Georgetown camping overview
Georgetown sits in Vermilion County in east-central Illinois, roughly ten miles south of Danville and close to the Indiana state line. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the wooded reclaimed-mine landscape of Kickapoo State Recreation Area and the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River, the only National Scenic River in Illinois. Interstate 74 runs just north of town, giving straightforward access to state park campgrounds, private RV parks, and equestrian camps within a short drive.
The surrounding terrain is a mix of farmland, hardwood ridges, and deep-water ponds formed from former surface mining operations. Public campgrounds in the area are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and range from electric-hookup loops suitable for larger rigs to primitive walk-in and horse-camp sites. Private options fill in with full-hookup sites and lake access. Most nearby parks operate year-round, though shower buildings and some loops close in the cold months.
Things to do near Georgetown
Outdoor activity in the area centers on water and trails. Kickapoo State Recreation Area has 221 acres of ponds and lakes with nearly 35 miles of hiking trails, 22 deep-water ponds accessible to electric motor boats, canoes, and kayaks, and the Vermilion River running through the park. Scuba diving is also permitted within the park, a rare draw in the Midwest. Paddlers can rent canoes and kayaks from the on-site concession during warmer months.
Equestrians head to Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area, which consists of over 3,000 acres and 35 miles of equestrian trails. Anglers work the lakes and rivers for bass, catfish, and bluegill. In winter, cross-country skiing and ice fishing take over, and hunting seasons draw visitors to the wildlife areas each fall.

The main camping season near Georgetown runs from spring through fall, with the busiest weeks falling between Memorial Day and Labor Day. At Kickapoo State Recreation Area, shower buildings are closed by November 1 and reopen May 1, with adjustments for weather. Sportsmans Lake Road, the I-74 Loop, Fox campground, Erie campground, Redear campground, and the Road to Inland Sea close at first snowfall until spring. Even so, campsites remain available year-round with RV and electric hookups.
Spring brings wildflowers and strong flows on the Middle Fork, along with the wettest stretch of the year, so low-lying sites can be soft. Summer weekends fill quickly, and holiday dates go first. Fall delivers cool nights, hardwood color through October, and active hunting seasons on wildlife-area lands, which can affect trail access. Winter camping is quieter and primitive, with limited services and first-come, first-served permits issued through campground hosts at Kickapoo during the off season.
How to book campgrounds near Georgetown
State-run sites at Kickapoo State Recreation Area, including Redear Campground, are reserved online through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations for the main campground are available from May 1st to October 31st at ExploreMoreIL, and any camping outside of this timeframe is on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made at least 3 days in advance through the ExploreMoreIL site, and non-reserved sites are available upon arrival with a 2-night maximum stay on walk-ups.
Class C RV sites at Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area, including the equestrian camp, are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Private campgrounds such as Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground, Turkey Run Campground, and Peaceful Waters Campground book directly through the operator by phone or their own website rather than through a state portal.
What to expect at Georgetown campgrounds
Public campgrounds in the area lean rustic but functional. Kickapoo has two major campgrounds for tent and trailer camping with 184 sites, about half with electrical hookups, two shower buildings available to all campers, and a sanitary dump station; campers on electrical sites pay for the availability of electricity even if the service is not used, and a limited number of walk-in sites are available for primitive campers. There are no water hookups, but potable water is available at the dump station.
RV sites at Middle Fork are fairly primitive Class C sites with no hookups and no access to showers. Equestrian sites include picket-line trees and shaded pads. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, and lake access. Cell coverage is generally solid near I-74 and weaker deeper in the wildlife area.
