Campgrounds and RV parks near Gibson City, IL

Water recreation drives most trips. Clinton Lake covers 9,300 acres and supports picnicking, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, and water skiing, with fall foliage in season and ice fishing and snowmobiling on the frozen lake in winter. Moraine View adds a smaller lake with a swimming beach, boat rental, and a concession stand. Hiking is manageable for families. A short self-guided nature trail winds around a lake finger past a beaver dam and lodge, a mid-length timber trail offers moderate terrain with primitive sites along its course, and an accessible timber point path suits campers with limited mobility. Timberline Ridge Trail carries several miles of bridle paths through much of the area. Off-water, families often visit the Harvest Moon Twin Drive-In in Gibson City, Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve in Mahomet, and the museums and college-town amenities of Champaign-Urbana.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal swings. The average last spring frost falls in mid-April and the average first fall frost in mid-October, which frames the practical RV season for most travelers using unwinterized rigs. At Moraine View, facilities scale back in the cold months. Shower buildings typically close in late fall and reopen in spring, and the campground remains open for cold-weather use with reduced services. Winter still draws visitors for ice fishing and ice skating on the lake when the ice is thick enough, and cross-country ski trails open when snow allows. Summer is peak booking season across the state parks. Holiday weekends fill quickly, waterfront and full-hookup sites are the first to go, and shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October usually offer more availability and cooler, drier weather. Clinton Lake is open year-round with the exception of the full week prior to first firearm deer season, when no entry is allowed in the Mascoutin area for a special firearm deer hunt, so campers should check park schedules before booking.

State park sites in this area tilt toward electric rather than full hookups. Clinton Lake campgrounds feature 17 Class AA campsites, 277 Class A campsites, 9 Class B/S campsites, and 5 Class C campsites, with most adaptable to either tents, trailers, or motor homes. At Moraine View, Gander Bay Campground has 137 Class A sites with electric and sewer hookups, water spigots in several locations, and 102 sites that can be reserved, while Catfish Bay Campground has 22 single-family campsites without hookups that accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. Expect gravel pads, fire rings, and picnic tables at most sites. Amenities include potable drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. At Clinton Lake, camping loops H, I, J and K are alcohol-free and portions of the Class AA, A and B/S loops and the group camp are handicap-accessible.
