Campgrounds near Coal City, Illinois
Coal City sits in Grundy County in northeastern Illinois, off Interstate 55 about an hour southwest of Chicago. The area gives RV renters a practical base for reaching the Illinois River corridor, the Kankakee River, and the Chicago metro without staying inside the city itself.
Campgrounds within a short drive cover a wide range. Leisure Lake Membership Resort and Martin Campground focus on private-park stays. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort in nearby Joliet pairs an RV park with casino, hotel, and dining access. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds sits next to the Joliet-area racetrack, which returns to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule after several dormant seasons. For a public-land option, Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park offers wooded electric sites along an eleven-mile stretch of river.
Most private parks in the area operate seasonally and lean toward RV travelers rather than tent campers, while the state park accepts a mix of tents and RVs.
Things to do near Coal City
Kankakee River State Park is the main outdoor draw. Its roughly 4,000 acres run along an eleven-mile stretch of the Kankakee River, with fishing, canoeing, hiking, and bicycling on a crushed-gravel trail that connects to the Potowatomi campground loops. Rock Creek adds cliffs, a waterfall, and short canyon hikes.
Closer to town, the Illinois and Michigan Canal corridor offers flat biking and towpath walking. Guests staying at Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort are within a few miles of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds puts race fans directly next to the track. Downtown Chicago is reachable as a day trip by car or by Metra rail from Joliet.
