Camping near Chatham, Illinois
Chatham sits just south of Springfield in central Illinois, placing renters within a short drive of state park camping, private RV parks, and the capital's Lincoln historic sites. The village is off Interstate 55, which keeps access straightforward for rigs coming from Chicago, St. Louis, or Indianapolis.
The closest full-service private options include Double J Campground and RV Park and Kamper Kompanion RV Park, both convenient bases for exploring Springfield without staying in the city itself. Springfield KOA Journey sits on the east side of the metro and rounds out the private-park choices with typical KOA amenities and pull-through sites.
For a lake setting, Sangchris Lake State Park lies southeast of Chatham. Hickory Point - Sangchris Lake State Park is one of two campgrounds inside the park, giving RV renters access to shoreline sites, fishing, and boat ramps. Country Bend Campground adds another rural option in the surrounding farm country. Together these choices cover most trip styles: quick overnight stops off the interstate, weeklong family lake stays, and history-focused visits to downtown Springfield.
Things to do around Chatham
Springfield's Lincoln sites anchor most itineraries. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, and Lincoln's Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery are all within a short drive of Chatham and work well as a full day out for families.
Outdoor time centers on water. Sangchris Lake offers bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish fishing, with boat access from the eastern and western shores. A public archery range and a seasonal dog training area are also available inside the park. Lake Springfield, closer to town, adds sailing, paddling, and shoreline picnic areas.
On rainy days, renters can head to the Illinois State Museum, the Dana-Thomas House (a Frank Lloyd Wright design), or the shops and restaurants along Old Route 66, which runs right through the area.

Central Illinois has four distinct seasons, and the camping calendar at Sangchris Lake reflects that. Deer Run Campground closes from the second week of January through March 31, while Hickory Point remains open year-round, though water facilities and the shower building at Hickory Point are closed from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31. Winter trips generally route to private parks that stay open year-round.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RVing. Days are mild, bugs are manageable, and lake sites are easier to book. Late spring can bring thunderstorms and the occasional tornado watch, which is standard for the region. Summer is peak season for families: warm lake water, long daylight, and full campground programming, but also higher humidity and heavier weekend demand.
Fall delivers cool nights, fewer crowds, and color through the oak-hickory woodlands around Sangchris Lake. Illinois DNR reservations at Sangchris are accepted for the period of April 1 through October 31, so trips outside that window rely on private campgrounds and any first-come sites still open.
How to book
State park sites in Illinois use a single reservation portal. Camping and cabin reservations at Sangchris Lake are made through ExploreMoreIL, the Illinois DNR system, either online or by phone, for the period of April 1 through October 31. Hickory Point Campground contains 54 Class A sites, 8 Class C sites, and 2 primitive cabins, with reservations accepted for the cabins and 46 of the Class A sites. The remaining sites are first-come, first-served.
Private parks such as Double J Campground and RV Park, Springfield KOA Journey, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Country Bend Campground book directly through the campground or their own websites. For summer weekends and any date overlapping the Illinois State Fair in mid-August, book as early as possible, since Springfield-area sites fill quickly during fair week.
What to expect on arrival
Sangchris Lake sites lean rustic. Deer Run Campground has Class A sites with electricity, showers, and vehicle access, plus Class B/S sites and walk-in Class C tent sites. A sanitary dump station is provided in each campground, and the main shower building is located in Hickory Point Campground. Cell coverage around the lake is generally usable but varies by carrier and site.
Private parks in the Chatham and Springfield area typically offer full hookups, pull-through sites for larger rigs, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Roads into all listed campgrounds are paved or well-maintained gravel and handle standard Class A, Class C, and travel trailer rentals without issue. Pets are allowed at Sangchris Lake and at most private parks, on leash.

weather.gov/ilx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Chatham?
You'll do great. First time renting an RV in Chatham is genuinely easy because the terrain is flat, traffic is light, and your host hands you the keys only after a full walkthrough. They'll show you how to operate the slide-outs, awning, water system, generator, propane, and dump valves, and they're a text away during your entire trip. RVezy's customer support and 24/7 roadside assistance (included with your protection plan) are there as a safety net. Pro tip: do a short shakedown drive on Route 4 or a loop around Lake Springfield before heading farther out, it's a stress-free way to get comfortable with the rig's height, mirrors, and turning radius.

Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your tow vehicle's MPG noticeably. Illinois gas prices generally run a bit above the national average, and you'll find some of the lowest pump prices at stations just off I-55 in Chatham and Glenarm. Pro tip: download GasBuddy before you leave, and fill up in central Illinois rather than at interstate exits closer to Chicago, where prices spike significantly.

Watch for occasional spring thunderstorms, summer heat that can stress tires, and the rare winter ice event from December through February. Pro tip: avoid downtown Springfield streets near the Capitol with taller Class A rigs (some have 11-foot underpasses noted in old viaducts), and stick to Veterans Parkway or I-55 business loop for clearance peace of mind.
