Campgrounds near Glencoe, Illinois
Glencoe sits on Chicago's North Shore along Lake Michigan, roughly 20 miles north of downtown Chicago. The village itself is residential with no campground inside its boundaries, so RV travelers plan trips around a ring of public and private parks north and northwest of the city, mostly in Lake and McHenry counties. Drive times from Glencoe run from about 30 minutes to the closer private resorts up to just over an hour to the state parks near the Wisconsin border.
The two anchor destinations are Illinois Beach State Park, which stretches 6.5 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan, and Chain O' Lakes State Park, located in northeast Illinois in both McHenry and Lake counties at the heart of a water system with nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline. Private options include Pingala RV Resort, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park on the Chain.
Most campers pair a Chicago-area itinerary, lakefront swimming, forest preserve trails, or fishing on the Chain of Lakes, with a base at one of these parks.
Things to do near Glencoe
Lake Michigan is the main draw at Illinois Beach State Park. The 4,160-acre park offers swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and camping, and its dunes and beach ridge shoreline make it distinct from the interior parks.
Inland, the Chain O' Lakes system is built around boating and fishing. Species in the chain include bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass. At Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park, a pier and boat launch make fishing easier for anglers, and boat and canoe rentals are available at the park concession stand.
Family-oriented private resorts add pools, beaches, and organized activities. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs a heated pool, hot tub, mini golf, playgrounds, and themed weekend events on a private 80-acre lake.

The camping season in northeast Illinois is short and concentrated. The campground at Illinois Beach State Park is open from April 1 through November 15, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs overnight camping May 1 through October 15. Chain O' Lakes State Park operates year-round for day use, with campgrounds active in the warm season.
Summer is peak. Due to high use of Illinois Beach on summer weekends, reservations are strongly recommended, and Turner Lake South and the other Chain O' Lakes camp areas tend to fill quickly on summer weekends, so booking in advance is advised. Spring and early fall offer cooler weather, lower demand, and fewer bugs, though lake winds off Lake Michigan can be sharp.
Winter shifts the parks to non-camping recreation. Ice fishing, sledding, and snowshoeing are popular when temperatures drop and the ice thickens, with ice fishing available on the Chain O' Lakes and Turner Lake and a sledding hill near the Chain O' Lakes park office.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book campgrounds near Glencoe
Illinois state park sites are booked through the state's central system. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance at ExploreMoreIL. For Illinois Beach State Park, reservations are accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30 and are recommended, especially on holiday weekends. Chain O' Lakes uses the same system, with phone booking at 866-716-6550.
Private resorts handle bookings directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations through its website and office, with deposit and cancellation terms tied to the arrival date. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Pingala RV Resort also book direct through their own channels.
For holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, plan several months out. Limited first-come, first-served sites exist at the state parks but are unreliable in peak season and often taken by Friday morning.
What to expect on site
State park campgrounds in this area are large but rustic by RV-resort standards. The Illinois Beach South Unit campground offers 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity, showers, and sanitary facilities, along with a dump station and potable water fill. Sites are electric only, with no water or sewer at the pad.
At Chain O' Lakes, expect a mix of classes. Class A-Premium areas (Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den) total 151 sites, while three Class B-Premium camp areas (Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East) have a total of 87 sites. Bring bug spray, as mosquitoes and ticks are commonly reported near the lakes and marshes.
Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offer full hookups, cabins, and an amenity-heavy family atmosphere with a heated pool, hot tub, dog park, and camp store.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Glencoe, IL
How much does an RV rental in Glencoe, IL cost?
RV rentals in Glencoe are surprisingly affordable for a North Shore Chicago suburb. On RVezy, you can rent an RV in Glencoe starting around $90 to $150 per night for travel trailers and campervans, with larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $325 per night. Cheap RV rental Glencoe options are easiest to find midweek and during shoulder season (April, May, late September, October), when demand from Ravinia Festival crowds and summer Lake Michigan travelers dips. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and look for owners who include free miles or generator hours. Booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead of a July or August trip usually locks in the best nightly rate.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/What license do I need to rent an RV in Glencoe, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you'll find on RVezy in Glencoe, your regular driver's license is all you need. Illinois allows personal-use recreational vehicles to be driven under a standard Class D license as long as the rig is 16,000 pounds or less, which covers almost every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome listed locally. You'll also need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before you fly in. That's it, no CDL, no RV endorsement, no special test required.
ilsos.gov/departments/vehicles/drivers-license/index.htmlWhat protection is included with my Glencoe RV rental?
Every RV rental in Glencoe booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps cover most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind without arranging coverage yourself. During checkout you choose from different coverage levels (the guest selects, not the host) so you can decide how much extra cushion you want. Combined with roadside help for flat tires, lockouts, and breakdowns, it's the safety net that makes first-time renters feel confident hitting the road in a motorhome rental Glencoe travelers trust.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Glencoe trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a clear, consistent cancellation policy on every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a Glencoe RV trip with confidence. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. Because RVezy (not the host) manages cancellations, the experience is the same no matter which listing you pick, and the policy isn't displayed on individual listings. Pro tip: if a forecast looks rough before a Lake Michigan weekend, message your host early and contact RVezy support so the team can help you rebook or adjust dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Glencoe?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Glencoe options are easy to find. Just flip the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every local listing whose host welcomes dogs (and sometimes cats). Glencoe itself is a dream for dog owners: the Green Bay Trail runs right through town, the Chicago Botanic Garden allows leashed dogs on designated trails on weekdays, and nearby Illinois Beach State Park has a leash-friendly stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline 25 miles north. Most hosts ask that pets be crated when alone in the RV and that you clean up any hair before drop-off. Mention your pet in your booking message so the host can leave bowls or a pet bed ready.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Glencoe?
Yes, RV delivery Glencoe is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're nervous about driving a big rig through North Shore traffic on Sheridan Road or I-94. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental Glencoe straight to your campsite at Illinois Beach State Park, Chain O' Lakes State Park, or even a private driveway in Glencoe, Winnetka, or Highland Park. They'll level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Filter by Delivery on the search page and message the host with your destination for an exact quote.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlHow far can I travel on a Glencoe RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of road ahead of you. Most RVezy hosts in Glencoe include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. From Glencoe you can reach Starved Rock State Park in about 2 hours (95 miles southwest), the Wisconsin Dells in roughly 3 hours (180 miles north), Indiana Dunes National Park in 75 minutes (60 miles east), and the Lake Geneva area in just over an hour (55 miles north). Extra miles usually run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: map your route before booking and ask the host to bundle a mileage package, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage at drop-off.
nps.gov/indu/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Glencoe, IL?
You've got fantastic options within an hour of Glencoe. Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 25 miles north) offers full-hookup sites right on Lake Michigan with sandy beach access. Chain O' Lakes State Park near Spring Grove (50 miles northwest) has wooded electric sites and great fishing. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Lemont (35 miles south) is a Cook County Forest Preserve gem with full hookups, modern bathhouses, and quick access to the Centennial Trail. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (45 miles northwest) is family-friendly with a pool and beach. For RV camping Glencoe travelers love most, book Illinois Beach 6 months ahead, summer weekends sell out fast.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Glencoe?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV road trip from Glencoe, with June, July, and August offering long warm days averaging 78 to 85°F and ideal Lake Michigan beach weather. September and early October are the local insiders' secret: highs in the 60s and 70s, fewer crowds at Ravinia and the Chicago Botanic Garden, and brilliant fall color along the North Shore and into Wisconsin. Winters here are genuinely cold (often 15 to 30°F with lake-effect snow), so most campgrounds and many RV hosts pause winter bookings between November and March. If you do want a winter rental, filter for four-season rigs with heated tanks.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Glencoe?
You'll be in great hands, first time renting an RV is exactly who RVezy is built for. Every Glencoe host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, run the generator, operate the awning, dump the tanks, and switch between propane and shore power. They share their cell number for the whole trip, so you have a real person to text if you can't find the water pump switch at 9 p.m. RVezy's support team is also one tap away. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer or Class C motorhome rental Glencoe (easier to drive than a Class A), and book a campground within 90 minutes for your first night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003066194-RentersWhat happens if something breaks down on my Illinois RV trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RV rental in Illinois booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. One call gets you help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns whether you're parked at Illinois Beach State Park or rolling down I-90 toward Rockford. Your host is also a direct resource for quirky questions like why a slide won't retract, and they often talk you through fixes in minutes. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave Glencoe, and snap photos of the fuse panel and breaker box during your walkthrough so troubleshooting is easy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Glencoe RV rental to Wisconsin, Michigan, or across state lines?
Yes, an RV road trip from Glencoe is perfectly set up for crossing state lines. Most hosts welcome trips into Wisconsin (Lake Geneva, Door County, the Dells), Indiana (Indiana Dunes National Park), Michigan (Saugatuck, Sleeping Bear Dunes), and beyond, the protection package and roadside assistance follow you across all 48 contiguous states. Just confirm your itinerary in your booking message so the host knows your route. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Canada trips are possible with some hosts; ask directly before booking. Popular 4 to 7 day loops from Glencoe include Door County (5 hours north) and the Upper Peninsula via the Mackinac Bridge.
nps.gov/slbe/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget for gas?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Campervans and small Class B rentals around Glencoe typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually drop highway MPG by 25 to 35 percent. Illinois gas prices tend to run higher than national average (Chicago metro often $0.30 to $0.60 above the U.S. mean) thanks to state and Cook County fuel taxes, so consider filling up just over the Wisconsin or Indiana border on longer trips. Pro tip: use GasBuddy and aim to refuel in Lake County, IL or Kenosha, WI where prices are noticeably friendlier than in Glencoe proper.
www2.illinois.gov/rev/research/taxinformation/excise/Pages/MotorFuel.aspxHow far in advance should I book a campground near Glencoe?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Illinois state park campgrounds, including Illinois Beach and Chain O' Lakes, open reservations 6 months in advance through Reserve America's Illinois DNR portal, and prime summer weekends often fill the same day they open. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Camp Bullfrog Lake and Camp Reinberg take reservations through their own site about 12 months out. Private parks (Fish Lake Beach, KOAs in Wisconsin) generally book 3 to 6 months ahead for July and August. Pro tip: if you're flexible, Sunday through Thursday nights at Illinois Beach State Park often have openings even mid-summer, perfect for a quick getaway when other weekends are sold out.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Glencoe and the North Shore?
Driving is very manageable once you know the local rhythm. Glencoe sits along Sheridan Road, a scenic but narrow lakeside route, so most RV drivers prefer using I-94 (the Edens Expressway) or US-41 to get in and out. Rush hour southbound toward Chicago (7 to 9 a.m.) and northbound (4 to 6:30 p.m.) gets heavy, so plan departures outside those windows. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls between November and March, and summer thunderstorms can roll in fast off Lake Michigan. Watch for low railroad underpasses on Green Bay Road, your host will flag any clearance issues during the walkthrough. Pro tip: tall Class A motorhomes should stick to I-94 and avoid the Lake Cook Road viaducts.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/indexWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Glencoe?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Glencoe RV trip. Illinois Beach State Park offers electric hookups (no water at most sites), modern shower buildings, and a dump station near the entrance. Camp Bullfrog Lake provides full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry. Chain O' Lakes State Park has electric sites and centralized water fills. For dumping and refilling water between stops, the Oasis travel plazas on I-90 and the Belvidere Tollway Oasis have RV-friendly facilities. Most parks supply picnic tables and fire rings at every site. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, Illinois state parks mostly run 30-amp, while many newer rentals are 50-amp.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in Glencoe?
You'll be impressed with how loaded these rigs are. A typical campervan rental Glencoe sleeps 2 to 4 with a convertible bed, mini-fridge, two-burner stove, and often a wet bath. Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 8 with a queen bed, full kitchen (stove, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer), bathroom with shower, dinette, roof AC, and furnace. Class A and fifth wheel rentals add slide-outs, full-size refrigerators, smart TVs, sound systems, and outdoor speakers. Most include linens, cookware, leveling blocks, and a starter kit of toilet paper and tank chemicals. Generators, solar, and onboard Wi-Fi hotspots are common add-ons. Check the listing's amenities list, hosts spell out exactly what's included, and you can message them with questions before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glencoe%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with Glencoe RV rentals?
Glencoe hosts offer a great menu of extras to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include camp chairs and tables, bedding and towel packages, bike racks, kayaks, paddleboards, portable grills, generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet packages. Most listings show free miles per night (commonly 100 to 150) with overage at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, plus a set number of free generator hours per night. Pickup usually happens at the host's home in Glencoe or a nearby North Shore town like Northbrook or Highland Park, or you can choose delivery for a per-mile fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking, hosts often discount packages compared to ordering items separately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glencoe%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, no cash, no third-party apps, no off-platform transfers (which also protects your protection plan eligibility). A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is held on your card before pickup and released after drop-off once the host confirms the rig came back clean, on time, and undamaged. To avoid surprises, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted on your agreement, and empty the gray and black tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Glencoe for winter or shoulder-season travel?
Yes, a winter or shoulder-season RV rental in Glencoe can be a magical way to see the Chicago Botanic Garden's Lightscape display or chase snow up in Wisconsin. Look for listings tagged as four-season or winter-ready, these have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces that handle the 15 to 30 F lows common from December through February. You'll usually want a park with shore power (full hookups beat boondocking in the cold) like a Wisconsin Jellystone resort or one of the few year-round Illinois private parks. Pro tip: ask your host about a heated water hose and skirting, and use RV antifreeze in your tanks to prevent freeze-ups overnight.
