Campgrounds near Franklin, Illinois
Franklin sits in Morgan County in west-central Illinois, roughly between Jacksonville and Springfield. The surrounding countryside is farmland cut by small creeks and pockets of oak-hickory woods, which shape the local camping options: private family parks with full hookups, plus a nearby state park focused on a fishing lake.
Crazy Horse Campground, north of Jacksonville and west of Springfield near Ashland, is the closest full-service option and works well for families needing pull-through RV sites, cabins, and on-site activities. Crazy Horse Campground, L.L.C. is the same family-owned property. Buena Vista Farms Campground and Double J Campground and RV Park round out the private choices in the immediate area.
For a public-land stay, Beaver Dam State Park lies to the southeast, about seven miles southwest of Carlinville in Macoupin County. It centers on a 59-acre lake and offers electric RV sites, tent areas, and a rent-a-cabin managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Together the options cover short overnight stops, weekend fishing trips, and longer family stays.
Things to do near Franklin
Fishing anchors the area. Beaver Dam Lake is managed by IDNR for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and sunfish, and the quiet water suits kayaks and small boats. Crazy Horse Campground has stocked catch-and-release ponds, a swim area, and disc golf on site, plus regular weekend events during the main season.
Hiking is limited but pleasant: Beaver Dam State Park has more than eight miles of trails through oak-hickory forest, with a route that skirts the lake and marsh. The park also has a free archery range. Wildlife watching turns up deer and wild turkey.
Off-site trips include Lincoln historic sites and the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, plus the shops and museums of Jacksonville.

The main camping season in west-central Illinois runs roughly April through October. Crazy Horse Campground calls April to October its main season but stays open year-round, which is useful for hunters and shoulder-season travelers. Most other private parks in the area follow a tighter April-to-October window. Beaver Dam State Park keeps its campground accessible outside those months as well, though amenities are reduced.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent thunderstorms and soft ground at primitive sites. Late May into early June is popular for fishing as the lake warms. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon storms possible; shaded sites under mature oaks help.
Early fall is the sweet spot for RV travel: cooler nights, lower humidity, fewer bugs, and clearer skies. Mid-August brings a crowd surge tied to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, so reserve early for that window. Winter camping options are limited, and many private parks close or run reduced services.

How to book near Franklin
Private parks in the Franklin area handle their own reservations. Crazy Horse Campground takes bookings online through its website or by phone, with nightly, weekly, monthly, and seasonal options for full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and camping cabins. Buena Vista Farms Campground and Double J Campground and RV Park book directly with the operator; call ahead in peak summer, especially on state-fair weekends.
For Beaver Dam State Park, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources uses the ExploreMoreIL reservation system. The trailer area has 66 RV sites, of which 40 are reservable and the rest are first-come, first-served. The rent-a-cabin next to the shower house is also reserved through ExploreMoreIL. Group and youth-group areas require advance contact with the site office.
What to expect near Franklin
Expect quiet, rural surroundings. Roads into the campgrounds are paved or well-maintained gravel, and terrain is flat to gently rolling, so towing and leveling are straightforward. Crazy Horse offers level packed-gravel sites that accommodate large rigs, with pull-through and back-in options and full hookups.
At Beaver Dam State Park, RV pads have electric hookups (15, 20, 30, and 50 amp) but no water or sewer at the site. A central shower building with flush toilets and a sanitary dump station serve the trailer area, and drinking water is available in the campground. Sites sit among large oak and hickory trees for shade.
Cell coverage is generally usable but can be spotty in wooded pockets. Summer humidity, mosquitoes near ponds, and the odd severe-weather warning are the main things to plan around; bring bug spray, a weather radio, and sun cover.

You are covered. Yes, an RV road trip from Franklin to neighboring states is allowed and very popular. Travel into Canada is allowed with some hosts depending on their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, since coverage does not extend across that border. Stick to the US and Canada and you have thousands of miles of possibility.

Fuel is the biggest variable on any RV road trip from Franklin, IL, and the good news is Illinois gas prices in Morgan County typically sit close to the national average. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 mpg for a larger Class A, and 12 to 18 mpg for a truck pulling a travel trailer. For a weekend round trip to Pere Marquette State Park (about 120 miles total), budget $40 to $70 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Jacksonville or Springfield rather than smaller towns along Route 100, where prices tend to climb a few cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For a smooth Franklin IL RV trip, book popular campgrounds as far ahead as you can, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall, and be alert for sudden thunderstorms (and occasional tornado warnings) between April and July. If you're heading south toward Pere Marquette on Route 100 along the Mississippi River bluffs, the road is scenic but narrow in spots, so take it slow. Pro tip: avoid driving at dusk in rural Morgan County, when deer are most active near the roadway.

A family RV trip from Franklin, IL practically plans itself. Start with two nights at Lake Jacksonville Campground for swimming, bass fishing, and easy access back to town for supplies.
