Campgrounds and RV parks near Elmwood, IL

At Woodchuck Ridge in Jubilee College State Park, campers have access to more than 40 miles of multi-use trails that wind through woodland, hills, ravines, and prairies, shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Limited fishing is available in Jubilee Creek and two ponds, and several picnic areas are scattered across the park. Sand Ridge State Forest is best known for its unusual sandy terrain. From Pine Camp, a five-mile orange-loop trail gives easy access to the sandy forest and prickly pear cactus. In winter, roughly 26 miles of snowmobile trails are maintained, and cross-country skiing is permitted when snow cover is sufficient. Sankoty Lakes adds water-based recreation, including kayaking, canoeing, boating, swimming, fly-fishing on a stocked trout stream, and birdwatching. Cabin Fever offers fishing across private lakes plus a swimming beach.

Illinois state-managed campgrounds run on a defined season. Jubilee College State Park's campground facilities are open April 15 to November 1, with the Coyote Cove loop kept open for winter camping on Class B electric sites. Sand Ridge's Pine Camp remains open year-round but is primitive and best suited to shoulder-season stays when insects are less of an issue. Spring is the wettest stretch across central Illinois and can produce muddy trail conditions. At Jubilee, the equestrian campground and trails are closed November 15 through April 15, and Sand Ridge's Horseman's Park can be affected by wet ground during the thaw. Summer brings the busiest bookings, along with biting insects and ticks that are especially notable at Sand Ridge. Fall offers the most reliable trip window: cooler temperatures, changing hardwoods across Jubilee College's rolling topography, and thinner crowds after Labor Day. Winter is quiet, with limited hookups and mostly primitive access; at Sand Ridge, snowmobiling requires at least four inches of snow on the ground.

Facilities differ sharply between the state and private options. At Jubilee College, campsites are Class A electric and Class C with showers, and the campground includes a shower building with flush toilets, a trailer dump station, graveled pads and grills, water hydrants, and primitive toilets. Sand Ridge is more rustic. Pine Campground contains 27 Class C sites with water spigots, pit-vault toilets, fire pads, and space to park two vehicles, and there are no electric or sewer hookups. The campground is not big-rig friendly: Class B units, small Class C rigs, and trailers under about 22 feet fit best. Oak Camp is set up for organized group camping rather than individual RV stays, and Horseman's Park is an equestrian staging area. Sankoty Lakes sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, with full-hookup pull-through RV sites, on-site restrooms and bathhouses, a beach, and a signature restaurant. Cabin Fever offers water and electric plus some full-hookup seasonal sites.
