Campgrounds and RV parks near Gardner, IL

The Kankakee River anchors most outdoor activity in the area. Anglers target bass, channel cats, walleye, and northern pike, Rock Creek offers another fishing spot, and canoeists favor the shallow, gentle water for downstream floats. Miles of trails follow both sides of the river and are used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Off the water, families can explore the historic Route 66 stops in Gardner, including the two-cell jail and the Riviera Roadhouse site. Day trips reach the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie to the north and the shops and restaurants of Morris and Joliet. Race fans staying at Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds can walk to track events, and guests at Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort have on-site gaming and dining.

Northern Illinois has long, warm, humid, and wet summers and freezing, snowy, windy winters, a classic humid continental pattern. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private resorts fill weekends and holidays quickly. State park camping follows a seasonal rhythm. At Kankakee River State Park, the Potawatomi Class A campground operates the main camping season from spring through fall, and the Equestrian Campground off Illinois Route 113 is open only from April 1 through October 31. Shoulder months in April, May, and September typically offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier last-minute availability, though nighttime temperatures can drop close to freezing early and late in the season. Winter closes most public campgrounds in the region, and private resorts scale back services. Snow, ice, and wind chill make RV travel challenging from December through February, so travelers planning cold-weather trips should confirm winter hookups, water availability, and road access with each campground before booking.

At the state park, sites are wooded and rustic. Potawatomi Campground, classified as Class A (showers and electricity), has 110 sites in a wooded setting, arranged in four loops, and all campsites have a picnic table and a campgrill. Site lengths vary, so RV travelers should book a site that fits their rig. Quiet hours are enforced. The campgrounds close at 10 p.m., and all campgrounds observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and no vehicular traffic is allowed during this time. Credit cards are not accepted, and no alcohol is allowed. Private resorts near Gardner generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry, with amenities like pools, casino access, or lake activities depending on the property.
