Campgrounds near Farmer City, Illinois
Farmer City sits in central Illinois between Bloomington and Champaign, giving RV travelers access to two Illinois state recreation areas within a short drive plus private options in and near town. The surrounding DeWitt and McLean county landscape is a mix of prairie farmland, glacially formed moraines, and reservoir shoreline, which shapes most of the local camping.
Clinton Lake State Recreation Area anchors the region on a 4,900-acre cooling lake, and Moraine View State Recreation Area sits about 20 miles north around 158-acre Dawson Lake. Clinton Lake offers the largest shoreline in the area and hundreds of campsites, while Moraine View includes the Timberline Ridge equestrian camp and drive-in loops such as Gander Bay.
Closer to town, Tin Cup RV Park and Arrowhead Acres provide private-park alternatives for travelers who prefer to book directly with an operator rather than through a state reservation system. Weldon Springs State Recreation Area, southwest of Clinton, rounds out the public options with a smaller lake and quieter loops.
Things to do near Farmer City
Water recreation drives most trips. Clinton Lake is a busy boating lake for motorboats and sailboats, with accessible boat launches at the Mascoutin and West Side Access Areas, a fishing pier at the Spillway Access Area, and shoreline fishing for crappie, catfish, bass, and walleye. A 1,000-foot sand beach at Mascoutin is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
At Moraine View, Dawson Lake has an idle-speed limit for motors over 10 HP, and the Black Locust picnic area includes a sandy public beach open on summer weekends and holidays with no lifeguards and no pets or alcohol on the beach. Hikers can pick up the half-mile Tanglewood Nature Trail, the 1.5-mile Tall Timber Trail, or the accessible Timber Point Trail. More than 10 miles of bridle paths run along the Timberline Ridge Trail. Weldon Springs adds interpretive programs and quieter shoreline access.

The main camping season runs from spring through late fall. Many Illinois state park campgrounds operate year-round for self-contained RVs, but amenities are reduced in winter. At Moraine View, shower buildings close by November 1 and reopen by May 1, so cold-weather visitors should plan for onboard water use.
Summer brings peak demand, especially on holiday weekends when Clinton Lake fills with boaters and Dawson Lake hosts anglers. Reservable electric sites at both state parks turn over quickly on Fridays, and midweek arrivals see the most availability. Spring and early fall offer cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and easier same-week bookings.
Winter camping is possible but limited. When the season brings sufficient snow, 7 miles of trails at Moraine View open for cross-country skiing, and field-trial trails accommodate snowmobiles. Ice fishing and ice skating on Dawson Lake are available when the ice is thick enough.

Greg was great! The RV was delivered in a timely fashion and Greg walked me through its various functions and amenities. I was able to travel with my family (5 of us in all) from Central Illinois to Estes Park, Colorado. We were able to step out of our RV every morning to the sight of mountains surrounding us, and the RV handled very well on the mountain roads! Thanks, Greg! My family and I were able to make some terrific memories!

Greg and his wife were excellent to work with and we had the best time traveling in their RV! Really a great experience for first-timers!

What to expect at Farmer City area campgrounds
Expect classic Midwestern reservoir camping: oak and hickory woods, open prairie edges, and lake views rather than mountains. Sites at the state parks are generally level gravel or paved pads with picnic tables and grills. Electric-only hookups dominate the main state-park loops, with a sanitary dump station on site; full hookups with sewer are more typical at the private parks in and around Farmer City.
Alcohol is prohibited in all campgrounds at Moraine View, and select loops at Clinton Lake are also alcohol-free. Quiet hours are enforced, and pets are allowed on leash outside the beach areas.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across the region given proximity to I-74 and Bloomington-Normal. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Clinton, LeRoy, and Bloomington, all within a short drive.
