Campgrounds and RV parks near Cerro Gordo, IL

Water recreation drives most trips. Clinton Lake supports motorboating, water skiing, and swimming at a park beach, plus bank and boat fishing for crappie, catfish, bass, and other species. Lake Shelbyville, reached from Eagle Creek State Recreational Area, spans 11,100 acres with 250 miles of shoreline for water skiing, pontoon cruising, and windsurfing. On shore, Weldon Springs State Recreational Area maintains several trails, including the Salt Creek Backpack Trail and the roughly three-mile Old Farm Trail, which links the campground to the north end of the park. A 29-acre spring-fed lake at Weldon Springs is open to bank fishing and boats with electric motors only. Springfield's Lincoln sites and downtown Decatur are both within a short drive for a rainy-day pivot.

Peak RV season runs May through September. Illinois state park shower buildings at Clinton Lake and Weldon Springs generally reopen around May 1 and close by November 1, with weather-driven adjustments on either end. Clinton Lake's showers and potable water are available from mid-April through November when weather permits. Eagle Creek's 75 Class A reservable sites open for booking through ExploreMoreIL for the April 1 through October 31 season, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill fastest. Spring brings the wettest weather and the risk of flooding along Salt Creek, which can close primitive backpack sites at Weldon Springs. Summer is hot and humid with the busiest boat traffic on Clinton Lake and Lake Shelbyville. Early fall offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fishing. Winter camping is possible at Clinton Lake and Weldon Springs, both of which stay open year-round, but Clinton Lake's Mascoutin area closes for the full week before the first firearm deer season for a special hunt. Ice fishing and cross-country skiing are options once the showers winterize.

Most sites in the area are gravel pads under mature tree cover, with a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area has 17 Class AA sites with electric, water, and sewer, 277 Class A electric sites, 9 Class B/S sites, and 5 Class C walk-in tent sites, along with a dump station, showers, and a swim beach. Camping loops H, I, J, and K are alcohol-free. Weldon Springs offers 75 Class A electric sites with 30 or 50-amp service, a dump station, shower building, pit toilets, water hydrants, and a maximum RV length around 60 feet. Eagle Creek has 75 reservable Class A sites with electricity, plus additional non-reservable Class B/S and Class D sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable across central Illinois. Mosquitoes are common near lake shorelines in summer, and raccoons can be persistent in tent areas, so store food inside the RV.
