Overview of camping near Grafton, Illinois
Grafton sits at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers in Jersey County, about 45 minutes northwest of St. Louis. The town anchors the southern end of the Great River Road and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the limestone bluffs, river towns, and state parks of west-central Illinois.
Campground options in the immediate area lean toward state park camping and mid-size private RV parks. Pere Marquette State Park, just west of town, offers the closest public campground with electric sites suitable for most rigs. Across the Mississippi in Missouri and elsewhere in the Metro East, private parks such as Sundermeier RV Park, St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, Lakeview RV Estates, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park provide full-hookup alternatives within an hour's drive.
Most travelers use Grafton as a river-focused stop: paved bike trails, wineries, boat tours, and eagle-watching in winter drive visitation. Traffic peaks on fall weekends when bluff foliage draws heavy day-tripper crowds.
Things to do around Grafton
Pere Marquette State Park covers roughly 8,050 acres of forested bluff country with about 12 miles of marked trails, a scenic overlook drive, guided trail rides, and a historic CCC-era lodge with a stone fireplace rising to the roofline. The park also hosts winter bald eagle programs when the birds concentrate along open river channels.
The Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail runs along the Great River Road between Alton and Pere Marquette, offering flat, paved riding with river views. Grafton's downtown includes a marina, riverfront restaurants, an aerial SkyTour chairlift up the bluffs, and Grafton Winery. Boat cruises run seasonally from the waterfront.
Day trips reach the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site at Hartford, the Cahokia Mounds UNESCO site near Collinsville, and downtown St. Louis attractions including the Gateway Arch.

The main camping season at Pere Marquette State Park and nearby private parks runs from spring through late fall. The Illinois DNR campground at Pere Marquette is typically active from spring through October, with reduced services in shoulder months. Private parks such as Sundermeier RV Park and Granite City KOA generally operate year-round with full hookups available in winter.
Spring brings heavy rainfall and elevated Mississippi and Illinois River levels. Riverfront areas of Grafton have historically flooded during major spring events, which can close waterfront parking, marinas, and river-adjacent roads. Check Illinois DNR advisories before arrival during March through June.
Summer is peak season for boating, cycling, and lodge dining, with weekends filling well in advance. Fall weekends draw large foliage crowds through October. Winter is quiet but delivers the region's signature attraction: concentrations of wintering bald eagles along the open river below the Alton lock and dam.
How to book campgrounds near Grafton
Pere Marquette State Park campsites are reserved through Illinois DNR's ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations open on a rolling six-month (180-day) window, and electric sites for summer weekends and fall foliage weekends typically book out quickly after becoming available. Reservations must be made at least three days before arrival, and arriving Thursday is advisable for weekend stays.
Private parks use their own booking channels. Sundermeier RV Park, St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, Lakeview RV Estates, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park accept reservations directly through their websites or by phone, with KOA properties also bookable via the KOA app.
For Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day weekends, reserve at least two to three months out.
What to expect at campgrounds near Grafton
Pere Marquette State Park's Class A campground has 80 sites with electric-only hookups (20, 30, and 50 amp), a sanitary dump station, drinking water, and a shower building on the grounds. A Class B tent area sits nearby with access to the same shower building. Sites are wooded and rolling; longer rigs should confirm site length at booking. Cell coverage is variable in the bluffs.
The private parks in the St. Louis metro area, including Sundermeier, Granite City KOA, and Casino Queen, provide full hookups, level pull-through sites, laundry, Wi-Fi, and easy interstate access. They function well as travel-day stops or bases for exploring St. Louis without moving the rig.
Expect mosquitoes and ticks in wooded sites from May through September, and pack rain gear for spring stays.
