Campgrounds and RV parks near Downs, IL

Downs sits in McLean County just southeast of Bloomington-Normal, on the flat, farm-covered prairie of central Illinois. The area is a practical base for RV travelers because two Illinois state recreation areas with developed campgrounds are within a short drive, and Interstates 74, 55, and 39 all pass nearby. The closest public option is Moraine View State Recreation Area, a 1,687-acre park built around 158-acre Dawson Lake, with several camp areas including Timberline Ridge, the park's equestrian campground with 30 Class A sites offering water, electricity, and hitching racks. To the south, Clinton Lake State Recreation Area surrounds a 4,900-acre cooling lake and offers the largest concentration of RV sites in the region, followed by Weldon Springs State Recreational Area near Clinton. Private options round out the mix. Arrowhead Acres and Kamp Komfort give travelers alternatives to the state system, useful when public loops fill on holiday weekends or when a shorter overnight stop is all that is needed.

Illinois state park campgrounds, including Moraine View, Clinton Lake, and Weldon Springs, are reserved online through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations can be placed up to six months in advance and must be made at least three days before arrival, so plan ahead rather than relying on same-day online booking. For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as the window opens. Clinton Lake's Class AA full-hookup sites are the hardest to secure and go early. Timberline Ridge at Moraine View is the equestrian loop, so RV travelers without horses should target Gander Bay and the main electric loops instead. Arrowhead Acres and Kamp Komfort are private and booked directly with the campground; call ahead to confirm site length, hookups, and seasonal opening.
