The core camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. At Kickapoo State Recreation Area, reservations for the main campground are available from May 1 to October 31 through ExploreMoreIL, and any camping outside of this timeframe is on a first-come, first-served basis. Fall weekends are heavily booked, especially the campground's annual Halloween weekend when campers decorate sites for trick-or-treating. Winter access is limited. Water is shut off in the colder months at Kickapoo, though electricity remains active and one shower building stays open for year-round camper use. Walk-in sites are available throughout the year. At Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area, hunting seasons draw activity through fall, and horse trails see the heaviest use in spring and fall. Municipal and private options run shorter shoulders. South Park Municipal Campground in Gibson City is open April through October, while Kankakee South KOA Holiday operates on a longer season with reduced amenities in the off-months.

Expect a mix of primitive public sites and full-service private parks. Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area is rustic: the RV sites are fairly primitive, Class C sites have no hookups whatsoever, and there is no access to showers. Kickapoo's main campground is more developed, with two shower buildings and a sanitary dump station for camper use, though there are no individual water hookups at sites; potable water is available at centralized spigots and the dump station. Stay limits apply statewide: the maximum length of stay is 14 days in a 30-day period, and all campground guests must check in with the campground host before entering the campground. South Park Municipal Campground offers 30-amp electric and water at each site with a seven-day stay limit. Kankakee South KOA Holiday delivers the full-service KOA experience. Cell service is generally reliable across the region, though pockets fade in the Vermilion River bottoms.
