Campgrounds and RV parks near Chebanse, IL

Kankakee River State Park is the main draw. The park covers roughly 4,000 acres along an 11-mile stretch of the Kankakee River, with paddling, fishing, and a 3-mile route along Rock Creek that takes in limestone canyons and a waterfall. A bicycle path begins at the Davis Creek Area and travels 10.5 miles along the river, looping in the west end of the park. Canoe rentals operate near the park, and the shallow, rock-strewn river is generally beginner-friendly. A 12-mile equestrian trail runs along the south side of the river in the wildlife management area and is open April 1 through October 31. Off-park attractions in nearby Kankakee and Bourbonnais include riverside parks, the Kankakee County Museum, and two Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie-style houses in Kankakee that are open for tours.

The main camping season at Kankakee River State Park runs April through October, with reservations available up to six months in advance through the Illinois DNR system. Potowatomi and the other reservable loops fill quickly on summer weekends and around holidays, so peak-season trips should be booked well ahead. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends carry a two-night minimum stay. Summers are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Spring brings variable weather and higher river flows that favor paddling, while fall delivers cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and color along the wooded loops through October. Winters are cold and often snowy. Most private campgrounds and state park amenity buildings scale back or close, though the state park itself stays open for day use and hosts snowmobiling on the south side of the river once snow cover reaches four inches, after hunting season ends in mid-January.

Potowatomi at Kankakee River State Park is a Class A campground with 110 sites offering electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings with grills, hot showers, a dump station, and water taps. Sites accommodate RVs up to about 35 feet, and lengths vary across the Osage, Hickory, Oak, and Davis Creek loops, so match your rig to the site before booking. The park does not accept credit cards on site, prohibits alcohol, and enforces a firewood quarantine due to Emerald Ash Borer. Kankakee South KOA Holiday offers full-hookup RV sites, including 50-amp pull-throughs, along with tent sites, cabins, a seasonal pool, playground, and a game room. Pets are welcome across site types. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the state park, with no vehicle traffic during that window.
