Campgrounds near Diamond, Illinois
Diamond sits in Grundy County in northeastern Illinois, roughly an hour southwest of Chicago along the I-55 corridor. The area gives RV renters quick access to two very different camping styles: private resort parks close to Joliet and the interstates, and wooded state-park sites along the Kankakee River to the south and east.
Within a short drive, travelers can choose Leisure Lake Membership Resort, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, Martin Campground, or the state-run Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park, inside a 4,000-acre park that runs along an 11-mile stretch of the Kankakee River near Bourbonnais.
The mix works well for families and first-time RV renters. Private parks near Joliet offer hookups, laundry, and easy grocery runs, while the state park delivers shaded sites, river access, and trails. Interstate 55 and I-80 put day trips to Chicago, Starved Rock, and the Kankakee River within reach without long drives.
Things to do near Diamond
Kankakee River State Park is the anchor outdoor destination. The park is a favorite spot for fishing, hiking, canoeing, bicycling, and camping, and from the Osage loop, campers can directly access a crushed gravel bike path that runs through the park. Paddlers put in along the Kankakee, and anglers target smallmouth bass and catfish.
Closer to Diamond, motorsports fans base out of Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds on race weekends. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort in Joliet adds casino gaming, dining, and complimentary shuttle service between hotel and Hollywood Casino-Joliet, while Leisure Lake Membership Resort and Martin Campground focus on quieter stays with lake and pond recreation.
Day trips include Starved Rock State Park to the west for canyon hikes, the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie for wildlife viewing, and Route 66 landmarks through Wilmington and Braidwood.

The main RV season in the Diamond area runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Reservations for Illinois state-park campgrounds like Potowatomi can be booked a minimum of three days and a maximum of 180 days in advance of the arrival date, so roughly six months out. Hollywood Casino Joliet RV Park is only open seasonally, typically from the middle of April to the middle of October, and campers must be at least 21.
Late spring brings mild temperatures and higher water on the Kankakee, which is good for paddling but can flood low-lying access points. Summer is warm and humid with the year's heaviest rainfall and afternoon thunderstorms, and it is the busiest booking window for weekends and holidays.
September and October are the sweet spot for RV travelers: cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color along the river bluffs. Winters are cold and snowy, and most private and state campgrounds in the area close, so trip planning should assume an April to October window.

How to book campgrounds near Diamond
State-park sites and private resorts use different systems, so plan the two tracks in parallel. Online reservations for Illinois Department of Natural Resources-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters can be made through the ExploreMoreIL website, and reservations are taken for Kankakee River Class A, BE, and C campgrounds. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made three days before the campsite is needed. For weekend camping it is smart to book well in advance, since the campground fills quickly during peak season.
Private parks such as Leisure Lake Membership Resort, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, and Martin Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone. Speedway campgrounds sell out fastest around race weekends, so lock those in months ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Site styles vary widely. Potawatomi Campground, classified as Class A (showers and electricity), has 110 sites in a wooded setting, and the campsites are for RVs 35 feet long or smaller, so big-rig renters should measure carefully. All campsites have a picnic table and a camp grill, and camping is only allowed in the campgrounds.
At Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, expect a paved, urban-adjacent park with clean showers and bathrooms. Some sites do not have sewer hookups, and campers have reported occasional noise from nearby rail yards and roads.
The campgrounds close at 10 p.m., and all campgrounds observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. No vehicular traffic is allowed during this time. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the rivers in July and August, so pack repellent.
