Campgrounds near Braidwood
Braidwood sits in southern Will County, Illinois, about 53 miles southwest of Chicago and 18 miles south of Joliet. The area works well as a base for RV travelers headed to the Kankakee River corridor, the Chicagoland motorsports complex, and the string of state fish and wildlife areas along the Illinois and Kankakee rivers.
Campground options nearby cover several distinct styles. Leisure Lake Membership Resort caters to members with lake-oriented sites, while Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort in Joliet pairs an RV park with casino access. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds serves race-weekend traffic, and Martin Campground offers a straightforward private option closer to town.
For a more traditional state-park experience, Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park lies a short drive southeast and sits along the Kankakee River in a wooded setting. Together these options give RV travelers a spread of choices, from private parks with hookups to Class A electric sites managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Things to do near Braidwood
The Kankakee River is the main outdoor draw. Anglers target bass, catfish, walleye, and northern pike, and the shallow current at Kankakee River State Park is popular with canoeists and kayakers. The park spans about 4,000 acres along an 11-mile stretch of the river, with hiking, biking, and equestrian trails on opposite sides of the water, and Rock Creek Canyon adds cliff scenery and a small waterfall to the mix.
Motorsports fans have Route 66 Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway just north of Braidwood. In Joliet, the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Rialto Square Theatre, and Hollywood Casino provide indoor options for rainy days. Families often add a day trip to Starved Rock State Park farther west for canyon hiking and waterfalls.

Camping season in this part of northern Illinois runs roughly mid-April through October. Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park and the park's other campgrounds are reservable through the state ExploreMoreIL system, and the equestrian campground at Kankakee River State Park is open April 1 through October 31. Private parks such as Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort operate on a similar warm-season window.
Late spring brings the wettest weather, with May often the rainiest month and higher river levels that affect paddling conditions. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and holiday weekends fill state park loops quickly. Early fall generally offers the most stable weather for RV travel, with cooler nights and lighter crowds.
Winter closes most private and state campgrounds in the area. Snow typically falls between December and March, and quiet-hour and no-vehicular-traffic rules at Illinois state park campgrounds apply whenever sites are open.

How to book campgrounds near Braidwood
State park sites at Kankakee River State Park are reserved through the Illinois DNR ExploreMoreIL platform. Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park offers 110 Class A sites with electric hookups, showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Same-day and day-before bookings are generally not accepted online, so late arrivals rely on walk-in availability, and credit cards are not accepted for on-site payment at the park.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort takes reservations through its front desk or online booking portal. Leisure Lake Membership Resort is primarily a members-only club, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds sells sites tied to race weekends. For summer weekends and race dates, book eight or more weeks out.
What to expect
Expect a mix of hookup levels. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort provides sites with water and 30- and 50-amp electric, along with laundry, restrooms, and showers, and offers guest access to the casino property. Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park provides Class A sites with electricity, picnic tables, camp grills, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station rather than full hookups at each site, and it accommodates RVs roughly 35 feet and under.
Quiet hours at Illinois state park campgrounds run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with no vehicular traffic during that window. Alcohol is not permitted at Kankakee River State Park. Cell coverage is generally solid across the Braidwood, Joliet, and Kankakee corridor, and grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are easy to reach from I-55, I-80, and I-57.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Braidwood, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Braidwood, IL?
RV rental in Braidwood is one of the more affordable ways to explore northeastern Illinois and Route 66. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs run from $250 and up. Because Braidwood sits in a less competitive market than nearby Chicago, you can often find a cheap RV rental in Braidwood compared to big-city pickup locations just 60 miles north. To stretch your budget, book midweek stays in May or September, sort listings low-to-high using the price filter, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts on a longer Braidwood RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Braidwood,%20IllinoisDo I need a special driver's license to rent an RV in Braidwood?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need for almost every RV rental in Braidwood. Illinois waives Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements for any recreational vehicle used for personal travel, and federal rules back that up. Most rigs on RVezy fall under 16,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which keeps you firmly inside the standard Illinois Class D license category. You'll also need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license and you're set to hit Route 66 the same day you pick up.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers-license/cdl/cdl.htmlWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Braidwood?
Every RV rental in Braidwood booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull onto I-55 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout rather than the host setting it. That means you decide how much cushion you want for things like a stray gravel chip on the way to Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area or a minor scrape at a tight campground site. Review the coverage tiers carefully when booking, especially if it is your first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Braidwood trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not the individual host. That means every motorhome rental in Braidwood follows the same predictable framework, with clear timelines for refunds based on when you cancel relative to your trip start. Because the policy is handled centrally, you will not see a separate policy on each listing. If a host ever needs to cancel on their end, RVezy supports guests with refunds or travel credits. Book early to lock in the best Route 66 dates and rigs, knowing you have a clear, supported path if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Braidwood RV trip?
Yes, Braidwood is a fantastic launchpad for a pet-friendly RV rental in Braidwood. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings whose hosts welcome dogs, with cleaning expectations spelled out clearly. Once you are on the road, your pup will love the open grasslands at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie just north of town, where leashed dogs are allowed on designated trails, and the wide-open shorelines at Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area. Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size notes, then pack a long lead for the prairie.
fs.usda.gov/main/midewin/homeCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Braidwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Braidwood is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to driving a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts will deliver your rig straight to local spots like Tameling Campground and RV Park, the KOA in nearby Wilmington, or even a private driveway, then set up the awning, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter when searching and enter your destination. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 20 to 30 miles of the host keeps costs down. Pro tip: this is the gold-standard option for first-time RVers heading to Mazonia-Braidwood.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mazonia-braidwood.htmlHow far can I drive from Braidwood on a typical RV rental?
You can cover a lot of Midwest ground from Braidwood thanks to its position right on Interstate 55 and historic Route 66. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance, often 100 to 150 miles per day, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Braidwood include Starved Rock State Park (about 35 miles west), the Chicago lakefront (60 miles north), Springfield (130 miles south), Indiana Dunes National Park (90 miles east), and St. Louis along the full Route 66 corridor (240 miles southwest). Ask hosts about unlimited-mileage upgrades if you are planning the full Mother Road experience.
illinoisroute66.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Braidwood for RV camping?

Tameling Campground and RV Park sits just outside town with full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer) and stays open year-round. Lake Alexander RV Park offers a wooded, riverside vibe with seasonal stays April 15 to October 15. Fossil Rock Campground at the KOA Holiday in Wilmington (about 8 miles north) has a pool, mini-golf, and 265 full-hookup sites. For state-park lovers, Kankakee River State Park's Potawatomi Campground is roughly 25 miles southeast, and Channahon State Park sits 15 miles north along the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Pro tip: book Kankakee River sites through ExploreMoreIL well in advance for summer weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.kankakeeriver.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Braidwood, IL?
Late May through early October is prime season for an RV rental Illinois adventure based out of Braidwood. Summer temperatures usually run from the mid-70s to upper-80s Fahrenheit, with July highs occasionally pushing into the low 90s. Spring (April to mid-May) and fall (mid-September to late October) bring 50 to 70 degree days, fewer mosquitos, and gorgeous prairie colors at Midewin. Winters here are cold, often in the 20s and 30s with snow, though a few hosts list winterized rigs with heated tanks for a quiet, off-season Braidwood RV trip. October weekends along Route 66 are especially memorable, with classic-car cruises and harvest festivals throughout the corridor.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Braidwood?
You'll do great, and Braidwood is genuinely one of the easier places to learn. The roads around town are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to Chicago, with Route 53, I-55, and historic Route 66 offering straightforward driving. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, slide-outs, water systems, generator, and dump procedures, so you're never tossed the keys cold. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer to start, and ask about delivery so you skip the highway drive entirely. Pro tip: practice a few parking-lot loops at the Braidwood Walmart before heading out.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2261What happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on I-55, a dead battery at Mazonia-Braidwood, or a stuck slide-out at your campsite, help is one phone call away. The roadside number is in your booking confirmation. For non-emergency questions, like switching the water heater from electric to propane, message your host directly through the RVezy app, and most respond within minutes. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Snap a photo of the roadside number on your phone before pulling out of the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Braidwood RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy bookings, which is great news since Braidwood is perfectly placed for an RV road trip into Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, or Iowa. Popular cross-state trips include Indiana Dunes National Park (about 90 miles), Wisconsin Dells (180 miles), and the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri (300 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so confirm via message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. The entire Illinois Route 66 corridor from Chicago to St. Louis makes for an unforgettable multi-state itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Realistic fuel budgeting is easy once you know the numbers. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 MPG combined. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with regular unleaded recently hovering around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon in the Braidwood area, and diesel a touch higher. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Love's Travel Stop near I-55 Exit 236, which is RV-friendly with high-flow pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Braidwood?
For a smooth Braidwood RV trip, book your campsites as soon as you lock in dates. Illinois state park campgrounds, including Kankakee River State Park and Channahon State Park, accept reservations through the ExploreMoreIL reservation system, and summer weekends fill quickly after they open. Private parks like Tameling Campground and the Fossil Rock KOA Holiday in Wilmington typically accept bookings many months out and sell out for July 4th and Labor Day weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Set a calendar reminder for the state-park booking window and grab waterfront sites the morning they release.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Braidwood?
Driving around Braidwood is refreshingly straightforward. The terrain is flat farmland with wide rural roads, generous shoulders, and a posted Illinois highway limit of 70 mph on I-55. Watch for two specific things: summer thunderstorms can bring sudden crosswinds across the open prairie around Mazonia-Braidwood, and winter (December through February) can mean snow, ice, and reduced visibility. Avoid driving large rigs into downtown Chicago, where low clearances under the Loop and tight residential streets are tough on big motorhomes. Stick to I-55, I-80, and I-355 if you do head north. Pro tip: check IDOT's Getting Around Illinois site the morning of any long drive for live road and weather alerts.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/index.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Braidwood?
Most campgrounds near Braidwood are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Tameling Campground offers full hookups with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer at the site. KOA Holiday in Wilmington has 265 full-hookup sites, a pool, laundry, Wi-Fi, and an on-site store. State park campgrounds at Kankakee River and Channahon typically provide electric hookups, potable water fill stations, vault or flush toilets, and centralized dump stations rather than at-site sewer. For dumping mid-trip, the Love's Travel Stop at I-55 Exit 236 and many local KOAs offer dump and freshwater fill access. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 50-to-30 amp adapter so you're ready at any site.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.kankakeeriver.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Braidwood?
RVs in the Braidwood area come surprisingly well-stocked for a comfortable trip. Expect sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on size, a kitchen with a fridge, stovetop, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, and climate control with both air conditioning and propane furnace. Most Class B and C motorhomes include factory seatbelts for travel, and many hosts add a generator, TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and even Starlink or mobile Wi-Fi for streaming at Mazonia-Braidwood. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are commonly included or offered as inexpensive add-ons. Pro tip: read the listing's amenity list closely and message the host to confirm anything specific, like a coffee maker or pack-n-play, before you book.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Braidwood area offer a smart menu of add-ons that make trip planning easier. Common extras include linen and kitchen packages ($25 to $75), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), bike racks, kayak carriers, portable grills, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Mileage policies vary by host but typically include 100 to 150 miles per day, with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.50 each, and unlimited-mileage upgrades available on request. Pickup is usually at the host's home, with delivery to Tameling Campground, KOA Wilmington, or Mazonia-Braidwood available for an additional fee. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first trip so all you bring is groceries.
illinoisroute66.org/braidwood-il/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is handled entirely through the RVezy platform, which keeps things simple and secure. You pay your rental total at checkout using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is also placed as a hold on your card before the trip starts, separate from the booking payment. Amounts vary by RV class and value. After your trip wraps up and the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, the hold is released. Do a quick photo walk-around at pickup and dropoff to keep your Braidwood RV trip deposit return smooth.
