Chrisman camping overview
Chrisman sits in Edgar County in east-central Illinois, close to the Indiana border and within an hour of several state-managed campgrounds. RV travelers typically base out of the small towns along US-36 and US-150 and then drive to public parks that offer electric sites, boat access, and trail networks. The terrain here is a mix of farm country, oak-hickory woodland, and reclaimed mine land, and most nearby camping is oriented around a lake or river.
The closest private option is Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground, suited to travelers who want hookups without a long drive. West of Chrisman, Kickapoo State Recreation Area occupies 2,842 acres in Vermilion County, easily reached via I-74, and includes Redear Campground. Walnut Point State Park, established in 1968 and managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, features a 59 acre artificial lake and offers camping at loops including Gray Squirrel.
Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian adds a horse camp for equestrian travelers, and Mill Creek Park in Clark County rounds out the options to the south.
Things to do near Chrisman
Water-based recreation is the main draw. Kickapoo's twenty-two deep-water ponds provide 221 acres of water for boaters, canoeists, and anglers, and the park offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and hunting. Annual fall and spring stockings of rainbow trout provide an unusual opportunity for central Illinois anglers to fish for catchable-size trout, and scuba diving is permitted in select ponds.
At Walnut Point, activity is quieter. Boating is limited to electric trolling motors, and swimming is not permitted. Fishing opportunities include largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie, with access provided by docks, piers, and boat launches.
Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian provides miles of bridle trails from its horse camp, and Mill Creek Park adds lake fishing south toward Marshall.

At Kickapoo, the shower buildings are closed by November 1 (may be earlier if bad weather) and reopen May 1 (may be earlier, weather depending). Water spigots, showers, and the dump station are winterized and closed from December 15th to March 31st depending on weather.
Summer is the peak family window, with warm lake days and full concession service. Fall brings hardwood color through the oak-hickory forests and cooler nights that suit RV travel, and October is a big weekend month at Kickapoo, which runs a Halloween celebration with food, activities, and trick or treating, with campers going all out decorating their sites.
Winter access remains possible at Kickapoo for self-contained rigs since walk-in sites are available to campers throughout the year and can be obtained from the campground host at the check station. Walnut Point supports limited winter use for cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions allow.
How to book a campsite near Chrisman
Most public campgrounds in this area are booked through the Illinois DNR's ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations for the main Kickapoo campground are available from May 1st to Oct 31st at ExploreMoreIL, and any camping outside of this timeframe will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations can be made at least 3 days in advance through the ExploreMoreIL site, and non-reserved sites are available upon arrival, though there is a 2-night maximum stay on these walk-ups.
Walnut Point State Park uses the same reservation system for its Gray Squirrel RV loop and its tent areas. For the Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian camp, confirm current rules with the site office before arrival, as horse-camp availability can differ from general campground policy.
Private parks such as Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground and county-run Mill Creek Park take reservations directly through their operators. Book summer holiday weekends well in advance.
What to expect at Chrisman campgrounds
Sites in this region skew practical rather than resort-style. Kickapoo has two major campgrounds for tent and trailer camping, with 184 sites. About half the sites have electrical hookups, two shower buildings are available to all campers and a sanitary dump station is available. Electrical hookups are available on sites 1-101, with both 30 and 50 amp service on selected sites, and centralized water spigots exist throughout the campground.
Walnut Point offers RV sites with electrical hookups and primitive walk-in tent sites, divided into Gray Squirrel and Fox Squirrel for RVs and Gray Tent and Fox Tent for tent camping. Facilities include clean restrooms, shower houses, and a dump station. Electric-only hookups are available, with no full hookups.
Expect quiet, wooded loops, mosquitoes near the lakes in midsummer, and gravel or paved pads suitable for larger rigs at the state parks.
