Campgrounds near Delavan, Illinois
Delavan sits in Tazewell County in central Illinois, roughly 25 miles south of Peoria and within a short drive of the Illinois River valley. The surrounding landscape is a mix of row-crop farmland, small towns, and the sandy oak-hickory terrain of Sand Ridge State Forest, just minutes southwest of Peoria, the largest of Illinois' state forests, with sweeping native oak-hickory woodland, extensive pine plantations, grasslands and unique sand prairies, which shapes most of the RV camping options in the area.
RV travelers have a manageable set of choices within a 30 to 45 minute radius. Private parks such as Kentuckiana Campground, Camp A While, and Evening Star Camping Resort handle most full-hookup demand, while Oak Camp and Pine Camp inside Sand Ridge State Forest cover the state-forest style, forested experience. Sites range from open, pull-through gravel pads at the private resorts to shaded, rustic loops in the state forest.
Delavan itself is compact and quiet, with fuel, groceries, and dump-station access available in nearby Pekin, Lincoln, and Peoria. Most travelers use the town as a low-traffic base for exploring central Illinois attractions.
Things to do near Delavan
Most trip plans center on daytime outdoor activity. Sand Ridge State Forest, the largest state forest in Illinois, offers fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, and hunting, and its sandy soils and pine plantings give it a distinctive feel compared with the surrounding prairie. Oak Camp and Pine Camp put visitors within easy reach of those trails.
Water recreation is available at nearby Spring Lake and along the Illinois River, both good for fishing and paddling. Families staying at Kentuckiana Campground, Camp A While, or Evening Star Camping Resort typically use on-site pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities as the base of the trip.
Day trips include the Peoria riverfront, Abraham Lincoln historic sites in Springfield and the town of Lincoln, and the shops in Morton and Pekin.

Central Illinois has a four-season humid-continental climate. Summers are warm, while winters are cold and bring regular snowfall. The area is fairly wet, with precipitation spread relatively evenly throughout the year, though spring tends to be wetter and winter is the driest season. Most private campgrounds in the Delavan area operate from mid-April through mid-October, and the Sand Ridge State Forest campgrounds follow a similar warm-season window with reduced services outside peak months.
Late May through early September is the busiest period, with holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day filling private parks earliest. Weekends in June and July book well in advance at Kentuckiana Campground and Evening Star Camping Resort, while Oak Camp and Pine Camp tend to fill on holiday weekends and during fall hunting seasons.
Spring brings mud and occasional severe storms, fall delivers cooler nights and strong oak-hickory color through October, and winter camping options in the area are limited.

Greg was great! The RV was delivered in a timely fashion and Greg walked me through its various functions and amenities. I was able to travel with my family (5 of us in all) from Central Illinois to Estes Park, Colorado. We were able to step out of our RV every morning to the sight of mountains surrounding us, and the RV handled very well on the mountain roads! Thanks, Greg! My family and I were able to make some terrific memories!

Greg and his wife were excellent to work with and we had the best time traveling in their RV! Really a great experience for first-timers!

How to book
Sand Ridge State Forest sites at Oak Camp and Pine Camp are reserved through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ExploreMoreIL online system, paying by Visa, MasterCard or Discover. IDNR camping and shelter reservations are no longer taken through the mail or over the phone. Regular campsites require a five-dollar non-refundable reservation fee and payment of the full camping and utility fees at the time the reservation is made. A rolling booking window applies, and popular weekends open several months ahead.
Private parks including Kentuckiana Campground, Camp A While, and Evening Star Camping Resort are booked directly through each campground's website or by phone. Holiday weekends often require a two or three night minimum stay and a deposit at time of booking.
RV travelers should confirm site length, hookup type (30 vs 50 amp), and any big-rig turning restrictions before finalizing, particularly at the more rustic state-forest loops.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, low-traffic setting. Roads into Delavan and toward Sand Ridge are mostly two-lane county highways with easy RV access, though the sandy forest roads inside Sand Ridge can be soft after heavy rain. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and patchier in the deeper forest loops.
Private parks such as Evening Star Camping Resort and Kentuckiana Campground typically offer full hookups, showers, and laundry. Oak Camp and Pine Camp are more rustic, with basic restrooms and limited hookups, so plan for self-contained operation. Sand Ridge State Forest is pet-friendly, but dogs must be on a leash and under supervision at all times, and pet owners must clean up after their pets.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, especially near the forest. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Illinois emerald ash borer rules.
