Camping near Evanston, Illinois
Evanston sits on Lake Michigan just north of Chicago, and RV camping options here require a short drive out of the dense North Shore suburbs. The city itself has no public campgrounds within its limits, so renters typically head north into Lake County or the Chain O' Lakes region, where most of the closest RV-friendly parks are clustered within roughly 30 to 60 minutes of downtown Evanston.
The anchor destination for the area is Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, a 4,160-acre park stretching along the Lake Michigan shore in Zion. Private resorts fill in the gaps: Pingala RV Resort, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park in the Chain O' Lakes area, and Martin Campground round out the closest options.
Expect a mix of state-park camping with electric-only sites and private resorts with full hookups, pools, and family programming. Sites near Lake Michigan and the Chain O' Lakes book earliest for summer weekends.
Things to do near Evanston
Lake Michigan is the main draw. Illinois Beach State Park stretches roughly 6.5 miles along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan in northern Illinois, with swimming beaches, dune trails, and a marsh and forest nature preserve. The park is the state's only remaining beach ridge shoreline and holds a wide range of plant and bird life, which makes it popular with families who want an easy nature outing.
West of the lake, the Chain O' Lakes region offers boating, fishing, and beach time on a connected system of natural lakes and the Fox River. Volo Auto Museum, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, and Metra rail access into downtown Chicago are all within easy reach of the outer campgrounds.

The camping season in the Evanston area runs roughly April through mid-November, driven by the same freeze-thaw pattern that dictates the rest of the upper Midwest. The Illinois Beach State Park campground is open from April 1 through November 15, while nearby private resorts run tighter windows: Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort's overnight season runs from May 1 through October 15.
July and August are peak. The park gets very busy in mid-summer, so reservations should be made as early as possible, and holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day carry a two-night minimum at Illinois state parks.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler weather. Spring brings chilly lake winds and heavier rain, while September and early October deliver clearer, drier days and fall color along the Fox River corridor. Winter camping is essentially unavailable at public and private sites within reach of Evanston, with the Illinois Beach campground closed from mid-November through March.

How to book campgrounds near Evanston
State-park sites use Illinois' central reservation system. Reservations at Illinois Beach can be made up to 180 days (six months) in advance through ExploreMoreIL, and must be made at least three days before arrival. The 24/7 call center for ExploreMoreIL is 866-716-6550. A camping permit is issued on arrival and the camper must have a camping unit at check-in.
Private resorts book directly. Fish Lake Beach, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Pingala RV Resort, and Martin Campground each handle their own reservations by phone or website, and several enforce two-night minimums on summer weekends.
Due to the high use of Illinois Beach on summer weekends, reservations are strongly recommended, and any unreserved sites are available first-come, first-served. For popular holiday weekends, book the day the six-month window opens.
What to expect at Evanston-area campgrounds
State-park sites in this region are relatively basic. The Illinois Beach campground in the southern unit provides Class A Premium sites with electricity and access to showers and sanitary facilities, and campsites do not have individual water or sewer hookups. Water hydrants are placed throughout the campground and a dump station sits at the front. Plan on filling fresh water on arrival and using the dump station on the way out.
Private resorts trend more amenity-heavy. Fish Lake Beach, for example, offers full-hookup RV sites, a heated pool, a hot tub, a sandy beach on Fish Lake, and weekend family programming. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park is a smaller, marina-based operation on the Chain O' Lakes.
Expect mosquitoes near marshes and the lakeshore in early summer, and busy weekend traffic on I-94 heading north out of Evanston.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Evanston, IL
How much does an RV rental in Evanston, IL typically cost?
RV rental in Evanston is often more affordable than booking hotels in nearby downtown Chicago. On RVezy, you'll generally find campervans and travel trailers from around $95 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes from roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from about $250 to $400 per night. Weekly bookings often unlock automatic discounts set by hosts, and shoulder-season trips in April, May, or late September can trim 15 to 25 percent off summer rates. Pro tip: search midweek pickup dates and filter by Instant Book to compare cheap RV rental Evanston options side by side, then message a few hosts to confirm weekly rates before you commit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Evanston%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Evanston, Illinois?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Evanston for every motorhome and trailer listed on RVezy. Illinois does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your standard Class D license works for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and even the big Class A rigs. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which costs under $25 from your local auto club. That's it, you're ready to hit the road.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included on RVezy?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Evanston includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout, not the host. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind for Midwest road trips where surprise hail storms or a tight campground turn-in can happen. Roadside help covers flats, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at checkout so you can pick the option that matches your comfort level for your Evanston RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Evanston RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. That means consistent, predictable rules whether you rent a campervan in Evanston or a fifth wheel for a longer Illinois adventure. There is a full money-back grace period right after booking, with additional refund options depending on how far in advance you cancel. You'll see the exact terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation, and the policy is not displayed in individual listings. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later to lock in summer pricing, since the grace period gives you breathing room if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Evanston?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Evanston options are easy to find on RVezy by ticking the Pet-Friendly filter during your search. Plenty of local hosts welcome dogs, and Evanston itself is a famously dog-loving town, so you'll have great places to stretch their legs before you roll out. Walk the leashed Lakefront Trail along Lake Michigan, visit the Pooch Park dog-friendly area, or grab a patio table at a dog-friendly Central Street cafe. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, mention your dog's size and breed, and ask about their favorite local dog parks, most Evanston hosts are happy to share insider spots.
cityofevanston.org/government/departments/parks-recreationCan the RV be delivered to me in Evanston?
Yes, RV delivery Evanston is one of the most popular options on RVezy and a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer directly at your driveway, a nearby campground like Illinois Beach State Park, or an agreed meet-up point, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, with most Evanston-area drops landing between $2 and $5 per mile round trip. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then ask the host to deliver and set up at your campsite, you'll skip city driving entirely and start your trip with everything plugged in and ready.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008834-Delivery-options-and-feesHow far can I drive on an Evanston RV trip with the included mileage?
You can go a long way, RVezy hosts set their own mileage policies and many Evanston listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Evanston, that easily covers a weekend at Starved Rock State Park (about 100 miles southwest), a Lake Michigan loop to Indiana Dunes National Park (around 60 miles east), or a Wisconsin Dells getaway (roughly 190 miles north). Extra miles are usually $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Evanston, like up to Door County or down to Shawnee National Forest, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or negotiate a higher daily allowance with the host before booking.
dot.illinois.gov/travel-information/travel-information.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Evanston, IL for RV camping?
You have great options within an hour or two of Evanston for RV camping Evanston travelers love. Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 30 miles north on Lake Michigan) offers electric hookups, a swimming beach, and big-rig-friendly sites. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs (about 25 miles southwest) has full hookups and a long open season. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union (around 50 miles northwest) is a family favorite with full hookups, a pool, and mini golf. Blackwell Family Campground in Warrenville (about 30 miles west) is a quiet DuPage forest-preserve gem with seasonal hookup sites. Pro tip: book Illinois Beach summer weekends well in advance through the ExploreMoreIL system.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Evanston?
Late May through early October is prime time for an Evanston RV trip, with the absolute sweet spots being June (highs around 78 to 82 degrees, low humidity) and September (warm days, fewer mosquitoes, beautiful Lake Michigan light). July and August deliver classic summer beach weather, with highs in the mid 80s, but can get humid and busy. Fall foliage peaks in mid to late October and pairs perfectly with a trip to Starved Rock or Galena. Winter rentals (December to February) are available with some hosts for tailgating Bears games or weekend Wisconsin ski trips, just confirm the RV has cold-weather prep. Pro tip: book early-September for the best balance of warm lakefront weather and lighter campground crowds.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Evanston?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV in Evanston is more common than you think, and RVezy hosts make sure of it. Every pickup includes a hands-on orientation where the host walks you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the waste tanks before you leave. You can message the host beforehand with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a tap away during your trip. To skip city driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup directly at your campsite. Pro tip: ease in with a smaller Class B campervan or a 22-foot Class C for your first trip, then take a low-stress practice drive on a quiet stretch of Sheridan Road before pointing the rig toward your campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-94, a dead battery at Illinois Beach State Park, or a propane question late at night is just a phone call away. Help covers towing, lockouts, jump-starts, tire service, and fuel delivery across the U.S. RVezy's customer support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip, and your host is typically your first and fastest call for quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Evanston, that 30 seconds of prep saves real stress later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an Evanston RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Evanston are happy to let you cross state lines, and the Midwest is built for it. From Evanston you can easily drive to Wisconsin Dells (about 190 miles), Door County, Wisconsin (around 260 miles), Indiana Dunes National Park (60 miles), or Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes (around 360 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and protection coverage, so confirm in writing through the RVezy message thread before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a classic loop is Evanston up Lake Michigan's western shore to Milwaukee, then Door County, then back, scenic and easy interstate driving the whole way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Evanston RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan for than most renters expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG. With Illinois gas prices averaging around $3.50 to $3.90 per gallon in the Chicago metro (often a bit cheaper just over the Wisconsin or Indiana border), a 300-mile weekend in a Class C usually runs about $90 to $130 in fuel. Diesel pushers will cost more per gallon but go farther per mile. Pro tip: fill up in Indiana or in Skokie/Niles before heading north, Cook County fuel taxes make Evanston pumps among the priciest in the area, and apps like GasBuddy will save you real money on a longer motorhome rental Evanston trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Evanston?
For Illinois state parks, book through the official ExploreMoreIL reservation system as early as you can, sites are reservable up to six months ahead and summer weekends at popular spots like Illinois Beach State Park, Starved Rock, and Chain O'Lakes sell out quickly when reservations open. Reservations require a non-refundable reservation fee plus the camping and utility fees. Private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA and Camp Bullfrog Lake also fill fast for holiday weekends. Pro tip: for a summer Evanston RV trip, set a calendar reminder for the six-month-out date and book Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends the moment they open.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Evanston?
Evanston is one of the easier Chicago-area launching points for an RV because you can hop on I-94 (Edens Expressway) and be out of the metro in 20 minutes heading north toward Wisconsin or south toward Indiana. Stick to the expressways with a larger rig, Sheridan Road is scenic but narrow, and downtown Evanston streets near Northwestern University have low-hanging trees and tight parking that can scrape tall Class A or Class C roofs (watch for 11 to 12-foot clearance signs). Avoid Lower Wacker and any posted parkway in Chicago, RVs are not permitted on most boulevards. Pro tip: book a host who offers RV delivery Evanston so you skip city driving on day one and learn the rig at your campsite instead.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/getting-around-illinois.htmlWhere can I dump waste and fill fresh water near Evanston?
You have several convenient options for dump stations and potable water within an easy drive of Evanston. Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 30 miles north) has a dump station and water fill available to overnight campers. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs offers a dump station for guests, and Chicago Northwest KOA in Union has full-service hookups plus a dedicated dump. Many travel centers along I-90 and I-94 toward Wisconsin (look for Flying J and Pilot locations) offer paid dumps, often around $10 to $20. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your campground the morning you leave, and bring a 90-degree elbow and a clear sewer hose adapter to make dump-day faster and cleaner.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhat features and amenities come standard in an Evanston RV rental?
Most Evanston RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped and ready to camp, so you can show up with clothes and groceries and go. Expect a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower in Class C and larger rigs, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the floor plan, heating and air conditioning, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many listings include a generator for off-grid power, outdoor awnings, leveling jacks, and starter kits with linens and kitchenware. Wi-Fi varies, some rigs include a hotspot, others rely on your phone. Pro tip: filter campervan rental Evanston listings by Sleeps count, read the listing's amenities section carefully, and message the host to confirm bedding, towels, and any kitchen essentials before you arrive.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a family RV trip from Evanston?
You can customize your family RV trip Evanston right inside the RVezy listing. Common host add-ons include bike racks, kayak or paddleboard carriers, generators, outdoor grills, kids' bedding bundles, camp chairs, kitchen kits, and even pet kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Evanston or a nearby suburb like Skokie, Wilmette, or Rogers Park, but most hosts also offer delivery to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, so review the daily mileage allowance before booking and ask about overage rates if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: ask the host to throw in a generator and a folding e-bike rack, both transform a trip to Indiana Dunes or Starved Rock and are far cheaper to add than to buy.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/camping.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, you book and pay directly through RVezy with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. At booking you'll pay a portion to confirm the trip, with the balance charged before pickup according to the schedule shown at checkout. Hosts set a refundable security deposit, which is held separately from the booking payment and released after the trip assuming no damage, missing items, or excess cleaning. Choosing a higher renter protection plan tier at checkout can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure. Pro tip: take date-stamped video walking around the inside and outside of the RV at pickup and again at drop-off, it's the single best way to keep your security deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park an RV overnight on Evanston streets?
Plan to park your RV at a campground, host's property, or driveway rather than on Evanston city streets. Evanston requires a Recreational Vehicle Parking Permit to park an RV on city streets, and overnight sleeping inside an RV on the street is not allowed. That's why most renters skip street parking entirely by choosing RV delivery Evanston (the host brings the RV to your campsite) or by heading straight to a nearby campground like Illinois Beach State Park or Camp Bullfrog Lake. If you do need a short-term street permit, contact the City of Evanston directly. Pro tip: ask your host about parking before pickup, many have driveway space available for free during your trip prep.
