Camping near Glenwood, Illinois
Glenwood is a village in Cook County on the southern edge of the Chicago metro, roughly 25 miles from downtown and close to the Indiana state line. The area sits on the Valparaiso Moraine, so terrain is gently rolling rather than flat, with wooded ravines cut by Thorn Creek. That geography shapes where RVers stay: private RV parks cluster in the surrounding counties and across the border in northwest Indiana, while the Thorn Creek Trail System threads through Glenwood, Park Forest, Chicago Heights and neighboring communities for day trips.
Glenwood itself does not have an RV park inside village limits, but several full-hookup options sit within a short drive. Closest campgrounds include Emerald Trails Campground and, across the state line, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park near Cedar Lake, Indiana. Enchanted Shores and Pingala RV Resort round out the near-Glenwood inventory.
Most travelers use Glenwood as a base for Chicago sightseeing, Indiana Dunes day trips, and the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Interstates 80, 94 and 394 all pass within a few miles, which makes moving a rig around the region straightforward.
Things to do around Glenwood
The Forest Preserves of Cook County dominate outdoor recreation on this side of the metro. Sauk Trail Woods, a 630-acre preserve on the Valparaiso Moraine, offers a paved trail loop on the Thorn Creek Trail System, picnic groves shaded by oak trees, and a 29-acre Sauk Lake for fishing and birdwatching. The wider Thorn Creek Trail System connects multiple preserves with more than 20 miles of paved and stone trails through woodlands and wetlands.
For bigger days out, downtown Chicago museums, Brookfield Zoo, and the Indiana Dunes lakeshore are all within an hour's drive under normal traffic. Families with rigs often split time between city excursions from nearby Metra stations and quiet trail days closer to camp.
Anglers, paddlers and cyclists will find additional options at Cedar Lake in Indiana, a short drive southeast, where several of the listed campgrounds sit near the water.

June - August
80° / 62°F 100 mmWarm and humid; peak bookings, reserve early

December - February
34° / 21°F 50 mmCold and snowy; many private parks close full hookups
Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when daytime highs are comfortable, forest preserve facilities are fully staffed, and Chicago-area events pull heavy weekend demand. Portable bathrooms at Cook County forest preserve sites like Sauk Trail Woods are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting, so shoulder-season day trips may find fewer services on site.
Spring and fall are the most flexible windows. Lake Michigan breezes moderate temperatures during both seasons, keeping conditions pleasant for hiking and biking, though rain is more frequent in spring. Chicago-area precipitation is heaviest from late spring through summer, and severe thunderstorms are common during those months, so watch forecasts and know your rig's storm plan.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Many private parks close their full-service loops, snow and freeze cycles are routine, and Illinois state park camping options in the region operate on reduced schedules. Plan hookup needs, water lines and heating accordingly.

Wonderful hosts. Extremely accommodating and great communication/support. RV was clean and well maintained. We took it out west to South Dakota, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (though would recommend some driving experience to navigate mountain passes). Wouldn't hesitate to rent this RV again! We never thought we would enjoy traveling in an RV as much as we did. Our family of 7 had a great time and made some wonderful memories.

She was great and very available during the entire trip.

How to book a site
Private parks around Glenwood, including Emerald Trails Campground, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park, Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park, Enchanted Shores and Pingala RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends, holiday weekends and Chicago-area event dates fill first, so book several weeks out for July and August stays.
For Illinois state park sites in the wider region, reservations go through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Online reservations for IDNR-hosted camping, cabins, group camps and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website using Visa, MasterCard or Discover, and IDNR no longer takes reservations by mail or phone. Sites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made at least three days before arrival. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a mix of suburban and semi-rural surroundings rather than a wilderness setting. Access roads are paved, big-box supplies and groceries are close, and cell service is reliable throughout the area. Sites at nearby private parks typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, with pull-through spots at some properties.
Road noise from I-80, I-94 and I-394 can carry to campgrounds sited near the corridors, so request interior sites if quiet matters. Summer humidity is significant, and biting insects are active in wooded and wetland areas near Thorn Creek, so bring screens and repellent.
Check-in windows and quiet hours vary by park. Confirm rig length limits before arrival, particularly for older properties with tighter interior roads, and ask about tree canopy if you rely on rooftop solar or a tall satellite setup.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Glenwood, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Glenwood, IL?
RV rental in Glenwood, IL is one of the more affordable ways to escape the south suburbs and explore the Midwest. Travel trailers typically run about $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and luxury Class A motorhomes can go from $250 to $400+ per night. Because Glenwood sits 23 miles south of the Chicago Loop, you'll often find better pricing here than at downtown pickup points. For a cheap RV rental Glenwood travelers love, book midweek, aim for shoulder months like April or October, and filter for travel trailers if a host can deliver. Pro tip: many hosts bundle camping chairs, generators, and kitchen kits for free during slower weeks.
visitchicagosouthland.com/603/village-of-glenwoodWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Glenwood, Illinois?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Glenwood, a regular driver's license is all you need. You must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy confirms your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no paperwork at pickup. Illinois ties license class to vehicle weight, but nearly every rental on the platform (campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most travel trailers) falls under the standard Class D limit of 16,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly the pickup walkthrough gets them road-ready.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlIs my Glenwood RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Glenwood, IL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-80 or I-94 with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier at checkout (not the host), picking the level that matches your comfort. While this isn't traditional auto insurance, it gives renters real financial peace of mind for accidents, certain interior damage, and breakdowns. Pro tip: snap a quick walkaround video of the RV at pickup and dropoff. It takes two minutes and makes any post-trip questions effortless to resolve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Glenwood RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Glenwood is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, with a grace period right after you book during which you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that grace period, refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start. The full policy is shown during checkout and inside your RVezy dashboard, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Class C motorhomes for popular weekends like Memorial Day or the Indiana Dunes summer rush, knowing you have a clear cancellation policy backing your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Glenwood?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Glenwood options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see hosts who genuinely welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Glenwood is a great launch point for furry co-pilots: Sand Ridge Nature Center in nearby South Holland has leashed-dog trails, and the Thorn Creek Forest Preserve trails just minutes from the village are pup paradise. Many area campgrounds, including KOA Chicago South in Union, allow leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees, breed/size limits, and bring a small towel for muddy paws after Cook County Forest Preserve hikes.
fpdcc.com/Can the RV be delivered to me in Glenwood?
Yes, RV delivery Glenwood is one of the most popular ways to book, especially for first-timers nervous about navigating I-80 or I-94 in a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the south suburbs will drive the RV straight to your driveway, a Cook County Forest Preserve campsite, or a nearby park like KOA Chicago South, set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just filter by Delivery when you search. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile round-trip. Pro tip: ask the host to deliver to your campsite at Des Plaines River Trail or Channahon State Park for a true zero-stress start.
fpdcc.com/preserves-and-trails/campgrounds/How far can I drive on a Glenwood RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You've got serious range from Glenwood, and many RVezy hosts now offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or generous daily allotments (typically 100 to 150 miles per day). From Glenwood, you can reach Indiana Dunes National Park in about 45 minutes, Starved Rock State Park in 90 minutes, Wisconsin Dells in 3 hours, and Lake Michigan's eastern shore (Warren Dunes) in 90 minutes. Extra miles usually cost $0.30 to $0.50 each if you exceed your cap. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Glenwood loop through Door County or the Upper Peninsula, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first. It pays off fast on long hauls.

Top picks include: Camp Sullivan in Oak Forest (15 minutes away, Cook County Forest Preserve hookups), KOA Chicago South in Union (about 70 minutes, full-hookup family resort with pool), Indiana Dunes State Park Campground (45 minutes east, lakefront sites), Channahon State Park (60 minutes, free first-come sites along the I&M Canal), and Starved Rock State Park (90 minutes southwest, hike-to-camp paradise). Pro tip: Cook County Forest Preserve sites at Camp Sullivan are often overlooked and offer electric hookups just minutes from Glenwood. Book early on ExploreMoreIL.com for state parks.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Glenwood, Illinois?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for an RV rental Illinois adventure out of Glenwood, with the absolute sweet spots being May, June, and September. Summer highs sit around 82°F to 86°F (with humid July afternoons hitting the 90s), while spring and fall hover at a comfortable 60°F to 75°F. Winters get cold (averages 20°F to 35°F in January) and some hosts winterize their rigs from late November through March, though winter-ready RVs with heated tanks are available year-round. Pro tip: book in mid-September for warm days, cool nights, fall colors at Starved Rock, and noticeably lower nightly rates than July peak.
weather.gov/lot/I'm a first-time renter. How does the pickup and orientation work?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host in Glenwood gives a thorough walkthrough at pickup, usually 30 to 60 minutes, covering driving tips, the propane system, slide-outs, holding tanks, generator, awning, and how to dump and refill water. You're not handed keys and waved off, you leave knowing exactly how everything works. Many hosts also send video tutorials before your trip. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, book delivery and setup so the RV is waiting and ready. Pro tip: take notes on your phone during the orientation, especially around the dump valve sequence. Future-you at the dump station will thank you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown on my Glenwood RV trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Glenwood booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something feels off mechanically, you can also message the host directly through the app, since they know their RV best. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone contacts before you leave Glenwood, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate so any call is quick and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Glenwood RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Glenwood is one of the best parts of renting here. You're right at the Indiana border (about 15 minutes east), and most RVezy hosts welcome trips through Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and beyond. Popular runs include Indiana Dunes, Wisconsin Dells, and the Lake Michigan circle tour. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host's insurance coverage, so message them before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a 2-week loop from Glenwood through Michigan's UP and around Lake Superior is a bucket-list RV road trip from Glenwood you'll never forget.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG for a motorhome rental Glenwood?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think for a motorhome rental Glenwood travelers love. Class B campervans get about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A diesels typically run 7 to 10 MPG. Illinois gas prices generally sit slightly above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so filling up just over the border in Indiana (a 15-minute drive east) often saves real money. For a typical 300-mile weekend in a Class C, expect $90 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: use GasBuddy and fill up in Hammond or Munster, Indiana before heading out on longer trips.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Glenwood?
For summer weekends, book Illinois state park campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead, especially Starved Rock, Channahon, and Illinois Beach State Park. Illinois uses the ExploreMoreIL.com reservation system (running on ReserveAmerica), with a 180-day booking window and a 3-day minimum advance notice. Indiana Dunes State Park, just across the border, books through camp.IN.gov up to 6 months out. Private parks like KOA Chicago South often fill up by April for Fourth of July weekend. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are way easier to score, and Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds (like Camp Sullivan in Oak Forest) tend to have more last-minute availability than state parks.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Glenwood for a big RV?
Glenwood is actually one of the easier south Chicago suburbs to launch an RV from, since you skip downtown traffic entirely. I-80, I-94, and I-294 are all within minutes, giving you flat, well-maintained interstates in every direction. Avoid driving an RV into downtown Chicago (Lake Shore Drive has height/weight restrictions and Lower Wacker is a nightmare), and watch for the Skyway tolls heading east. Winter brings snow and ice from December through February, so check IDOT's GettingAroundIllinois.com road conditions before heading out. Pro tip: leave Glenwood before 6:30 a.m. or after 9:30 a.m. on weekdays to dodge the I-80/I-294 commuter crunch toward Indiana.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Glenwood?
Campgrounds within an hour of Glenwood typically offer 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets, with most private parks adding Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Cook County Forest Preserve sites like Camp Sullivan offer electric and water but no sewer at the site (use the central dump). State parks like Channahon are more rustic with vault toilets but free or very cheap. The closest dump stations include Camp Sullivan and Indiana Dunes State Park. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving Glenwood, since some forest preserve sites have limited spigots. Most local campgrounds welcome RVs up to 40 feet without issue.
fpdcc.com/preserves-and-trails/campgrounds/camp-sullivan/What's inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
Most RVs available for campervan rental Glenwood or larger motorhome bookings come fully equipped: queen or king beds, sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on floor plan, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B+ and up), air conditioning, propane heat, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many have a TV, and some hosts offer onboard Wi-Fi or hotspots as an add-on. Generators come standard on most Class A and Class C motorhomes for boondocking off-grid. Pro tip: when comparing listings, sort by sleeps count and check whether linens, towels, and kitchenware are included or rentable. It's a huge convenience win.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glenwood%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my Glenwood RV rental?
Glenwood hosts get creative with add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include camp kitchen kits ($25 to $75), bedding packages ($25 to $50 per bed), generators ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, kayaks, propane fire pits, and outdoor furniture. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Glenwood or nearby south suburbs like Lansing or Homewood, and many offer delivery for $2 to $5 per mile. Mileage policies vary, so check before booking. Pro tip: if you're heading to Starved Rock or Indiana Dunes, ask about adding a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Cell service can dip in the Illinois River canyons but a hotspot keeps the family content.
visitchicagosouthland.com/603/village-of-glenwoodHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your rent an RV in Glenwood booking happens securely through RVezy, never directly to the host, so you're fully protected. You'll pay for your booking through RVezy at the time of booking (with installment options available for trips booked far in advance), and a refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup. Deposit amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value. As long as the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and on time, your deposit is released back, usually within a few days of dropoff. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with the host. It's the easiest way to ensure a smooth, fast deposit return.
