seasons. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window, with the busiest weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Sites at Argyle Lake fill quickly on summer weekends and around the fall trout release, when anglers travel in from across the state.
Spring brings green-up, wildflowers and rising river levels along the Mississippi, which can affect boat ramp access at Delabar. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects and ticks are common along wooded trails, so campers should check themselves and pets after walks.
Fall is prime time for cooler nights, foliage and fishing. RV camping at Delabar is offered year-round, so trailers can visit any time of the year, though winter services are limited and water systems at most Illinois state park campgrounds are shut off in freezing weather. Confirm hookup availability with the site office before arriving in the off-season.
How to book a campsite
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Argyle Lake and Delabar, use the state's ExploreMoreIL online reservation system operated for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Campsites can be booked up to about 180 days in advance and must be reserved at least three days before arrival, with a maximum stay of 14 nights within a 30-day period. Popular holiday weekends may require a two- or three-night minimum stay. A limited number of sites are often held first-come, first-served.
At Delabar, camper check-in runs through the site office, and campers must obtain a permit from park staff before setting up. Groups of 25 or more are required to register in advance with the site office. Private parks such as Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club, Shady Lakes RV Resort, and Haven Hills Campground & Resort book directly through their own offices or websites.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites in this part of Illinois lean rustic. At Argyle Lake, expect wooded loops with mature shade and a mix of site types suitable for trailers and motorhomes, including electric and non-electric options. Trails inside the park are physically demanding in places, with steep grades, so plan foot routes with kids in mind.
At Delabar, roughly 50 tent and trailer sites are spread out and wooded, with 30 amp electrical hookups, a water filling station and a dump station. Cell coverage can be spotty. The park sits close to the Mississippi, but the river is not visible from every campsite.
Pack for insects, bring drinking water for backup, and confirm dump station access at check-in. Nearby Oquawka and Macomb cover groceries, fuel and propane refills.
