Campgrounds near Fox Lake, Illinois
Fox Lake sits in the middle of the Chain O' Lakes region of northeast Illinois, a cluster of natural lakes and the Fox River about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and roughly 4 miles south of the Wisconsin border. The area is built around water recreation, with nearly 6,500 acres of interconnected lakes and 488 miles of shoreline feeding a mix of state, private, and county campgrounds within a short drive of town.
The closest public campground is Turner Lake South inside Chain O' Lakes State Park, a Class B-Premium loop set beside a 44-acre lake where only electric trolling motors are allowed. Private, amenity-heavy resorts include Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park on the Chain itself, while Fox River Recreation covers sites south of town. Kenosha County Fair Association sits just across the state line for RVers willing to cross into Wisconsin.
Most sites in the area are geared to families with boats or fishing gear, and demand climbs sharply from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Things to do near Fox Lake
Boating and fishing anchor most trips. The Chain O' Lakes system has no horsepower limits on the connected lakes, but Turner Lake inside the state park is restricted to electric trolling motors only, which keeps it calmer for kids and anglers. Common catches include bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, and northern pike. Boat and canoe rentals are available seasonally through the park concession.
On land, Chain O' Lakes State Park has seven picnic areas and four trail systems, with the Nature's Way hiking trail running about 2.25 miles from the Oak Grove picnic area. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort adds a sandy beach, heated pool, hot tub, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities aimed at families.
In winter, the park opens up ice fishing on Turner Lake and the Chain, plus sledding and cross-country skiing when conditions cooperate.

The core camping season in the Chain O' Lakes area runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort operates for overnight stays from May 1 through October 15, with seasonal sites available starting April 15. Chain O' Lakes State Park runs summer hours from April 1 through October 31, then closes to most activities from the beginning of November through mid-December for hunting.
Summer weekends, especially Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, are the busiest stretches. Waterfront sites fill quickly, and the state park's higher-tier loops carry a holiday-weekend surcharge. Late spring brings the wettest weather of the year, along with peak bug activity in the wetlands. Late August and September are typically drier and less crowded but still warm enough for swimming.
Winter camping options are limited. Most private resorts close by mid-October, and the state park shifts to shorter winter hours, with the park closing at sunset.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book a campsite
State park sites at Chain O' Lakes, including Turner Lake South, are reserved through the Illinois DNR's ExploreMoreIL system or by calling 866-716-6550. Popular loops fill on summer weekends, so booking well ahead is smart, and the on-site map may differ from the reservation-system map, so calling the park office at 847-587-5512 helps confirm site details. Maximum stay is 14 nights in any 30-day period.
Private resorts book directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations through its website and phone line, with longer stays handled by phone. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation also book direct. For county-fairground camping across the state line, Kenosha County Fair Association handles bookings on its own schedule, with limited availability around event weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Chain O' Lakes State Park offers a mix of Class A-Premium electric sites in Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den and more primitive Class B-Premium sites in Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East. Facilities include shower houses, pit toilets near some loops, and a seasonal concession stand selling firewood, bait, and camper supplies. Campers must bring firewood or buy it on site, since gathering wood in the park is prohibited.
Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort lean full-service, with water and electric at every site, full-hookup options, a dump station, laundry, and pull-through sites for big rigs. Expect a family atmosphere, weekend events, and a two-night minimum on many summer weekends.
Pets are allowed at most campsites on leash but not at state-park cabins or on the swim beach at Fish Lake.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fox Lake, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fox Lake?
An RV rental in Fox Lake typically starts around $150 to $250 per night for travel trailers, while larger Class C and Class A motorhomes generally range from $250 to $400 per night depending on size, age, and season. Towables are usually the most affordable option, and booking midweek or in shoulder season (late April to early May, or September) can save you 20 to 30 percent compared to peak July weekends on the Chain O' Lakes. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy so you can skip the tow vehicle entirely and still find a cheap RV rental in Fox Lake that families love.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Fox Lake?
For most RVs you'll book in Fox Lake, your regular Illinois Class D driver's license (or your home state equivalent) is all you need, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Illinois exempts personal-use recreational vehicles from CDL rules, which covers nearly every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome on the platform. To rent an RV in Fox Lake through RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification is handled right inside your account. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance included when I book in Fox Lake?
Yes, every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Chain O' Lakes worry-free. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, giving you control over your peace of mind. It provides real financial protection that thousands of first-time renters rely on every season. If you ever feel uncertain after the host's walkthrough, RVezy support is just a message away. That safety net is one big reason people feel confident booking their first motorhome rental in Fox Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Fox Lake RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy is built to flex with you. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refunds beyond that grace period depend on how close to your trip start date you cancel. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or offers travel credits so your plans stay on track. You'll see the full policy details during checkout and inside your booking. Pro tip: book your Fox Lake RV trip early to secure availability, then adjust dates by messaging your host if your schedule shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Fox Lake?
Absolutely, dogs are welcome in Fox Lake and on many RVezy listings. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search to see every pet-friendly RV rental Fox Lake hosts offer, and message the owner with your pet's size and breed so they can confirm. Chain O' Lakes State Park welcomes leashed dogs (10-foot maximum leash) on its trail system and most picnic areas, and the Fox River waterfront has plenty of grassy stretches for sniff breaks. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which appears upfront before you confirm. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your pup can lounge outside at the campsite while you grill dinner.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Fox Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Fox Lake is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who don't want to tow. Filter listings by Delivery and your host will drop the RV at your home, your marina slip, or directly at Fox Den or Honeysuckle Hollow inside Chain O' Lakes State Park (about 7 miles northwest of downtown Fox Lake). They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run by the mile, and many hosts include free delivery within 10 to 15 miles. This is the easiest way to rent an RV in Fox Lake without ever sitting behind the wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisHow many miles can I drive on a Fox Lake RV rental?
Many RVezy hosts near Fox Lake include generous daily mileage or even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect since most local trips stay within 100 miles anyway. From Fox Lake, you're about 55 miles to downtown Chicago, 35 miles to Lake Geneva (Wisconsin), 75 miles to Milwaukee, and 95 miles to Starved Rock State Park, so a long weekend rarely cracks 300 miles round trip. Mileage allowances and any per-mile overage fees are spelled out clearly on the listing before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Fox Lake, message the host first, they often offer discounted mileage packs for multi-day adventures.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhere should I camp in or near Fox Lake?
You're spoiled for choice on the best campgrounds near Fox Lake. Chain O' Lakes State Park (8916 Wilmot Rd, Spring Grove, about 7 miles away) offers electric sites in the Fox Den and Honeysuckle Hollow loops along with more primitive sites at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo offers full hookups, a sandy swim beach, and waterslides. Just over the Wisconsin line, Richard Bong State Recreation Area and Big Foot Beach State Park add even more options. Reserve through ExploreMoreIL or by calling 866-716-6550. Pro tip: book Fox Den about 6 months out for summer weekends, it fills fast.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Fox Lake?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Fox Lake is mid-May through mid-October, when temperatures climb from the comfortable 60s into the warm 80s and the Chain O' Lakes waterway buzzes with boats. July is the warmest month with average highs near 84°F, while June and September offer the best mix of pleasant weather and thinner crowds. Fall foliage at Chain O' Lakes State Park peaks in early to mid-October and is genuinely stunning. Winters are cold with averages between the teens and low 30s and roughly 30 to 40 inches of snow, so most local hosts pause winter bookings. Pro tip: a September weekday rental is the smart-money play with lower rates, warm lakes, and zero summer-weekend boat wakes.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=42.3967&lon=-88.1837I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy, and your Fox Lake host will give you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, awning, water, propane, and the dump valves, no question is too small. Local roads around Fox Lake are mostly flat and forgiving, with Route 12, Route 173, and Wilmot Road giving you wide, low-traffic practice corridors before any longer trip. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host offering delivery, they'll set everything up at Chain O' Lakes State Park so you only need to relax. Pro tip: do your first parking attempt in an empty lot like the Metra Fox Lake station on a Sunday morning.
ilsos.gov/publications/rules_of_the_road/home.htmlWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Fox Lake includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 12, a dead battery at Grass Lake Marina, or a tow off the shoulder near Spring Grove is one phone call away. Your host is also your first resource for quirks like the generator switch or slide-out controls, and they typically respond within minutes via the RVezy app. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need a hand. Pro tip: take a quick phone video of the orientation walkthrough so you can replay any step if something acts up at the campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fox Lake RV rental to Wisconsin or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed on RVezy rentals, and Fox Lake sits less than 5 miles from the Wisconsin border, making cross-state RV road trips from Fox Lake especially easy. Popular runs include Lake Geneva, WI (35 miles), Wisconsin Dells (140 miles), Door County (240 miles), and Starved Rock State Park, IL (95 miles). Coverage and roadside assistance follow you across US state lines, no extra paperwork needed. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, and trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the listing, so message the host before booking a longer haul. Pro tip: Door County hits peak cherry-blossom magic in late May.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Fox Lake RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your RV budget, but it's easier to estimate than you'd think. Travel trailers and small campervans average 12 to 18 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 10 mpg, and Class A rigs typically 6 to 8 mpg. Illinois gas prices generally run a few cents above the national average, and Lake County stations in nearby Antioch and Round Lake Beach tend to price lower than Fox Lake itself. For a typical weekend hauling a Class C to Chain O' Lakes State Park and back (roughly 30 miles), expect under $20 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up just over the Wisconsin border on Route 12 where prices often drop 20 to 30 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Fox Lake?
Reserve early and you'll never miss out. Chain O' Lakes State Park accepts reservations up to 6 months ahead through the ExploreMoreIL system (camp.exploremoreil.com) or by calling 866-716-6550, and electric sites at Fox Den and Honeysuckle Hollow book out quickly when popular weekends open. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo and Happy Acres Kampground also recommend booking 2 to 4 months ahead for summer. Maximum stay at Chain O' Lakes is 14 nights in any 30-day period. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target Friday, that's when premium electric sites become bookable.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are local driving conditions like around Fox Lake?
Driving in Fox Lake is gentle compared to most metro areas. The terrain is flat, the speed limits are modest (Route 12 through downtown drops to 35 mph), and there are no mountain grades to worry about. Summer weekend traffic on Route 12, Grand Avenue (Route 132), and Wilmot Road can crawl as boaters flood the Chain O' Lakes, so aim to pick up your RV before 10 a.m. on Fridays. Watch for the seasonal lift bridges over the Fox River, which open for marine traffic. Winter brings ice, snow, and occasional white-out conditions from November through March. Pro tip: avoid the Saturday morning crush on Route 173 heading to Chain O' Lakes State Park, take Wilmot Road north instead.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Fox Lake?
Most campgrounds near Fox Lake are well set up for RVs. At Chain O' Lakes State Park, the Fox Den and Honeysuckle Hollow loops offer electric hookups, shower buildings, fishing access, and a centrally located dump station with potable water near the entrance. Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East are primitive (no hookups) but still accommodate large rigs. Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo and Sycamore RV Resort add full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Note: Chain O' Lakes State Park has restrictions on alcohol in many areas, so check current park rules. Pro tip: fill freshwater before entering the park, the lone fill spigot can have a line on Friday afternoons.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Fox Lake RV rental?
You'll be amazed how turn-key these rigs are. Most campervan rental Fox Lake and motorhome listings come stocked with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, dishes, utensils), beds with linens or linen add-ons, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and a propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for everyone traveling. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor chairs, leveling blocks, sewer hose, and a starter propane tank. Wi-Fi hotspots and onboard generators are common as paid add-ons. Each listing shows exactly what's included and what's optional before you book. Pro tip: ask your host about a stocked welcome kit (coffee, dish soap, paper towels), many include it free for first-time renters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Fox Lake offer a variety of helpful extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor patio mats, bike racks, kayak racks, and propane refills. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Fox Lake, Round Lake, Antioch, or Spring Grove, and most hosts schedule a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Delivery to Chain O' Lakes State Park, Fish Lake Beach, or your driveway is offered by many hosts (usually a flat fee plus per-mile rate). Mileage policies are listed clearly on every listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and pickup with a one-night extension is often cheaper than renting a separate tow vehicle for a family RV trip Fox Lake weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fox%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, no cash, no checks, and no awkward exchanges with the host. You pay your trip total securely online when you book, and your host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released back to your card after a clean drop-off. To avoid any deductions, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty both tanks at the Chain O' Lakes State Park dump station if your contract requires it. Pro tip: leave an extra hour at drop-off to walk through the RV with your host together.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available in Fox Lake?
Winter rentals exist but are limited, and they can be a magical adventure if you're prepared. Fox Lake winters are genuinely cold (January averages a high near 30°F and lows in the teens) with about 30 to 40 inches of snow per season, so most hosts winterize their RVs from November through March. A handful of four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and skirting do stay available, often parked at a private campground with full shore-power hookups. Chain O' Lakes State Park keeps trails open for cross-country skiing and ice fishing, and winter rates can be 30 to 40 percent cheaper. Pro tip: if you want a winter rental, message hosts directly and ask about a stationary delivery to a hookup site, that's the cozy, low-stress way to do it.
