Campgrounds and RV parks near Fox Lake Hills, IL

Fox Lake Hills sits in the Fox Chain O' Lakes region of northern Lake County, Illinois, about an hour northwest of Chicago and close to the Wisconsin border. The area is built around a system of connected lakes linked by channels and the Fox River, making it one of the busiest inland boating and fishing destinations in the Midwest. The park borders three natural lakes, Grass, Marie, and Nippersink, and the Fox River connects the other seven lakes, Bluff, Fox, Pistakee, Channel, Petite, Catherine, and Redhead, that make up the Chain, and the park contains a 44-acre lake within its boundaries, Turner Lake, adding up to nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline. RV travelers use the region as a base for water recreation, forest preserve trails, and short trips into Wisconsin. Campground options range from a large state park with multiple loops to private lake resorts and a fairgrounds RV area across the state line. Chain O' Lakes State Park anchors the public options, while Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park near Antioch, and Fox River Recreation cover the private side. Kenosha County Fair Association in Wilmot, Wisconsin adds another option a short drive north. Most sites are within a 15 to 30 minute drive of Fox Lake Hills, keeping grocery runs, marinas, and boat launches close at hand for families traveling by RV.

State park sites are booked through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reservation system at camp.exploremoreil.com, which covers Turner Lake South and the other loops at Chain O' Lakes State Park. A $5 non-refundable reservation fee is required, and the maximum stay for campsites is 14 nights in a 30 day period. Private campgrounds use their own systems. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort books through its website and front desk, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park handles reservations directly. Kenosha County Fair Association recommends reserving early to secure a space for special events, and future reservations can be made 11 months prior to stay unless otherwise noted by the office. For summer weekends, aim to book two to three months out. Holiday weekends on the chain often sell out earlier, and premium electric sites go first.
