Campgrounds and RV parks near Harristown, IL

Fishing and boating dominate the local calendar. Clinton Lake covers roughly 4,900 acres and is popular for crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, and walleye, with accessible boat launches at Mascoutin and West Side, a fishing pier at the Spillway Access, and a 1,000-foot sand beach open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Weldon Springs has a smaller lake with fishing access and a boat ramp, tournament-quality horseshoe pits, and the restored Union School interpretive center. Hikers have several options. Weldon Springs offers four trails ranging from about a mile to just over three miles, including the 2-mile Lakeside Self-Guiding Interpretive Trail and the 3.1-mile Old Farm Trail. Sangchris Lake State Park has more than 20 miles of trails shared with equestrians and a public archery range. Families typically pair a day at the lake with side trips to Springfield's Lincoln historic sites, about 30 to 40 minutes from Harristown.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Camping demand runs highest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the sand beach at Clinton Lake is open and campgrounds fill quickly on holiday weekends. Spring brings the region's heaviest rainfall, and low-lying campsites, including the primitive backpack sites along Salt Creek at Weldon Springs, can flood; calling the park before arriving is recommended. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler nights and turning leaves through the oak and maple stands. Hunting seasons affect access at Clinton Lake, where the campground closes for the full week before the first firearm deer season and the Mascoutin area is off-limits to non-hunters during that hunt. Winter camping is possible but limited. Weldon Springs stays open year-round, though its shower building typically closes November 1 and reopens May 1. At Sangchris Lake, the Deer Run campground closes the second week of January through March 31, and water facilities and the shower building shut from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31.

State park campgrounds in the Harristown area are geared to RVs and trailers, with a mix of Class A electric sites (30 and 50 amp), a smaller number of full-hookup Class AA sites, and primitive walk-in areas. Clinton Lake has 17 Class AA sites with electric, water, and sewer, 277 Class A electric sites, and 14 Class B/S sites, plus shower houses, potable water from mid-April to November, and a sanitary dump station. Weldon Springs offers 75 Class A electric sites, additional non-powered and primitive sites, a shower building, and a sanitary dump station. Hickory Point at Sangchris Lake is compact and shoreline-focused, with 55 Class A sites, 10 Class C sites, two rent-a-cabin sites, flush toilets, and the park's shower building. Expect mosquitoes in summer and occasional raccoons in tent areas; standard food storage and bug precautions apply.
