Camping near Barrington, Illinois
Barrington sits in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, roughly 40 miles from downtown and within an hour's drive of the Chain O'Lakes region straddling the Illinois-Wisconsin border. The village itself is residential, so most RV camping happens north and west, around the Fox River, the interconnected lakes of Lake County, and the Kenosha County line just across the state border.
The closest options for renters cluster around this water corridor. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park sit on natural lakes with boat access, while Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park provides a state-park base with hiking and paddling on site. Fox River Recreation offers river-adjacent camping farther south, and the Kenosha County Fair Association grounds add a fairground option a short drive north into Wisconsin.
Most sites in the area cater to families and weekend traffic from Chicago, so weekends book earlier than midweek stays.
Things to do around Barrington
Water recreation drives most trips. Chain O' Lakes State Park borders three natural lakes (Grass, Marie, and Nippersink) and the Fox River that connects the other seven lakes of the Chain, and the park contains a 44-acre lake within its boundaries, Turner Lake. Picnic areas, hiking, biking, birdwatching, and an archery range round out the on-site options, and boat, canoe, and kayak rentals are available seasonally through the park concessionaire.
Fishing is a common draw at Turner Lake, and there are no horsepower limitations on boats using the Chain O' Lakes, but electric trolling motors only are allowed on Turner Lake. Grass Lake Marina supports powerboating and pontoon days on the Chain.
Back in Barrington, families use the village for groceries, restaurants, and forest preserves managed by Lake and Cook counties. Downtown Chicago and its museums are reachable by Metra rail for a day trip that skips highway traffic.

The core camping season runs from late April through mid-October, matching the schedule of the Chain O' Lakes State Park concession stand. The park's concession stand is open April through mid-October and offers food, ice, firewood, soft drinks, ice cream, fishing equipment and baits, and camper supplies. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends are the busiest stretches, and state-park Class A-Premium sites cost more on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends.
Spring brings variable weather and higher water on the Fox River; expect wet ground into May. Summer is warm and humid with the heaviest rainfall concentrated in June, making shaded, well-drained sites worth prioritizing. Early fall is often the most comfortable window for RVs, with cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and open water still available for boating.
Winter camping options are limited around the Chain O' Lakes region, with hunting, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing taking over as private resorts close their RV loops until spring.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

Bogdan is an incredible host. He patiently explained everything about the RV, was reachable and helpful when I needed some advice. Camper is well kept and is a labor of love. We really enjoyed the experience.

How to book
Reservations for Turner Lake Campground can be made through the ExploreMoreIL.com website. A non-refundable reservation fee is required. Maximum stay for campsites is 14 nights in a 30 day period. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so booking several weeks ahead is the safer approach.
Private campgrounds set their own rules. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Fox River Recreation take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, with seasonal and holiday minimums common. Kenosha County Fair Association campground availability can be affected by fair week and other events on the fairgrounds, so it is worth confirming dates before locking in an RV rental.
What to expect
Sites in this area range from full-hookup RV resorts on private lakes to more basic state-park loops. At Chain O' Lakes, Class A-Premium areas (Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den) have 151 electric sites, while three Class B-Premium areas (Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East) offer 87 more primitive sites. Restrooms with showers exist in the developed loops, and pit toilets serve the primitive sections.
Roads into the Chain O' Lakes region are paved but narrow in spots, and some private resorts have tight interior turns; larger Class A rentals should confirm site length before arrival. All campers must bring their own firewood, and no one is allowed to pick up wood in the park.
Expect mosquitoes and other biting insects near the lakes in summer, and pack for humid nights.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Barrington, IL
How much does an RV rental in Barrington, IL typically cost?
RV rental in Barrington is more affordable than many travelers expect, with nightly rates on RVezy generally ranging from about $90 to $175 for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. Weekly bookings and shoulder-season trips (April, May, September, October) often unlock the best deals, and many Barrington hosts offer discounted weekly or monthly rates right on the listing. For a cheap RV rental in Barrington that still feels like a vacation, filter by travel trailers under $150 a night and look for hosts who include extras like generators or camping chairs. Pro tip: booking 6 to 8 weeks before a summer weekend usually beats last-minute pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Barrington%2C%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Barrington, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs on RVezy, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Barrington. Illinois licenses by weight, and a standard Class D license covers any RV with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 16,000 pounds or less, which includes virtually every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome listed on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identity right inside the app. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set. Most first-time renters in Barrington are surprised how quickly the paperwork wraps up.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlWhat kind of protection is included with my Barrington RV rental?
Every motorhome rental in Barrington booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the option that fits your comfort zone. Coverage is provided through RVezy's protection program rather than a personal auto policy, but it offers meaningful financial protection while you're exploring the Fox River Valley or heading up to Wisconsin. Pro tip: if it's your first time renting an RV in Barrington, choose a higher-tier plan for extra peace of mind, then relax and enjoy the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Barrington RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy understands. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Barrington RV trip without worry. Beyond that window, refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits, and customer support is available before, during, and after every trip if a situation comes up. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for summer weekends at Chain O' Lakes, knowing flexibility is built into the process.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Barrington?
Absolutely, dogs are welcome on plenty of trips. A pet-friendly RV rental in Barrington is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see campervans and motorhomes ready to host your four-legged co-pilot. Many Barrington-area hosts allow pets with a small cleaning fee, and the area is loaded with dog-friendly trails like the Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington Hills and the Deer Grove Forest Preserve in nearby Palatine. Chain O' Lakes State Park also welcomes leashed pets at most campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, and bring a portable water bowl for those summer hikes.
fpdcc.com/places/locations/crabtree-nature-center/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Barrington?
Yes, and it's one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. RV delivery in Barrington is offered by many RVezy hosts, who will drive the motorhome or travel trailer right to your driveway, a local campground like Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin, or Chain O' Lakes State Park about 20 miles north. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees usually run by the mile, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who offer this, especially helpful if you're flying into O'Hare and don't want to drive a big rig through Chicago traffic.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlHow many miles can I drive on my Barrington RV rental?
You'll have plenty of room to roam. Most Barrington hosts on RVezy include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a longer Barrington RV trip. Additional miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.50 each, but you can also pre-purchase mileage packages at a discount during checkout. Popular drives from Barrington include Lake Geneva, WI (about 35 miles), Starved Rock State Park (90 miles), Galena (160 miles), Indiana Dunes National Park (90 miles), and the Wisconsin Dells (165 miles). Pro tip: estimate your route in advance and add a mileage bundle upfront, it's usually cheaper than paying per overage mile later.
rvezy.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Barrington, IL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Barrington include Chain O' Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (about 20 miles north, with hundreds of sites and premium Class A hookups), Camp Reinberg in Palatine (the closest forest preserve camping, just a few miles away), Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin (about 15 miles south with electric hookups along the Fox River), Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (great for families with a swim beach), and Blackwell Family Campground in Warrenville (about 30 miles southwest). Pro tip: Chain O' Lakes sites in the Honeysuckle Hollow loop include 50-amp electric, perfect for running the AC in July humidity, and reservations open up to six months in advance.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Barrington, IL in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Barrington, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s and crisp, colorful falls in September and October. June and early September are local insider picks: warm enough for the lakes, but without peak humidity. Spring (April to mid-May) brings wildflowers at Crabtree Nature Center but cooler nights in the 40s, so look for a rig with a furnace. Winter rentals are limited because most area campgrounds close from November to April. Pro tip: target the second weekend of September for fall color at Chain O' Lakes, the crowds thin out and the maples are stunning.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Barrington really doable?
Totally doable, and Barrington is one of the easier places to start. First time renting an RV? Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hooking up to water and power, dumping tanks, and using the generator. You can also ask questions through the RVezy messaging system before you book. The roads around Barrington (like Route 14 and Northwest Highway) are wide, mostly flat, and far less stressful than driving into downtown Chicago. If you're nervous, pick a Class B campervan or smaller Class C, or book delivery and skip driving entirely. Pro tip: do a short practice loop through the Barrington Hills back roads before your first highway drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Barrington RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-90, a dead battery at a Lake Geneva campground, or a generator that won't start at Chain O' Lakes, help is one phone call away. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick troubleshooting (many issues are simple fixes like a tripped GFCI or low propane). RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and fuse panel location during your walkthrough, it speeds up roadside calls if you need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Barrington RV rental on a road trip to Wisconsin or other states?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from Barrington is one of the best ways to explore the upper Midwest. Most RVezy hosts in the Barrington area allow interstate travel, and Wisconsin is right next door, just 35 miles to Lake Geneva, 75 miles to Milwaukee, or 165 miles to the Wisconsin Dells. You can also head to Indiana Dunes National Park (about 90 miles east) or Michigan's lakeshore (around 175 miles). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings, and Canada crossings depend on the host's insurance coverage, so confirm in advance. Pro tip: confirm interstate plans with your host during booking and ask about extra mileage packages for longer hauls.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Barrington?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches average 7 to 10 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often deliver 16 to 20 MPG. Illinois gas prices in the Chicago metro area tend to run noticeably higher than the national average due to layered state, county, and Cook County taxes. You'll often find cheaper fuel just outside the metro: stations in Crystal Lake and McHenry are usually lower than Barrington proper. Pro tip: fill up before heading into Wisconsin where prices are typically lower, and use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stop along Route 14.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=ILHow far ahead do I need to book a campground near Barrington?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. Illinois state park campgrounds, including Chain O' Lakes, take reservations through the ExploreMoreIL system up to six months in advance, and Friday and Saturday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill up fast, sometimes within hours of opening. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort and Paul Wolff Campground also book heavily for summer weekends, so aim to reserve 2 to 3 months ahead. Midweek stays and shoulder-season trips are far easier to snag last minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target Chain O' Lakes weekend, then book the moment reservations open.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Barrington?
Driving an RV in Barrington is genuinely manageable. The village sits in northwest Cook County with wide suburban roads, gentle terrain, and easy connections to I-90 and Route 14 heading northwest toward camping country. Where to be alert: downtown Barrington has a few low railroad underpasses (the Metra UP-NW line crosses through town), so always know your rig's height (most are 10 to 12 feet) and stick to truck-friendly routes. Avoid downtown Chicago entirely if you're not used to a big vehicle. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most RV trips run April through October. Pro tip: use the Garmin RV GPS or CoPilot RV app to auto-route around low bridges.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-road-conditions.htmlWhat hookups and amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Barrington?
Most campgrounds near Barrington offer solid RV amenities. Chain O' Lakes State Park's Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den loops have 50-amp electric Class A premium sites, while other loops offer non-electric Class B sites at lower nightly rates. Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin includes 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, and a dump station. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort typically have full hookups (electric, water, sewer) plus Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Most state campgrounds have potable water fill-ups near the entrance and a dump station on-site. Pro tip: pack a 30-to-50-amp adapter, a 25-foot drinking-water hose, and a sewer hose support to handle anything you encounter.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Barrington?
More than you'd expect. Barrington-area RVezy rentals typically include a queen or king bed, fold-out dinette and sofa beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with AC and furnace, and seatbelts for all passengers. Many also come with a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi varies, so check the listing or bring a hotspot. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps and RV type on RVezy to match your group size, and message the host to confirm whether bedding and kitchenware are included or available as add-ons.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Barrington hosts offer extras to make life easier. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), generators ($25 to $50 per night with fuel), bike racks, kayak racks, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a meet-up spot near Barrington, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage allowances vary by listing, so check each one for included miles and overage rates. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding package on your first campervan rental in Barrington, it turns the whole experience into a true plug-and-play vacation.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully online. When you book your RV rental in Illinois on RVezy, your card is charged for the rental total (rental rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) right through the secure platform, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released after dropoff assuming no damages, late returns, or extra cleaning. To avoid issues, do a full video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement says so. Pro tip: use a credit card with available headroom to keep your daily spend clear during the hold.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Barrington a good base for a family RV trip?
It's a fantastic launch pad for a family RV trip in Barrington. You're about 45 minutes from downtown Chicago museums, roughly 20 miles from Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, around 30 miles from the Volo Museum, and a quick drive from Crabtree Nature Center's hands-on kid programs. For overnights, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo has a swim beach, mini golf, and planned activities, while Chain O' Lakes State Park offers boating, fishing, and miles of bike trails. Many Barrington RVezy hosts list family-friendly rigs that sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen, it's a game-changer for s'mores nights at Honeysuckle Hollow.
