Campgrounds and RV parks near Darien, IL

Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is the anchor outdoor attraction. The 2,503-acre preserve is one of the most popular in the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, known for its Rocky Glen waterfall, Sawmill Creek bluff overlook, and extensive trails. Eleven miles of trails are popular with hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers, and several old quarries provide fishing for anglers 16 and older. Families often pair a Darien stay with day trips to Brookfield Zoo, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, and Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Downtown Chicago, Navy Pier, and the museum campus are reachable by car or by Metra from nearby suburban stations. For rainy-day options, Oakbrook Center shopping, indoor waterparks in the region, and the casino floor at the Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort keep the trip moving when the trails are wet.

Peak camping season runs May through October. Summer brings warm, humid weather with afternoon thunderstorms, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out first. Most Illinois state park campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31. Private parks in the DuPage and Will County suburbs typically open earlier and close later than state sites. Spring is cool and wet, with muddy trails and variable overnight lows. Fall delivers the most reliable conditions for touring: crisp days, thinner crowds after Labor Day, and strong color in the DuPage forest preserves through October. Winters are cold and snowy. Many private RV parks close or move to limited winter operations, and forest preserve trails shift to cross-country skiing and hiking rather than camping. Waterfall Glen is managed by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and open to the public year-round, but overnight camping there is restricted to youth groups only. Confirm season dates directly with each campground before booking a shoulder-season trip.

Expect a suburban, highway-adjacent camping experience rather than a wilderness one. Sites near Darien tend to be level and pull-through or back-in with full hookups, and traffic noise from I-55 or I-355 is common at parks close to the interchanges. Cell service and grocery access are strong across the area. Summer humidity, mosquitoes, and afternoon storms are the main comfort issues. Bring bug spray, a surge protector, and awning tie-downs. Trails at Waterfall Glen and other DuPage preserves are crushed limestone and turf, not paved, so plan footwear accordingly. Rig size matters: some older suburban parks were built for travel trailers and may not accommodate larger Class A motorhomes or long fifth wheels. Confirm site length, overhead clearance, and turning access when booking, especially at Martin Campground and other longer-established sites.
