Camping near Crete, Illinois
Crete sits in southern Will County, roughly 35 miles south of downtown Chicago and just west of the Indiana state line. The village is best known to campers as the closest town to Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve, a unit of the Forest Preserve District of Will County located in Crete Township. The surrounding area is flat farmland broken by wooded creek corridors, which shapes what campgrounds look like here: small, tree-shaded properties rather than large resort parks.
RV renters have a mix of private and public options within a short drive. Emerald Trails Campground, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park, Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park, Enchanted Shores, and Martin Campground are the closest full-service properties, most sitting a short drive from Crete on the Illinois or northwest Indiana side.
For tent-based or minimal-hookup nights, Goodenow Grove offers rustic sites inside the preserve itself. The camping area at Goodenow Grove has nine individual sites that also work well for large group trips. Each site can accommodate up to six four-person tents, two campsites are ADA accessible, and each has a picnic table and a fire ring.
Things to do around Crete
Goodenow Grove is the main outdoor draw within Crete Township. The preserve covers 898 acres and contains 4 miles of trails and a man-made 40-foot hill that serves as a sledding hill in winter. It is mostly woods with some prairie, moderately hilly with one small pond, and Plum Creek crosses the preserve. Nearby amenities include 2.30 miles of paved and natural-surface trails, the 3.17-mile crushed limestone Plum Creek Greenway Trail, and Plum Creek Nature Center.
Farther afield, Kankakee River State Park is the region's main paddling and fishing destination. Anglers target bass, channel cats, walleye, and northern pike, Rock Creek offers a good fishing spot, and canoeists like the river because it is shallow and gentle. Chicago's museums and Lake Michigan beaches are also reachable as day trips from a Crete base.

When to visit Crete
- spring
March - May
58° / 40°F 90 mmCool and wet; parks reopen, trails can be muddy.
- summer
June - August
83° / 63°F 101 mmPeak season; weekends book weeks out, thunderstorms common.
- fall
September - November
63° / 45°F 79 mmMild days, cool nights; strong color along Plum Creek.
- winter
December - February
34° / 22°F 52 mmCold and snowy; most private parks closed or reduced.
Northern Illinois has a strong four-season pattern, so timing matters more here than in milder parts of the country. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. May and June bring green foliage and manageable heat, July and August are the warmest and busiest stretch, and September into mid-October delivers cooler nights and fall color along Plum Creek and the Kankakee River.
Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day are peak. Kankakee River State Park is a well-known regional draw, its two campgrounds hold more than 200 sites, and reservations fill early because the park is popular. Booking six to eight weeks out for holiday weekends is realistic.
Winter camping is limited. Many private parks in the area close or run on a reduced season, and Goodenow Grove itself follows preserve hours. Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve is open 8 a.m. to sunset every day of the year except Christmas. Snow, ice, and single-digit lows are common from December through February.

Wonderful hosts. Extremely accommodating and great communication/support. RV was clean and well maintained. We took it out west to South Dakota, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (though would recommend some driving experience to navigate mountain passes). Wouldn't hesitate to rent this RV again! We never thought we would enjoy traveling in an RV as much as we did. Our family of 7 had a great time and made some wonderful memories.

How to book a site
Public and private campgrounds around Crete use different reservation systems, so plan by park. Illinois state park sites, including those at Kankakee River State Park, are handled through the state's online portal. Kankakee River State Park's campgrounds offer more than 200 sites, with reservations available online through ExploreMoreIL. Campers must be 18 to book a site and must set up camp when they obtain the permit, and credit cards are not accepted on site.
Will County Forest Preserve campgrounds, including Goodenow Grove, use the county's own permit process. Camping permits may be obtained online or in person at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon, Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Bolingbrook, Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township, or Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet.
Private parks such as Emerald Trails Campground, Martin Campground, and Enchanted Shores are booked directly with the property by phone or website.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this corridor lean small and shaded rather than open and resort-style. Private parks around Crete often mix seasonal residents with short-term RV renters, so expect neighborhoods of long-term rigs alongside transient loops. Full hookups are common at the private parks; hookups are not available at forest-preserve sites.
Expect basic amenities at public campgrounds. Kankakee River State Park's Chippewa Campground offers Class B sites with electricity and Class C sites without, while Potawatomi Campground is Class A with showers, a dump station, and electricity across 110 wooded sites. At Goodenow Grove, each campsite can accommodate up to six tents and includes a fire pit and picnic table, an accessible latrine and a water fountain are nearby, and no electrical hookup is available.
Cell service across the area is generally reliable given proximity to Chicago, and terrain is flat, so towing and leveling are straightforward for first-time RV renters.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Crete, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Crete, IL?
An RV rental in Crete, IL is one of the more affordable ways to vacation near Chicago, with most peer-to-peer rentals on RVezy ranging from about $95 to $250 per night depending on the rig. Travel trailers and pop-ups sit at the low end, while Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels run higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Crete, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of May or September, and use the price filter on RVezy to sort listings. Many hosts also bundle linens, camp chairs, and outdoor gear into the nightly rate, which saves a stop at the store before you head to Indiana Dunes or Kankakee River State Park. Booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead of summer weekends locks in the best inventory and pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crete,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Crete, Illinois?
Good news: a regular Illinois driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Crete, IL. Illinois does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV-specific endorsement for any motorhome or trailer available on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels. Renters generally need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and you will confirm your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from out of country? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the paperwork is, leaving more time to plan stops at Goodenow Grove or the Indiana Dunes.

Booking an RV rental in Crete, Illinois is lower risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period after booking that lets you change your mind within the first window. Beyond that, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and which cancellation tier the host has selected (Flexible, Moderate, or Strict). If a host cancels your trip, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. The exact policy details are explained on the RVezy Help Center, so you will know exactly where you stand before you click Book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Crete RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Crete is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many Crete-area hosts even leave bowls, towels, and a backyard-style leash setup in the rig. Once you're on the road, you've got great options for furry travelers: Emerald Trails Campground right in Crete is dog-friendly with shaded sites and walking lanes, and Goodenow Grove Forest Preserve allows leashed dogs on its trails. Indiana Dunes State Park also permits leashed pets on most trails and beaches outside the swimming area. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed notes.
reconnectwithnature.org/preserves-trails/big-4/goodenow-grove/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in Crete?
Yes, RV delivery in Crete is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you have never towed before. Many local hosts offer to drive the motorhome or trailer directly to your driveway, a nearby campground, or even out to Indiana Dunes State Park about 45 minutes away. They will level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check each listing for the delivery radius and per-mile fee. It is the simplest way to enjoy RV camping in Crete without ever getting behind a big wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039386093-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive on a Crete RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
Plenty of road awaits when you rent an RV in Crete, IL. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you will often see options ranging from around 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings. The included allowance is plenty for most regional trips: Indiana Dunes National Park is about 45 miles east, Starved Rock State Park is roughly 90 miles west, downtown Chicago is around 30 miles north, Lake Geneva, WI is around 90 miles, and Springfield is about 220 miles. If you are planning a longer Crete RV trip, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host before booking to request a higher cap. Overage fees typically run $0.25 to $0.45 per mile when listed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106074-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere can I camp near Crete, IL with my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Crete. Just over the border, Lake Sauzer's Kamper's Korner in Dyer, IN offers full hookups. Windy City Beach & Camping in nearby Beecher has a swimming pond and family vibe, while Kankakee River State Park (about 30 miles south) offers riverside Class A and B electric sites with hiking and paddling. For a bigger adventure, Indiana Dunes State Park's campground in Chesterton has electric sites near Lake Michigan beaches, and Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground offers non-hookup sites. Pro tip: Illinois state park sites are booked through ExploreMoreIL, Indiana state park sites through Camp.IN.gov, and Dunewood through Recreation.gov.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park/kankakeeriver.htmlWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Crete?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV road trip from Crete, with the sweet spot running from mid-June to mid-September when daytime highs average 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. July is the warmest month and the busiest for campgrounds, so book early. September is a local favorite: warm days, cool nights in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes, and brilliant fall color along the Kankakee River by mid-October. Spring (April to May) brings unpredictable storms but lush green prairie and lower rates. Winters are cold (January averages 19 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit with snow), so most area campgrounds close from mid-October through mid-April. Aim for a shoulder-season trip to save money and beat the Chicago-area crowds.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting in Crete?
You'll do great, especially in Crete. First time renting an RV? The flat, gridded roads of Will County and the wide rural routes around Crete (think Goodenow Road, Stony Island Avenue, and Route 1) make this one of the friendliest places in the Chicago region to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, slide-outs, dumping, and water, and they're a text away during your trip. If city driving makes you nervous, skip it: head south or east into open country toward Kankakee River State Park or Indiana Dunes instead of north into downtown Chicago. Choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Crete for an even easier first experience.
idot.illinois.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You will not be stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, jump starts, and towing throughout Illinois and beyond. If a slide-out sticks or the fridge acts up at your campsite near Crete, your host is a quick message away through the RVezy app and can usually walk you through a fix in minutes. For bigger issues, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate solutions. Crete is also conveniently close to multiple RV service shops along I-57 and Route 30, so help is rarely more than a short drive away. Save host and RVezy support contacts on your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008834-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my Crete RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, your RV road trip from Crete can absolutely cross state lines. Indiana is minutes east, and most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, including popular routes to Michigan (about 90 minutes to Warren Dunes), Wisconsin (Wisconsin Dells in around 3.5 hours), Kentucky (Mammoth Cave in about 6 hours), and the Smoky Mountains (around 9 hours). Trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the individual host and protection coverage, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Carry your booking confirmation and ID at border crossings and you are set for a multi-state adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Crete RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, but it is manageable. In northern Illinois, expect to pay slightly above the national average for gas and diesel (Will County prices tend to track close to Chicago). Smaller campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. For a 300-mile loop from Crete to Indiana Dunes and Starved Rock, a Class C might use around 30 gallons. Pro tip: fill up just over the Indiana border on I-80/94 where fuel taxes are lower than in Illinois, and use apps like GasBuddy to scout cheap stations along your route. Driving steady at 60 to 62 mph also boosts efficiency meaningfully.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Crete?
For the best campgrounds near Crete, IL, book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Illinois state parks (including Kankakee River State Park) accept reservations through ExploreMoreIL, and these sites can fill quickly for July weekends. Indiana state park sites, including Indiana Dunes State Park, are booked through Camp.IN.gov and open 6 months in advance. Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground takes reservations through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Private parks in the Crete area are more flexible and sometimes accept walk-ins. Local insider tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have availability, even at popular spots.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234070What are driving conditions like around Crete?
Driving conditions around Crete are generally easy for RVs. The terrain is flat farmland and prairie, roads are wide, and I-57, I-80, and Route 394 give you fast access to the entire region. Avoid driving a tall motorhome straight into downtown Chicago: Lower Wacker, Lake Shore Drive, and most downtown garages have height restrictions that will not accommodate an RV. Watch out for I-80 and I-294 rush hours (6 to 9 am and 3 to 7 pm), and be aware that winter brings snow, ice, and occasional whiteouts from November through March. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but brief. For a stress-free start, ask your host to deliver the RV outside city limits.
weather.gov/lot/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Crete?
Campgrounds near Crete cover the full spectrum. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), hot showers, laundry, and a camp store. Illinois state parks such as Kankakee River State Park provide electric hookups, drinking water fill stations, dump stations, vault or flush toilets, and shower buildings in season. Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground has restrooms and potable water but no hookups, while Indiana Dunes State Park provides electric sites and modern shower houses. Most local parks have a centralized dump station included with your stay, and Love's Travel Stops along I-65 offer public dump and fill for a fee if you are between stays. Always confirm hookup amps when booking.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat features and equipment come with a typical RV rental in Crete?
Expect a fully-equipped home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in Crete includes sleeping for 4 to 8, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), a dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings include linens, kitchenware, and a backup camera, and many add a generator, awning, outdoor speakers, and a TV. WiFi is usually personal hotspot-based since cellular coverage in northern Illinois is strong. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer the same comforts but need a properly rated tow vehicle. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what is included, what is available as an add-on, and any limitations, so there are no surprises at pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crete,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Crete RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Crete offer plenty of add-ons to tailor your trip. Common options include generator use (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), bike racks, kayak/SUP racks, propane refills, extra mileage, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, and bedding packages. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup (great for first-timers) and pickup/drop-off cleaning packages so you do not have to dump tanks yourself. Pickup logistics are simple: most hosts meet you at their home in Crete or nearby Steger, Beecher, or Park Forest for a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough. Build your add-ons in during booking, and message the host with any custom requests, like adding pet bedding or stocking the pantry before you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crete,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure on RVezy. You will pay your rental total (nightly rate, fees, add-ons, and protection) through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit, set by the host, is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup (it is a hold, not a charge) and released after the trip provided the RV comes back in good shape with tanks dumped and fuel topped off as agreed. To avoid issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off, return it on time, and stick to the mileage and generator limits in your listing. Never pay a host outside the platform: doing everything in-app keeps your protection plan and support fully active.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prep an RV for cold weather around Crete?
Crete winters get genuinely cold (January lows around 19 degrees Fahrenheit with regular snow), but a winter RV rental in Crete, IL can be a cozy adventure with the right rig. Look for listings tagged as four-season or with heated and enclosed holding tanks, which prevent freeze-ups. Ask your host about the propane furnace, skirting options, and whether the rig is set up for full shore power at a year-round campground. Pack thermal curtains, a small space heater for shore-power nights, and RV antifreeze for the gray and black tanks. Pro tip: winter trips are dramatically cheaper, and the snowy Kankakee River bluffs are stunning under fresh powder.
