Campgrounds and RV parks near Braceville, IL

Kankakee River State Park anchors the outdoor lineup. The park covers about 4,000 acres along both sides of an 11-mile stretch of the river, with paddling, fishing, and a trail network that follows both banks. A paved and crushed-stone bike path runs along the river, and a shorter route along Rock Creek passes limestone canyons and a small waterfall. South of the river, a 12-mile equestrian trail runs through the wildlife management area from early spring through October, with an equestrian campground available during the same window. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are permitted in winter when snow cover is adequate. Off-park attractions include Chicagoland Speedway for NASCAR events, the Joliet Area Historical Museum, the I and M Canal towpath for family biking, and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie for open-country hikes.

Camping season at state-run sites is concentrated from spring through fall. Potowatomi Campground at Kankakee River State Park is typically open from April through October, with reservations available up to six months in advance and weekends filling early during the summer months. Private parks such as Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort generally focus their main season from mid-April to mid-October and require guests to be at least 21. Late spring brings the wettest stretch. May and June are among the wettest months of the year across northern Illinois, and river levels on the Kankakee can rise quickly after storms. July and August deliver the warmest, most humid weather and the busiest campgrounds. September and October are usually drier and cooler, with strong fall color along the river bluffs. Winter access is limited. Most private RV parks scale back or close, though the state park stays open for day use, snowmobiling when snow cover is sufficient, and cross-country skiing.

Expect a mix of wooded state park sites and open, level private-park sites. Potowatomi's four loops provide 110 Class A sites with electric hookups, hot showers, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and water taps. Sites there generally fit RVs up to about 35 feet, so measure before booking. Chippewa Campground, also at the state park, is more primitive, with a mix of electric-only and no-hookup sites and no showers. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort offers pull-through pads, 30 and 50 amp service, water, laundry, and a shuttle to the casino, but individual sites do not have sewer hookups, so plan to use the on-property dump station on the way out. Alcohol is prohibited in Kankakee River State Park and its campgrounds, quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and pets are allowed on leash.
