Water dominates the itinerary. The Chain O'Lakes system links several natural lakes and the Fox River, supporting motorboating, kayaking, and fishing for bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, catfish, and yellow and white bass. On land, Chain O'Lakes State Park features seven picnic areas, roughly 6 miles of hiking and biking trails, and 8 miles of equestrian trail. The prime RV window runs from late May through early October. Summer weekends around the Chain O'Lakes and Illinois Beach fill quickly, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) are the tightest of the year. Booking several weeks ahead is standard for state park sites, and private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort see repeat-visitor holds on peak weekends. Spring brings cool nights, higher water levels, and active fishing, but insects and ticks pick up quickly once trees leaf out. The Illinois Beach campground opens April 1 and closes November 15, while reservations at that park are only accepted from May 1 through September 30. Fall offers milder days, thinner crowds, and color through the oak-hickory woodlands. Winter is a limited season. The Illinois Beach campground is closed January through March, and most Illinois state park loops in the region stop taking reservations after October 31, though day use continues. Ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are offered at Chain O'Lakes State Park in the fall and winter months when conditions permit.

Campgrounds in the Bannockburn corridor range from basic state park loops to full-hookup private resorts. At Chain O'Lakes State Park, expect Class A-Premium electric sites at Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den with flush toilets and shower houses, and Class B-Premium non-electric sites at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East with water and vault toilets.
