Back at private campgrounds like Springfield KOA Journey and Double J Campground and RV Park, expect pools, playgrounds, and family-friendly events that suit kids and first-time RV renters.

Central Illinois has four distinct seasons. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and the region's wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms from April into June. Tornado watches are common in this window, so RV renters should check radar before overnight stops. Summer is warm and humid, with July and August the peak booking window around Springfield thanks to the Illinois State Fair and family vacations. Reservations for Sangchris Lake and Springfield KOA Journey fill weeks out for weekends. Fall delivers the most comfortable weather: cool nights, dry days, and color in the hardwoods through October. Winter is the off-season for most sites in the area. Hickory Point at Sangchris Lake State Park stays open year-round, but water and shower facilities close from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31. The park's Deer Run campground closes the second week of January through March 31. Reservations for state park sites are accepted online through ExploreMoreIL for the April 1 through October 31 window. Private parks such as Kamper Kompanion RV Park and Camp A While may stay open longer, but hours and hookups can be limited in cold weather.
