Campgrounds and RV parks near Cullom, IL

The main outdoor draw is the Kankakee River, about 45 minutes northeast. The park is a favorite spot for fishing, hiking, canoeing, bicycling, and camping, and from the Osage loop, campers can directly access a crushed gravel bike path that runs through the park. Rock cliffs are suspended over both the river and a creek that feeds into it, and a small historic cemetery with centuries-old tombstones is located near the camping area. Closer to Cullom, Pontiac offers the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame Museum, the Pontiac-Oakland Auto Museum, and three restored swinging pedestrian bridges over the Vermilion River. The Livingston County 4-H fairgrounds host rodeos, tractor pulls, and the county fair through summer. Families staying at Kankakee South KOA Holiday or Enchanted Shores can add pool time, mini-golf, and playground stops without leaving the property, which suits shorter trips with young kids.

The primary camping season in this part of Illinois runs from mid-April through late October. The Equestrian Campground off Illinois Route 113 is open only from April 1 through October 31, and the main Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park loops follow a similar spring-to-fall window. The booking window opens six months before the planned arrival date, and most parks require reservations at least three to five days in advance, though the exact cutoff varies by location. Private parks such as Kankakee South KOA Holiday and Enchanted Shores typically operate on a similar April-to-October window, with limited or no winter service. Late spring brings high water on the Kankakee and reliable wildflower blooms, but also the wettest stretch of the year. Summer is peak season, when weekends at Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park and the KOA fill early, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Fall is the sweet spot for RV travel here: cooler nights, hardwood color along the river bluffs, and lighter weekend demand after Labor Day. Winter camping options near Cullom are limited, and most private parks winterize their water systems by early November.

Expect flat two-lane approach roads, small-town fuel stops, and a mix of hookup levels. State-park sites at Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park lean rustic-with-power: Potawatomi Campground, classified as Class A (showers and electricity), has 110 sites in a wooded setting. The Potawatomi campground offers shower facilities, a dump station, and flush toilets, and all sites have electricity hookups, with campsites for RVs 35 feet long or smaller.
