Water dominates the local trip plan. Chain O'Lakes State Park borders three natural lakes (Grass, Marie, and Nippersink) and connects via the Fox River to seven more, plus a 44-acre lake inside park boundaries called Turner Lake, giving the chain nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline. Anglers target bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass. On land, the state park features seven picnic areas and four trail systems, including the Nature's Way hiking trail that starts at Oak Grove Picnic Area and runs 2 1/4 miles. Seasonal boat rentals are handled by the concessionaire, Gill's on the Chain, with motorboats, rowboats, canoes, and kayaks available. Families staying at private resorts get pool time, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities without leaving the campground.

The camping season in this part of Illinois is tightly compressed. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs from May 1 through October 15, and other private parks follow a similar spring-to-fall window. Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day are peak, and sites at the state park fill quickly, so booking weeks ahead is standard practice. Shoulder season has real advantages. Spring brings cooler nights and fewer crowds, while September and early October deliver warm days, fall color along the Fox River, and easier reservations. The state park's concession stand is open April through mid-October and stocks food, ice, firewood, and fishing supplies. Late fall shifts the park's purpose entirely. Summer hours end the last weekend in October when hunting begins and the entire park is closed for general use; hunting is by registration only. Once ice thickens, ice skating, snowshoeing, sledding, and ice fishing take over, with ice fishing available on the Chain and Turner Lake and a sledding hill at the park office.

Expect a mix of hookup levels. At Chain O'Lakes, the Class A-Premium areas (Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den) total 151 sites with electric service, three Class B-Premium areas (Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East) add 87 more primitive sites, and one youth group area at Mud Lake West accommodates up to 150 youths. Private resorts tilt toward full-service. Fish Lake Beach offers full hookups with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus pull-through sites for larger rigs, a heated pool, hot tub, playground, laundry, and a dump station. A couple of local rules worth knowing: all state park campers must bring their own firewood, and no one is allowed to pick up wood in the park. Alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
